ME2 was a giant disappointment for me. The only way in which it's really better than ME3 is that it doesn't end atrociously like ME3 does. The ending of ME2 is great; the last moments of ME3 have one of the biggest dips in quality of writing I've ever seen in a video game. It's filled with plot holes, it doesn't give enough closure, it completely disregards all the choices you ever made throughout the series, and, to rub salt in the wound, it all ends with a little prompt telling you to buy DLC. What the hell?

Other than that, ME3 is better. The controls are less stiff, the combat is more fun, the pacing of the story is much better, the squadmates feel less like dumb robots you drag around with you on every mission, etc. I don't really mind the auto-dialogue since a lot of the conversations in ME2 were pretty pointless.

ME 2 was total mess. Horrid story, no RPG elements, weakest characters of all time, miserable level designs, no emotion or tension, and the most insipid action of all time.

I much prefered ME1 story-wise and ME3 for combat, pacing and emotional impact.  ME2 was still fun, but it felt like "filler for the real thing" more then anything.

There is no such thing as ME3. The series started with ME and ended with ME2.

ME2 for sure - game 1 was tedious.... standing around in elevators....
I've played every class, gender, difficulty level, love interest and loyalty/non-loyalty possibility -  around 1100 hours of pure entertainment in ME2.
ME3 to me, goes back to a really slow-paced, partial game, full of movie scenes I can't take a loo break in in case I miss some piece of information - and that's quite apart from the endings issue. The citadel is crap, the journal is worse and there is no sensation of any ability to make a difference.
ME2 gave you choices ,you had the option of being as good or bad as you wanted - some of which was very amusing. (EG being called 'bacteria' by Harbinger not only made me laugh but more than ever determined to blow him out of the Universe) - go renegade!
I don't mind the 'end of the galaxy' scenario being somewhat darker for ME3, but hey - don't ya think your love interest would display a little more interest in you IF the galaxy was ending instead of  just 'hello shepherd' for 90% of the time?
I realise it's a game, that being said, a lot of us have invested both time and money in support of the series, so a dim, depressing story with only a few good battles just doesn't cut it.
ME2 was a lot of  fun, and at nearly $200 for the Collector's Edition of ME3 in this country....need I say that a game with no glimmer or spark of hope leaves me dissatisfied, and let's not include the issue of forced multiplayer.....

Can I also please kill the 3 characters I hate the most in ME3 - godchild, grampa and dumb kid - someone give me a particle rifle or a level 10 graal spike thrower!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)

i thought it was better

bioware does characters really well when they direct their focus toward them and i enjoyed that it was the characters (what bioware are best at) that drove the story

I like the first one even more. It felt more open for discoverers. But I totally agree.

The dialogue was reduced to a minimum and I felt a bit let down on the variety of missions. Especially the side quests were nothing special anymore. Another thing I really missed is the loyalty missions. I loved this series for character interaction and story. Unfortunately it was dumbed down. If I want to play an FPS I go and buy one but this games potential is so much more. Perhaps all in all the result of a rush job. Sadly.

I'm not sure. ME3 is a heck of a game up until the last 10 minutes and I can't tell how much those few moments sour my view of the rest. There are parts of ME2 that are quite... not-perfect imho (Samara's loyalty mission comes to mind - the dialogue with Morinth at the table feels so forced), though they happen at less important times than ME3's weak ending.

I'm fairly certain that if only ME3's ending wasn't the way it was, they'd be very, very comparable. And ME2 is easily in my top10 games of all time.

I got three words for you "Hello, Dead People".

Oh four more "I WILL DESTROY YOU!"

I'm Xerorei and Jack is my favorite character on the Citadel, or prison, or anywhere else you need to hurl a hugely powerful vanguard with a shotgun.

ME1 was better than both but ME3 was still better than 2.

I really didn't think ME2 was good at all.

ME2 was the "Lion King 1 and 1/2" of the series, and yet I still preferred it. A lot. ME1 was a little more focused on 'classic' scifi elements, like trying to focus on setting and history and technology to set the tone for the period. It was the beginning of the main plot, but worried too much about the politics and advancements, etc, while I personally felt ME2 was just slightly more worried about characters, connecting players a little better. And I think it was a good continuation of ME1, but then all of it was so ignored in ME3 and seemed to have such little impact that it came off as a filler. If they'd made the Collector Base and everything a bigger part in ME3, then ME2 would seem like more than just a way to highlight Cerberus's evilness. So it was more of ME3's fault that ME2 wasn't integrated into the series as a hole as well as it could have been.
But still, my favorite.

ME2 was the better game. ME3 does improve in certain areas. Like having Shep not walk fully armed and in armour in every hub, having the crew move about the ship, the side conversations, seeing them in the citidel, those were all very cool things.

But as a whole ME2 is still the best game I have ever played, and ME3 falls a bit short.

In my opinion, ME2 is not only the best game of the series but also the best game ever. It's the best game I've ever played, at least. It's not perfect but it's about as close a game of that ambition can come.

2 was my favorite by far, 1 is a decent second. The third isn't bad, but the auto-dialog already mentioned, the very poor showing on the end, and the neutering of side quests and squad interactions all drastically damage the story/rpg elements for me compared to the prior 2 entries.

I liked that the squad moved around a bit and interacted with one another, but not at the cost of interacting with me. And there were several key parts (such as the Tali face photoshop) that just feel really lazy to me in this game.

And I won't go into the ending in this thread since it's everywhere if you want ot see the issues with it.

Mass Effect 2 was definitely my favorite in the trilogy. There was a lot of rich character development there. Mass Effect 3, regardless of the ending, was still an amazing game, just not the best in my own opinion.

ME2 was at least playable on PS3, unlike ME3. I just can't believe how Bioware managed to go backwards in performance from ME2 to ME3 on the PS3, I mean, it is supposedly the same engine on both!

ME2 is a superior game to ME3.

ME1 pwns them both.

Also on PC, there are performance problems. Glitches galore, and incredibly slow framerate throughout the game.

It's a little harsh comparing me3 to me2, considering that me2 is probably one of the finest games ever produced - especially in the last 5 years. Me3, beside the ending, really cashes in on what was built up during me2 in many ways. It's still good. Me2 was just very, very special.
