Long haul? I'll return to play DA:Owhen I need to if I've got nothing new to play. Otherwise, for now, I'm addicted to it.

I've been waiting for a game with a well documented editor that I can finally start tinkering with. I used to be pretty good at making levels in UnrealED, but it was horribly buggy, poorly supported and I didn't know jack diddly crap about C++, or any kind of programming, at the time. Tried again when NWN came out, but still hadn't learned enough to really get started (and I couldn't really get into the game itself, anyway, so making content for it just seemed pointless).

Now DA:O is here, with this awesome toolset, I think I'm going to be tinkering with it for a long time to come. Can't wait to labour many hours over some crazily detailed landscape areas. Got a feeling my levels aren't going to be very friendly to people without top-end PCs

Too soon to say, really. Ask me when I've completed two playthroughs.

If they come out with some dlc and/or expansion packs I find interesting then I'll play them, but I'm not about to snatch up anything just because it is DA:O. I've finished the game once, and probably won't play through again right away. Maybe play around with the tool kit, but once ME2 comes out I doubt I'll be playing this one. That being said if they come out with some good expansions packs with a good story, improvements in game play, and etc I'd check it out.

After NWN and especially NWN2(didnt bother with expansions)... I think any expansion or sequel to this game will be a disappointment, Cue exit.

But that doesnt stop me hoping it wont come to that.

Many may disagree but I thought nwn1 shadows of undertide was big disappointment, id rather games like films  continue on after the first game with the same char not depart into some new adventure thats what new games are for, not sequels/expansions imo. BG series method is what i favor even if npc party you started with wasnt your choosen set^

Neverwinter - hero saves neverwinter, aribeth is in jail

SOU - what? a student in school
HOTU - same student, least it follows on from  "SOU" ..but now suddenly aribeth is dead/ghost, what? aribeth who?
NWN2 - what, what village? needless to say it didnt get any better from here.

Dont get me wrong, I enjoyed NWN "multiplayer" for years. Dragon age does not have this safely net.

Which means the story is most important aspect in origins, departing from this story could break the sequel. game.

I am being drawn toward BioWare's revolutionary new RP oriented mmo. I think SWTOR may steal me away.

I may be able to purchase a $5 to $15 mini content update once a month but would I get as much gametime from that vs a swtor subscription? I honestly do not think so at this point.

I do believe i will be involved in the game for the long haul. With DLC and expansions (and i could care less they charge for them)

I will still play KOTOR on occasion, and this game hold my attention also.

With Mass Effect 2, The Old Republic and other titles coming out.. i may leave for a bit, but i know i will still be playing a long time

I'd really like to, but this game is more addictive to me than World of Warcraft was.. So I dunno.. Spending 17 hours straight infront of a computer instead of doing the things I should be doing is very very tempting, but oh so stupid of me.

Not sure. I put 75 hours into my first playthrough and had a whole list of characters reserved for new playthroughs, but I haven't found the will to continue playing them. The DLC plans don't excite me either, quite the opposite. I think I'm done with Dragon Age until the sequel or a new exciting expansion is announced.

I'll continue to be here, and playing the game for as long as i can. I love the gameplay, love the story, and LOVE Alistair.

Romancing him alone would keep me here xD

Given how much modding has been done in the games first month of release, yes, I think I will stick about.

Who knows, DAO might have it's own 'Darkest Day' and 'Unfinished Business' mods.

I have some module ideas, but one thing I need to do is get into 3D texturing and modeling. I also am trying to figure out how to open the main campaign in the editor so I can fix glitches like levitating trees, quests not taking quest items, and so on.

Aside from that, I'm enjoying a second play-through with a pretty human mage, sultry soundset, and deadly killer. She's killed just about everyone the game allows so far, and she does it with that cute voice. Heh. Leliana would be jealous.

Seeing as I still play ME, KotOR, and NWN, I'm probably in for the long haul. Good thing about Bioware games, when a new one comes out you play it till you can't take it anymore, then you go back to another game they have and play it for a while before coming back to the other game until a new one comes out and suddenly you have a new shiny and start getting excited and writing sentences with little punctuation!

All the games you mentioned in the original post had multiplayer, which brought the players together into a social and roleplaying community. DA:O does not.

Depends alot on if the company actually am going to do something about the game both in short medium and long term and not stall it the sony online entertainment way.

Meh, I'll be around from time to time. To be honest, however, I'm more devoted to Mass Effect.

Thing is, this game doesnt really NEED multiplayer. The modding by the community is enough. If i wanted to interact with live people ingame, i'd go play an MMO (which i do btw). Having a single player game is a really nice break from the MMO world.

I honestly dont know why so many people insist on adding such an element in.

I've been in the "long haul" with BioWare since the days of Baldur's Gate. I won't commit to a single game but rather a single gaming company.

I'm sure patches, DLCs and mods will keep me coming back for more.

I was actually playing NWN earlier this year so chances are I'll be around for DA:O for a while yet. Plus, I'm still on my first playthrough!

No multiplayer does not limit its longevity at least in my eyes. It will depend on the mods and future expansions. I am still playing BG with different mods that came up over the years. NWN same thing.

It just got released a month ago, really its just the beginning with all the possible community content, DLC and future sequels. I'll be here for a while.

I'll pick up expansions because the game is pretty good, but the lack of MP play limits my interest in terms of doing any sort of building.

The thing is, the game is so story focused. You can't even have a character outside of a saved game. It's not like I can take my main character from the OC and play through new DLC or community made modules.

In addition there are only 3 races and 3 classes. This limits playthroughs of the OC.(some have argued that there are different trees for each class that increases the technical number of "classes" but they're all pretty much the same. one line an all activated, another mostly passive/sustained and one mixed (always 3 per tree except for class specific). You're still basically doing the same thing whether sword and board or two-handed.)

With the OC story so tied to official content it's not even like someone could make a race/class pack that could be used with it.

No, it's a good game and I'll definiately play through expansions but I doubt I'm here for the long haul.

I, disappointingly, probably won't be around for the long haul unless a few things happen.

The current crop of classes, abilities and races is very limited. I understand it was probably more for beginning balance and DLC options; however, it makes the current game feel very shallow. The skill trees are FAR too simple and do not allow enough character defining abilities to make it worth making a whole lot of characters (or to stay interested in one character for very long). So, my future play will depend somewhat on this and whether the new DLC content or community content can adequately address such issues.

The next thing is the item database. DA:O probably has the most shallow item database I have ever seen in a game of this genre. It is the most simplistic and basic set ever and is completely unrewarding over the long haul. One should not end up using the same items they acquired at level 7 until level 25, period. The character seems to lack evolution and things like merchants, shops, treasure chests, etc., all become completely meaningless in the current game. Even the creative toolset item side is extremely limited in it's scope... Far more so than any other similar title before this it seems. Extremely disappointing. The community will address this quite a bit I'm sure, as well as Bioware in future DLC to a degree, but to not have it more substantial out of the gate was very disappointing and makes it hard to 'stick around' just to wait for the content to finally come.

Next, there is the graphics. I know DA:O is 'story driven' and all that but it is no excuse for the very poor textures and the like in the game. I was really looking forward to a 'next gen' RPG experience and what I got was 'next gen without the graphics'. I really wanted the boofoo graphics to take it up a huge notch. I desperately wanted to have an RPG experience with 'offline' graphics (knowing it did not have an online component) that were not hindered by the things that nerf the graphics on many MMOs, etc. To say it has been extremely disappointing in the graphics department is probably a tremendous understatement. I, frankly, expected a much better level of quality in the item design/graphics and texture models (not even going to touch on physics and bad lighting stuff). It makes the game less interesting when compared to games with more modern visuals thus making it harder to stay interested for the 'long haul'.

The largest determent for me, and many others in this thread it seems, is the complete lack of some type of multiplayer support to allow persistent worlds, ala NWN, where the real community was built. NWN's community wasn't built through social networking sites like this one right away... It was built in persistent worlds hosted on private servers where people met, infused ideas, etc., then took to these sites to talk about those things socially and grow the community. I feel the lack of the ability to share creations and host persistent worlds where you can DM your mod even (the whole DM part missing is like an entire world of content missing) was a tremendous oversight by Bioware. I would say this is the single largest thing that will probably prevent me from keeping interest for the 'long haul' (it held me in NWN for two years!). The mini-MMO feel was awesome and it's not present here.

Don't get me wrong. I'm totally satisfied with my purchase of DA:O and it has been a great gameplay experience from the story point of view; however, these things do prevent me from staying interested after a couple playthroughs. It's just the way it is. A great game that I milked for over 100+ hours of game time. No small feat in this day and age of 4.5 hour single player campaigns (Modern Warfare 2, I'm looking at you... Greatest disappointment in all of video game history, right there). For that, DA:O is a champion.

I'm hoping future DLC will be strong enough to keep bringing me back and holding my interest; however, the time between DLC releases may be too much to bear when there are so many other great titles in the uber competitive game market right now.
