I really, really like Dragon Age. I loved Origins -- I literally probably played through it at least four times. DAII? Eh, not so much. One play through was enough for me. My main issues with DAII are:

1. Recycled environments/dungeons -- like, seriously? All caves followed the same layout and design, but just had blocked off hallways and rooms. The same with dungeons. This just screams developer laziness and really thwarts any player immersion with the game. I know there's probably more to it, I know there is no way the developing team did this on purpose and expected fans to be okay with it -- but do what you have to do to give us new environments. I'm sure many dedicated and loyal fans would be more than happy for a delayed product if they received a completed, polished one.

2. Customization -- there needs to be more of it. I'm not talking about skill/ability wise -- skill trees are all the rage now -- I'm talking about equipment, and especially companion equipment. I realize that the developers have their own artistic vision and direction of characters, but the players do too, and we would love to be able to customize our characters equipment to better suit our own play styles and needs. For example, say you love Aveline as a character and enjoy using her, but you also want your Hawke to be a tank. You can't turn Aveline into a DPS warrior -- she's set in stone as a tank. This class conflict restricts the player from immersing a Hawke Tank play style with high Aveline use (especially on higher difficulties, you can't really use two party slots as low DPS tanks).

In short, let us customize our characters. Let us decide whether or not we want our warrior companions to be DPS or tanks, our mages if we want them to be healers or damage dealers,

3. Plot points that matter -- I felt like nearly all of Act I and II were absolutely and completely pointless. They didn't really add much to the story. Hell, I felt like Hawke's overall story was pointless. The entire game felt like a series of side quests with no master narrative at all. It's only until Act III that you get to the beefy plot of Templars vs Mages -- everything before that is just... redundant. Make our actions count towards something.

4. Kirkwall -- please, please, PLEASE don't make the setting for DAIII ONE CITY. Because when you do, considering BioWare's track record, the city is extremely limited, and it gets old walking up and down the same stairs and alleyways act after act. Give us new and exciting environments to explore. Take us to Orlais or the Anderfels. Take us somewhere. Hell, show us more of the Free Marches... but show us, not just one City-State (which is extremely limited).

5. Bring back Origins combat -- please stop trying to appeal to new audiences by dumbing down your game and catering to console players. DA:O, at its heart, is a PC RPG. Go back to your roots. Return to the isometric view (with the option for over-the-shoulder). Bring back the constant pausing to form a strategy. Bring back the difficulty. We don't want another hack'n'slash. Get off of EA's dick and return to your BioWare roots, please.

6. Enemies -- no more bull**** with enemies falling out of the sky and attacking the party. No more "wave after wave" combat. Set up ambushes, set up larger initial enemy groups, or whatever you have to do. Just get rid of the ridiculousness of enemies dropping from the sky.

Yay! I seriously can't wait! I've been devouring DA books and fan fiction (and writing it) like wild and am trying to compensate by playing ME! *fan girl flails*

I'll probably be echoing what a lot have posted before. Let me say that I really love the DA series and I'm looking forward to what DA3 will bring. I've played DAO and all DLC and DA2 without DLC. There are quite a few changes in DA2 that I welcomed, for example the UI and combat. What I was disappointed with was the fact that the game for the most part, was in Kirkwall. The sense of scale was gone, and the repeat environments killed me.

Basically the scale and customization of DAO MUST be kept for the next installment. From the character armor to the narrative. From DA2 the combat imo was brilliant! Though the customization from DAO would be welcomed!

DA2s characters and interactions were also really well done. The fact that they interacted with each other in and out of combat was really well done, and showed relationships blossoming with the characters. e.g. When visiting certain characters seeing others leave, added a lot character wise for me.

I guess overall more player freedom is the order. The voiced protagonist was also a welcomed addition. Also on an unrelated note...is there any way to register the digital PSN edition of DA2? I've been trying to do so for a while...

Thanks for listening and involving the fans! It shows a lot!

This sucks so hard. I had heard whispers of an "Exalted March" DLC that was on the way too, and had high hopes of a good reveal at PAX.

I really loved DA2. It wasn't perfect (what is?) but the writing and characters were beautiful, and the two expansions we did get were top notch - better and more relevant than any of the expansion content for DAO, I think.

We will try to bring some closure to Hawke's story but likely not in a playable form. Originally we had planned to do an expansion pack but had to stop to focus on what we are working on now.

You can't just... not finish a story. The Warden had their closure, and we had the possibility to revisit them with all the DLC. But Hawke? The ending was kind of a cliffhanger, left me under the impression that he was still needed for what was to come, and you're saying there's a good chance it might stay that way? Maybe that's why a lot of people didn't like DA2, it just feels like a lot was pretty much rushed/butchered and you are walking the same path again. I loved the game, grew fond of the characters, and it seriously upsets me that it's just going to be left at that. What was the point?

The Expansion Pack was never intended to be part of the original DA2 story. It wasn't cut or "reserved". It was conceived of AFTER DA2 had been out for a while.
The expansion pack might have provided better closure on certain personal aspects of Hawke's story, but Hawke's actions in DA2 have changed the world. This will have an impact.

Sorry Mark, I am entirely done with Dragon Age after DA2 threw the successful formula established in DAO out the window and I do not plan on buying DA3 either.

You're so entirely done with Dragon Age that you're talking about Dragon Age on a Dragon Age forum.

I bought DAO and DA2 I think I have a right to my opinion on the forum don't you?

Being finished with a series doesn't mean I'll censor my opinion.

I think the objection to your post has more to do with how and where you said, than with your opinion. I know that 'haters gonna hate' but I do wish you (they) would find a way to do it constructively, rather than with blanket, unhelpful, statements.

But of course, YMMV (and does, I guess),

Nice to hear DAIII is in development.

Sad to hear that we aren't getting at least one more DLC for DAII. Would have been nice to get an addon that would connect DAII to DAIII like Awakening and Witch Hunt do for Origins.

I was a huge fan of Dragon Age: Origins - but Dragon Age 2 was the first time I was disappointed with a Bioware release. I honestly couldn't even muster up the enthusiasm to finish the game.

Instead of being able to choose more than a half-dozen origins and races, you're stuck with Hawke. Instead of an entire world map, you're stuck with a single city.
Instead of an epic threat like the Darkspawn Horde, you have 3 minor threats.
Instead of tactical strategy, you have button mashing and enemies that spawn behind you a dozen times to try to challenge you by pure attrition.

I'm hoping Dragon Age 3 holds up as well as the epic adventure that was Dragon Age: Origins did, but I'm afraid that the series is following the same pattern as the Fable series - with a great, deep first game that has increasingly disappointing sequels that slowly but surely rip out the best features of the first game.

Honestly Im really sad to hear DA2 is done. In my opinion it was not that bad of a game, could it have been more in depth? yes, the companion relationships were really lacking and a better conclusion/expansion would have been great, but oh well. Though the thought of a brand new adventure warms the heart too. Ill stand by you till the end bioware!

I was disappointed in DA2. It wasn't a bad game. I just think it took a few steps back compared to origins. Origins was epic on all levels. The combat was better though in DA2 except potions having a cool down. That was a pain. I really liked the DLC though. Thats what gave me back hope in Dragon Age. I'm looking forward to seeing what DA3 has in store. More Sten & Morrigan please. :)

Dragon age origins is in my opinion the best game ever made.

Dragon age 2 was terrible by comparision but still a great game by todays standards.

I played DA:O  over 7 times and played over 300 hours easily.

I played DA 2 once although i did enjoy the story.

If I was the lead writer I would bring back the warden and A LOT of the previous cast.:alien:

I agree with this 100%. Alot of people said DA2 was crap, and if it was just a stand alone game, they would have that it was good enough. The fact DAO was so awesome is what made it seems crappy.

Hopefully we get something better than epilogue boxes this time around. I still don't know what happened to morrigan and my warden, and I have no clue what happened to hawke and friends.

Also, this time please don't take my dead anders and bring him back to life.

Another thing, the zones/missions for DA:O were, imo, entirely too long. DA2 took a huge leap in the right direction, but possibly overshot. DA:O was difficult to replay mostly because of how terribly long and abhorrently boring the Orzammar/Deep Roads sequence was.

I also would like to ALWAYS have the opition to talk to my NPCS and LI, like in Dragon Age Origins. I was really upset when I had to have a mission to talk to one of my party members in DA2. I liked being able to kiss my LI whenever I wanted in the 1st game.

Hopefully the best from both Origins and DA2 will be in DA 3.

my only real complaint about DA 2 is being confined mostly to Kirkwall, and the waves of enemies appearing out of nowhere.

Sad. Not suprising, but sad. Looking forward to DA3!

One request though, when party members give unique dialogue in quests, it should really be unique depends on which party members you have. Like party members reacting to eachother's statements, different statements depending on who's there, basically have them not ignore eachother. I felt like that was the case for most of DAO but it was slightly improved in DA2.

Finally, the growing prominence of top-down story-telling in BioWare's games is very troubling to me, and I would like to see this progress either arrested, or at least stop limiting the open roleplaying that BioWare's games have traditionally allowed.  BioWare developers have claimed that they always intended to make games that tell stories first and foremost, and that the more black-slate PCs we saw in past games were simply a by-product of technical limitations.  But that means that BioWare's earlier games, very nearly perfect CRPG specimens, were so expertly crafted by mistake.  That doesn't seem plausible.

To be sure I understand:
Are you asking for the player's actions to tell more of the story as opposed to always being fed motivation etc...?

yeah in my opinion what made DA:O way better than DA 2 is the fact that i could make my own story instead of being forced down a linear road

Any chance the DA team can come to Phoenix Comicon (May 24-27)? I'm hoping to cosplay Bethany (and someone else is doing Varric). Would be awesome to have people from the actual DA team there!

I'm curious to see where the series is going. I thought the facebook game a worthy effort, and while I didn't play it for very long, at least I played it, which is more than I can say for any other facebook gaming attempt. I loved the sarcasm option in Dragon Age II, and the game answered the age old question, "Where is all that blood coming from?" with the answer "everyone in dragon age contains 50 gallons of blood". However, it wasn't all it could be. Still, looking forward to seeing where the series goes, and praying there isn't any multiplayer. On a side note, am I the only one who reads everyone's post in the voices of the characters they're using as their pictures?

^This. Prefered DA2 short locations (and same dungeons, yep) more, because in DAO it was always such a long way. Without interaction with outer world.

What I want from the series next is no more than an expansive world map and a fantastic story that leaves no rock unturned. Meaning, don't leave anything out and have a plan for every choice that our characters make in the game.

As the world map goes, I would prefer it to be very expansive and flesh out enviroments, showing how the continents in DA are so varied. Orlais, Ferelden, etc. all need to be visited in some story arc. Make this game LONG. Something Skyrim huge, with so many sidequests, you can get everything your heart desires combat and lore wise.

Companion dialogue and maybe even a party camp like in DA:O would be greatly appreciated. Also, the companions shouldn't be anyone new to the series, such as James Vega was to ME3. We should have companions like Leliana, Isabela, Tallis, Alistair, Fenris, Varric, Morrigan, etc. Hell, maybe even just bring back every single companion we've had so far, except for the Awakening gang, unless you think it would be cool! The friendship and rivalry bars were completely balanced in DA2, unlike DA:O, where all you had to do was give gifts and have 2 second conversations and have a best friend. If DA3 would become longer, Skyrim long, then you would need to tone down the formula.

The story should be massive and huge, and end on a giant climactic battle, in which, like ME2, your characters can die. Heck, the system for the suicide mission was great, so much that some of the same ideas could be used for DA3, where you can send some companions to open some doors or stealth through and get info, etc. With no loyalty, or say, friendship/rivalry, they would die trying, which I enjoyed very much.

I love Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2, very well put together games, and I hope to see some great things out of DA3. Just one more thing. Do not have day 1 DLC that's on the disc, ala ME3 and I think Sebastian. It's not good for business, because people feel obliged to the DLC because it's on disc and you want more $.

Bioware, have fun making DA3, and don't disappoint us with subpar story, lore, characters, and most of all, repeated enviroments.

I was also disapointed with DA2, but I loooove Bioware so I forgive them for that one.. =)

Hopefully they will go back just a little to the DAO style and not make the next one a ME kind of game..
Can take some pointers from ME3 though (just as ME3 needs to take some pointers from DA)

Looking forward to the next step.. Call me if you need some new ideas or a beer... =P

Ahh, Dragon Age.

I could spend ages breaking down Dragon Age 2 and the problems I had with it, but I did it FOREVER ago. Multiple times. Hah.

I remember one post I made long ago where I took the time to critique the game. I thought it would never be read by a DA developer, yet Mr. Epler sent me a wonderful private message assuring me he read it, even if he didn't show that he did in the thread.

I think I've blasted DA2 enough. BUT WHAT THE HELL, LETS BREAK IT DOWN AGAIN FOR OLD TIMES SAKE! WOO!

Art Style- This is my biggest gripe with Dragon Age 2. I absolutely despised the new art style. It felt like an alpha build.

It seemed like so much focus was put on the main characters that side characters' appearances suffered greatly.

Elves were made to look disgusting, in my opinion. I felt they were much more beautiful in DAO, when they appeared physically more "human".

As far as the aesthetic of elves go, and characters in general for that matter, you don't have to make them look anorexic or give them weird facial features to make them feel different.

Change the style of their clothing. Their gaunt. The way they walk, the way they carry themselves, the things they do. Make subtle differences that add up.

Qunari and Flemeth- Great changes. Loved those. No complaints there.

CHARACTERS HANDS- This bugged the hell out of me. Characters' hands were UGLY. Good God. The worst part is that attention was drawn to their hands multiple times, for example Merrill having nail polish, or one scene in particular where Isabella raises her hands up to her face and you can see how bony and skeletal her hands are. Eugh.

For me, a fix to the art style would be a return to the DAO art style. I had absolutely NO issues with DAO's art style whatsoever, and I think that with some work, creating distinctive races and characters with that art style would not be difficult to fathom and create.

Combat- Too fast, too ridiculous, too twitchy. In some games, I'd prefer that speed, but for Dragon Age, I prefer to pace myself.

I feel that the pace of combat was too quick in DA2, too random. DAO's was fine, albeit a little slow.

I'd correct this by slowing down the combat from DA2, but keeping it faster than it was in DAO. Delicate balance, but it can be done.

Archery- Well done. Vast improvement over DAO's archery. My only complaint is how it seems a tad "magical" that a rain of arrows can fall on someone when you shot one into the air. Perhaps if they were magical arrows I'd understand.

Maturity- I want the game to be believable, but still keep its level of fantasy. I want it to be a dark fantasy, not to the extremes of A Song of Ice and Fire, although I do feel that should be a heavy influence, especially when it comes to the next point-

Politics- I think this is something DA2 completely failed on. The politics of the DA franchise can be great- we saw that in DAO with Loghain sacrificing Cailan, and the whole sequence in Denerim with the Landsmeet. Twas wonderful, and I'd love to see something similar to that but on a grander stage.

Dragons- Goddamn it guys, the game is called DRAGON AGE. Give us more dragons. Hell, find a way for us to HAVE a dragon. Perhaps as a pet or companion to take into battle, as we took our mabari in DAO. A dragon as a companion would be MARVELOUS.

Overall plot- Grander. Bigger. More personal, but with a broad depth. DAO had the Archdemon, which could bring hell upon EVERYONE- that worked. Give us something like that, hell, something even MORE problematic. Give us a grand evil, something we HAVE to take down, to deal with. Something we are aware of from the START of the game, again like DAO. Cliché as it may seem, it WORKS. Its favorable.

Archenemy- We need one. We had Loghain in DAO, and he was a consistent enemy. Twas wonderful, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially since I played a Human Noble and got revenge for my family by killing his right-hand man. We need a foe like that again- someone on our level, or someone always BETTER. Give us someone who plagues us, who makes our travel HELL. Make someone make OUR character's lives PAINFUL.

Companions- I found the companions of DAO much more enthralling than DA2's. DA2's just didn't have that same feeling about them. Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana, Wynne, Rabbit(mabari), and the rest all had amazing characterization and wonderful story arcs. I loved how entrenched into the main story Alistair and Morrigan were. I feel we need that again- We need compelling characters with us from the start who are not only attractive and available for romance, but even without romance have compelling storytelling just emanating from them. Speaking about romance,

Romance- Give us multi-dimensional romance options. Don't make the romance options obvious. Let the stronger willed characters come to us with propositions for a romantic relationship, and let the weaker willed characters wait for us to make the first move. Have romantic partners that are in control, and have romantic partners that are quite chaotic. Give us tender options, give us abrasive options. Options, options, options.

Detail- The world, the characters, the story, it all needs more detail. I recall in DAO, the Tower of Ishal, and the birds that flew around it. The books that littered the Circle Tower. Little things add up to a grand experience. Give us much more detail. Much much more.

Me- Hey guys, you know I'm an actual Prince, right? You do realize I can give y'all an inside scoop on what goes on in the minds of royalty? Especially royalty that's unsure of life, what it takes to get through it, his role in the World, what he brings to the World.

Plus, I've got a sexy voice. COME ON, you're shooting yourself in the foot not bringing my ass to Bioware HQ and talking to me. Or not bringing me in for voice over sessions. Hell, I'll take all the time in the World helping y'all out if you need it- which you do.

There we go. That's all I've got on my mind right now, I'm sure I've forgotten a ton of things. Now I'll just have to hope this has been read, whether I find out here in this thread or via PM.

Good luck, Dragon Age developers. DAO was a huge success, DA2 not nearly as much, and I pray you can make a huge comeback and rebound back into having the franchise feel great. Cause honestly?

If DA3/DAO2 or whatever's next isn't up to snuff, I'm bailing on the franchise. And you have to know I won't be alone.

Lets work together to make sure that doesn't happen.
