Just a quick thought and an idea, maybe....

Would it be possible for another game developer, say Obsidian Entertainment, to make an expansion for DA2? (as I understand, they seem to need the work...)

As to those who want a new PS: Torment, please no. PS: Torment was great for its time - not to mention that every developer now seeks to think that self-sacrifice must be in every game today. Not so - and DA2 certainly didn't have this. However, it didn't have the dialogue wheel as well, and to me, the dialogue wheel is kind of cool and represents visual representation of the dialogues in great way. I'm currently playing NWN, the first, and I can tell by just looking at the guide (good thing I've bought it ;) ) how far games have evolved since then.

In NWN, we still have a day and night cycle, but for what reason? In BG1 and BG2 certain merchants' shops were not open during the day or night. Also, there is a lot of walking around, in NWN, to what purpose? And don't get me started on the inventory or the quests. Today, fetch quest are made in a different way in DA2, and I liked the way it was done in DA2. In NWN, you still had to go back to the quest giver to update, not so in DA2 (as I remember it?). I liked the way that DA2 handled the day and night cycle with their being a day quest list and there being a night quest list. And I didn't mind the repeated areas because I got new content for it. [Background disclosure: I'm used to thinking in business terms, my father and mother had a dress factory, so I'm familiar with the concept of re-using designs etc. to save money to make the dress, or in this instance, the game as cheap as possible for the end user, the consumer. Maybe that's why I don't have a problem with it...]

As I've stated before, my big problem was with the waves and waves of enemies that suddenly came out of the ground or appeared out of thin air. This problem, to me, was fixed in Legacy (haven't played Mark of the Assasin yet, but plan to - soon). The combat in Legacy was a bit more strategic than in DA2 which I liked. I also liked the puzzles, more of those please. As for the combat itself, I really liked the faster flowing combat in DA2 - and in Legacy. I played, I think, Golems of Amgerrak, after playing Legacy, or while playing it? Can't remember right now, but the point is this: It was a bore to do combat in DA:O mode again. Alistair shuffling about and maybe hitting an enemy - if he felt like it. In DA2, I issued a command and then people just did it.
Apart from the times where they just stood there....and looked sort of -ehm - dumb? This was also fixed in Legacy...

And from my perspective: please no more save the world, no more secret organisations, no more it is written (that you were born to be a hero....) I really enjoyed the deep and yes tragic store behind DA2, and I also really enjoyed Hawke's personal story. I know the internets can be dangerous plaze filled with untrue rumours, but after playing DA2 for about 2 hours or so, I can safely say to coin a phrase borrowed from the ME universe: I have dismissed those claims. 80-90% of the claims made during the game's first 14 days turned out to be - untrue.

I'm not sure I want a Bioware game to be living world like the ones found in The Witcher 2 or in games like Skyrim or Oblivion. However, I do think that maybe there could be some more ambient sounds like birds singing, rivers streaming, music played in taverns, dogs barking etc.

As for cinematics, please take into consideration that some of us are sensitive to light (I am), and while I certainly enjoued John Epler's great cinematics in terms of rendering? or showing us the spell effects, sometimes the screen were so full of them that I couldn't actually see what was going in during the combat. It made it really hard and difficult to plan the next move. Some of us (like me) are also color-blind.

And what happened to the nice barkeep from BG1 and BG2? where you could get a room and a bed for the night as well as good drink? And the more coin you gave, the better the drink and the better the tale? In short: I miss he rumours from BG1 and BG2. If it is possible, please bring them back :)

The only real problem I had with DA2's endgame was Orsino suddenly turning into a Harvester? I was like this O_O when I saw this and I said to myself 'this doesnt make any sense at all.' And it didn't. On the other hand, the story told in Legacy and the end (cory?) was great. As for selecting a race, I'm neutral on that one.
Selecting a rogue, fighther or wizard is finre with me - for the main character that is.

Vital and must is this:

Make sure that people can still select between a female and male character. And please make use of both the female and the male character in the marketing. And make sure there is a line saying 'play as one of three ........ and play as a male or female' on the back of the box. And try to show the female main character in the box too....

As for the companions out fit, as I said, I'm currently playing NWN, the first. In it, the henchmen upgrade their armour and their weapons all by themselves. Please consider doing this (again) with the option of buying or getting better equipment for the companions throughout the game, maybe after finishing a (chapter) quest-line? Or by making it so that we can buy upgrades or better equipment or armour for them in special shop, perhaps?

It is re-assuring to hear that Bioware is working on an actual game, A DA game. However, a DA game can be anything from a traditional fantasy point and click game to a more streamlined game like ME3 in which point and click movement seems totally gone? I hope - and so do a lot of older gamers I know - that the DA games always will have an option for moving through the use of point and click (moving by pressing the RMB...) If I would ever have a wish granted for a game in the DA universe, it would be this....please keep an option for using point and click for movement....

tl, dr:
Obsidian should make an expansion in the DA universe.
I liked DA2, Legacy improved this, combat espcially
Please keep the point and click movement option
Turn down the cinematics, at least the colored ones, when casting spells
Please keep the option of both a main female and male character and use them both in the marketing

What I'd like in DA3...
  • Voiced protaganist is a MUST. I hate the blank, staring, silence of the Warden in comparison to Hawke.
  • All-inclusive romance options. I don't care about the people whining over whether all-bi LIs are "realistic" or not; more choices are better, especially since if there were het/bi/gay LIs they'd just get modded anyway, as proven with the ME LIs.
  • Maybe a compromise on the combat systems- a choice to have either a more tactical system like Origins, or the simpler system of 2.
  • Another compromise, between conversations- I liked how most conversations had to be held where your companion was most comfortable (their home), but it would be nice to have other conversations while out and about.
  • Please no "fan favorite actor" catering for minor companions, ala Tallis and Diana Allers. (On that note, please no Tallis in DA3 at all.)
  • DON'T SCRAP THE FORESHADOWING IN DA2. Corypheus, the Exalted March- all that should happen in DA3 if you can't do it in an expansion pack.
  • It would be nice to have race/"origin" choice again, though I liked the personal feeling of Hawke's story.
  • Female marketing protaganist.
I'd also like to say that announcing what the DLC was was kind of... a "neener neener see what you can't have!" moment for a lot of DA2 fans, and a really terrible PR move.

It's disappointing to see DA2 and Hawke dropped just like that.

Remember, BioWare collects gameplay data from the players.  They might see a high attrition rate.  If there aren't many people still playing DA2, then the market for any expansion isn't very big.

I would be interested to see how many people are still playing DAO.  I certainly am.

How can we continue to play this game if there is nothing else to do but restart all over again? It's not OUR fault.

To be honest, I'd be fairly happy if importing was simply scrapped. If DA2 is any guide, it's fairly pointless for new protagonists.

So the fate of Hawke and the companions will be left open? What did they do after leaving Kirkwall in a mess? I cannot believe, that you really leave us this way! :crying::(

If Anders was spared and left Kirkwall runnung away with Hawke, what did he do afterwards? Did he continue to fight for and with the mages or did he lean back, fold his hands and watch what was happening, because his 'job' was done? What about him and Justice? What about his Calling? Will he be separated from Justice or will the spirit at least remove the necessity of his Calling? So many open questions about Anders, if he lives after DA2 (and there are a great many players who spared him)! Anders was the one who initiated the war ... not Hawke. Hawke was only a spectator. If there is something important left to wrap up, than it is the fate of Anders and his Hawke!  :crying:

I'd sold my soul for that expansion you threw away Bioware ...  :(

Mark -- Thanks for soliciting thoughts.  The formula is pretty simple.  It really surprises me that BioWare got away from it in DA2 and the end of ME3.
You give players a big, interesting world.  You give them a massive conflict.  You give them compelling characters and relationships.  You give them choice and customization.  You take them on an epic hero's journey, concluding with a still-more-epic final struggle.  You give them an ending that fits the logic and lore you've built, and makes them feel it was all worth it.  Do an A+ job on the basics above, and the details will take care of themselves.
That's all pretty general and obvious, but let me add one very specific request.  "Plea" is really more accurate:
Think long and hard about the ending before you write the beginning.

It looks like a lot of the disappointment in ME3 ultimately stems from the fact that writers were trying to gin up a conclusion in the fall of 2011.  An epic saga deserves better.  You don't have to nail down the specifics, but go ahead and make a call on what this story is about now, if you haven't already.  What is the question being posed to players? (Personal favorite: "Is it worth having magic in the world at all?")  What kinds of decisions or sacrifices are going to have to be made in the end?  What might the world look like when all is said and done?  Then, work backwards from there.

Don't let it come down to some ad hoc, last minute bull session.  Outline the ending first so we can all look back and say, "Wow. Everything makes sense now," instead of "Wow.  Nothing makes sense now."

I for one will start playing DAO again. Not today but tomorrow for sure.
I need the warm fuzzy feeling te game gave me right now because it will take some time before DA3 comes out if BW wants to make something great of it.

DAO has been the same since DAII was released, yet people still go back to play that.

A game with barely any choices that satisfy people will lose its replayability often, and DLC -- no matter how good -- only masks the problem within the game. But a game that has sufficient choices, believable consequences, and is all around well made keeps its replayability.

Things I would love to see:

1. Combat:
I think the DA2 combat was awesome.  I loved the Rogue and Mage trees, both were very fun and engaging.  I never could get into the warrior tree though, it seemed as though most of the stuff was passives and so I was not doing as much actively as my rogue or mage.  Perhaps a tweak to make the Warrior trees more in line with the other two as far as being able to be more involved in battle.I also really wanted more or different special trees.  It seemed as Warriors got boned here as well.  Gone were things like Champion and all we had was Reaver, Berserker or Templar (which you keep saying requires Lyrium but actually does not).  I would love to see Weapon Master, Champion, etc.  Also it would be really cool if the Templar tree was tweaked so you had to consume lyrium pots to use it.

2. Main Character
I want to be able to pick my race/gender/class.  I think Origins was freaking amazing for the depth that it had with the origin stories (City Elf is still my favorite).  While a voiced protagonist is nice, if it means I have to play Hawke again I will certainly be skipping the next DA.  The thing that Bioware was always amazing at IMO was giving a story where I could customize my character to an amazing degree (race/gender/class) and still feel the story was a personal one.  I would really like to see that come back.

3.  Voice Acting
If the main character is voiced (and I am sure they will be) can we get a deeper male voice?  Something like a Vin Diesel depth or deeper?  Is it possible (I do not know so am asking) if we could have a bass slider on the voice at creation or something to alter the tonality of the voice actor a bit?

4. Elves
Yeah, I think *some* of the new elves look okay.  There were a few servants in the Orlais party that were pretty nice (in the Assassin DLC).  But on the whole they are not really attractive.  Can you maybe tweak them a bit to be more pleasing to the eye?  The lore says they are elegant and eye catching/pleasing but the new art direction made them look hunchbacked and creepy most times.  I am not asking for a complete rework, just some tweaking.  Even in the upcoming DVD they do not look like in DA2.

5.  Setting/Lore
I am fine if you need to jump to a new part of Thedas.  I am fine if you want to jump a few years forward or back for that matter.  I do not need to hear about all the details for my grey warden nor Hawke.  I think that perhaps moving to an area further removed from Ferelden would allow you to not have to worry so much about importation and concentrate on fantastic story.  I am good with that.  I want to explore.  Let me travel the area I am in, let me wander the woodland or desert, walk along the beach, climb the mountains - and kill things (or try not to be eaten).   If I am somewhere for an extended period - PLEASE make it change over time.

6.  More creatures than Darkspawn.
It seems as though Darkspawn are the orcs of the world, and I had thought they were more rare on the surface.  I do not mind fighting them, but in DA2 they were pretty common.  Is there more humanoid creatures out there?  I loved the Wyvern in MoA, those were cool.  More of that kind of thing! :)

7.  Companion Armor vs My armor.
I love customization.  I like that I can upgrade, etc.  I want to be able to do that with my companions.  I heard that you may allow it but still keep the look for them and that would be fine with me.  What I would like for *my* character though is an option to have the exact same thing.   I hate how in DA2 I had the clunky armor and Varric had the cool look.  Why can I not look cool too?  The same thing happened in Mass Effect.  Liara, Thane, Miranda, etc. all wore cool cloths and I had clunky armor.  I want to be able to wear the trenchcoat like Thane, or the shadow broker outfit like Liara, etc. It would be really cool if I could customize my looks that way.

8.  Companions
I want to be able to chat with my companions more than at key designated times.  More interaction is best to me.  I love the idea of companion missions, etc. and how they can open up as a part of them, but I also would like to be able to just start up a conversation at times.

9. Romances
Romances should be HARD to achieve.   Not every party member should be charactersexual.  I want to have to earn a relationship not have them thrown at me just for not being a jerk or giving gifts.

10.  Lyrium Addiction.
Yes I do want this in the game.  Make it so that you require more and more for the same result, loose health a bit if you have not had some in a while, etc.  Just make it match the lore more.

11. Choice Matters!
The final and most important - I want my choices and actions to matter and actually have weight within the game.  I do not need to be the savior of the universe/world/etc. but whatever I do, I want to see how I affected things.  IF I have to side with faction A, I want faction B to react appropriately, but I also want Faction A people to recognize it as well.  (As opposed to side with templars or mages making zero difference in DA2).  I would love to see my choices carry real consequences.  Allies gained and lost due to what I say/do.  Fundamental things in the game to change based on what I do (Like in Alpha Protocol when you can let the arms dealer go, kill him or take the bribe - that would either weaken or arm your opponents better).

Wow! Tons of great stuff in here and don't be discouraged if we are slow to respond to your questions etc. Just a few points:

Sorry to hear about this. To be clear, is this specific to not wanting to purchase the Day 1 DLC or the product offering it?

Noted. This one sentence does some up a lot (but not all!) feedback we've received from the past year. As Mike Laidlaw wrote earlier, the expansion pack was looking into many areas of improvement based off of feedback, and we continue to do so.

I'll start off by saying that I didn't love Dragon Age II. I didn't hate it, and I guess I liked it okay, but I should have loved it. I imported my warrior and didn't care to import my mage yet. One playthrough, no DLC. I'll probably import that one and buy the DLC some day, maybe after my next Mass Effect 3 playthrough (which I'm glad feedback is being entertained for as well, but I won't get off track) and whatever else I feel I need to do on Skyrim. Regardless of how I feel, I will go buy Dragon Age III no matter what, because I have to know what happens.

Didn't like:
- Connectivity to DAO. Why import? It barely matters, from what I can tell. In pre-release and even still we are teased with Flemeth, then get a small dialogue with her and that's it. In addition to that, Morrigan clues you in during Witch Hunt to her importance, but nothing in DA2. In the end, you get only another tease, and that's about it besides the small dialogues through the game.
- Hawke. Maybe as a companion, but for all the dialogue we are given to choose from, he is only along for the ride. His story was meh, nothing that necessarily need to be played out in a game.
- Battle system. You've heard most of this before - random spawn, button mashing, etc. Game Informer said it best when they said something along the lines of DA2 catering to an audience it didn't connect with DAO and alienating the ones who did.
- Dialogue format. I know the wheel is easier to use, but it seems to simplify good versus bad too much.
- The obvious repetitions. Same maps and same useless loot over and over. I was determined to finish, but geez it was tough at times.

Liked:
- Skill trees. Easier to keep focus on a character's abilities. I did like customization of a character on DAO too though. Maybe find a happy medium between DAO and DA2 leveling?
- Friendship/rivalry.
- I didn't mind the characters always wearing the same costumes outside of battle, but I wish Aveline could've been on the battlefield in some Blood Dragon armor.

I know what you mean, Ethereal, but I was speaking mostly for Dragon Age II. The choices were so limited and meaningless for most of the game that it gave it little replayability, unless you imported a different save file from Dragon Age Origins or something, or did your Hawke differently, betraying some characters instead of befriending them, etc. I just feel Dragon Age II was way too short and that the expansion could've have saved it and bring hope to the actual fans.

Please remember that while Mark Darrah and Mike Laidlaw might want to make an expansion or new dlc for DA2, they are not the ones who decides this. Higher ups will decide this based on things we certainly can disagree with. But, as the game's industry is today, it is matter of cost to sell ratio: If Bioware made an expansion and it sold maybe 500,000 copies, 10 years go that would have been a smash-hit. Today, not so much. We can cry and lament and shoud all we want. However if an expansion can't earn the productions cost in again, it'll never see the light of day.

However, what Bioware could do was to relase modding tools for DA2, letting pllayers create their own modules and stories for DA2...

As for the end to Revan's story? Isn't that the one being told in KOTOR2 by Obsidian?

I think all cameos should be as few and very limited as possible. I want new characters in our party, I could care less about familiar faces. They had their chance to shine in a previous game, let them be. Doing so will probably give you more flexibility in creating more memorable companions and NPCs for the IP.

As far as more customizable armor goes, I would like to see something like the more feminine armor choices from DAO return. Other than some of the mage robes, I felt like most of the armor my fem Hawke wore in DA2 was a bit...manly.

Of courtse it's not your fault.  It's their fault for not making a replayable game.  They're not punishing you.  They would like to make an exansion, because expansions are cheaper to make and return revenue at a higher rate.  Game developers love expansions.

But if no one is playing DA2, then there's no market for it.  Because the story is so rigid, and the PC is so pre-determined, there's no reason for players to keep playing the game.

I still replay DAO.  But I uninstalled DA2.

Bring back the camp I really enjoyed that and missed in in DA2. Also this is just a little thing but I didn't like how in DA2 loot which had no value but to be sold was sorted for me already in junk. I like going through stuff myself to see what I can sell.

Edit: I would   love to still play DAO but I hate the fade so much I just can't push my self to do it again.

Whereas I am not. The combat is far too slow for for me to be bothered with it, and slogging through Orzammar and the Deep Roads yet again is not something I have any desire to do.  I've only completed DA:O three times; every other playthrough is stalled at Orzammar, because I just couln't face it again.  Ugh.

DA2 is much more replayable for me, thanks to faster combat and no sections where I feel like I'm having to force myself to play.

I personally like the import. My favorite character is the first one I played in DAO (I married Alistair and became queen). I was really upset that I didn't get to play with her in DA2 but because there was the import option I felt like a part of what I did there mattered. Sure, it didn't make much difference, but when I saw characters from my first game or they talked about my character it would make me feel all warm and fuzzy! :) I would be sad if I couldn't continue her story some how.
