I’ve been a fan of BioWare for a few years now, and I enjoyed both Dragon Age II and Mass Effect 3. You’re one of my favorite developers and I’ve never regretted picking up a BioWare game on day one.
I’ve also appreciated how willing you are to talk to and interact with your fans via the forums. Friday, I started a thread on the ME 3 character forums asking one of the writers some questions and she answered the day after. If you were the average game company, I’d likely have never gotten a response or even known the writer’s name.
At the same time, I worry that the conversations about DA II and ME 3 are dominated by the negative reactions. This was true for DA II even before the game came out. When DA II released, I saw people who registered and wanted to talk about a game they enjoyed, but disappeared after a few days or a week. It wasn’t a forum, it was a warzone, and no one wants to get attacked just because they liked a game.
I liked the voiced protagonist. I liked the faster paced combat. I liked the change in art style. I liked that you told a story that wasn’t ‘the chosen one faces an ancient evil that threatens the world.’ I liked that my companions had an individual look.
It feels as though popular opinion was against all those elements, so I don’t know if they’re making a return.Fast Jimmy wrote...

Have to agree with a lot of this post (except about customizing companions, I prefer to be able to choose their armor). I think there were a lot of things that DA2 did well that it does not get enough credit for. I agree with a lot of the criticisms but I enjoyed the main story of DA2, I liked most of the companions and I liked the art style. I even liked Hawke as a character.

I liked that Hawke spoke, but I'd also like to know WHAT he's going to say. The dialogue choices in DA2 were all paraphrased versions of what Hawke said, and they didn't always get the idea across. So please, if the option says something like "I'm Kwanzaabot. Pleased to meet you.", the voice shouldn't say "The name's Kwanzaabot, nice to meet you, you knife-eared Elven git!".
However, I LOVED being able to shape my Hawke's personality by choosing specific dialogue options. So a combination of the two would be absolutely ideal.

I didn't think DA2 was a bad game... but then again I am a very nice person.
Sure, it had its faults, which people have pointed out a million times already, yet I had fun playing it and was looking forward to a little more. Too bad it had to end this way...

I came up with Biotic Nova for the ME3 Vanguard. Gave the idea to Christina Norman back in April of last year when she still worked for Bioware.
I had a biodev(won't name him/her) tell me via PM the reason they won't outright say it was my idea was...wait for it...
It'd get to my head.

That's why I hope to God this thread is the start of what can save this franchise from utter annihilation.
DA2 put them on that road.
Hopefully the fans can steer them into higher success than even DAO achieved.

Wouldn't worry to much about the voiced PC. I think Bioware is standing by that one. And every poll I've seen shows it as being slightly more popular. Critics of that style are just more vocal.Maria Caliban wrote...

That said, I hope they continue to work to make the Voiced PC more accesible to those of us who prefere silent PC's.
Don't know which of the other elements their going to keep.
And I wouldn't say that players are turned of by having a diffrent story than "Chosen one saves the world" but we didn't like how this particualr story played out.

I just hope they have different voice direction next time. I hated the difference in the way the 3 different responses were delivered in that if you chose different types of responses in one conversation, Hawke sounded like he had multiple personality issues. Mark Meer never sounded all that different between paragon and renegade which is the way it should be imho.

One big plus in that game, nova. Omg,
Ahem, to be on-topic.
Yes, I am not big on voiced protagonist, but it's not a pre-order breaking issue for me. As I said, Jo Wyat did an excellent job, but I loved having different voices styles for the fem PCs in Origins so much.
My city elf, for example, had a cocky voice, and from there, I could imagine her speaking every line in that voice, without a voice actor. Same deal withteh sultry voice for my mage.
Heck, I even do this for Wu the Lotus Blossom from Jade Empire (any chance of bringing that voice actress in for a future game?)
From what we are given in the Asunder novel, the epic adventure is not in question. It certainly seems possible that we can have an Origins 2.0. After all, this issue largely affects everyone, not just mages, and templars.
DA2 did a minimal job acknowledging a mage!Hawke. I wish we could see more recognition if we decide upon that class in DA3. After all, it still is THE hot button issue in Thedas, atm.

Must:Should:
- No more flashy-flashy button-bashy combat
- Tactical combat you can brag about among your friends (I'd rather face 2 difficult foes than wave after wave of mobs)
- A deep, engaging story where your choices matter (just like you used to make!)
- NOT a Mass Effect with swords kind of game
- More roleplaying freedom (let us be the character we want to be, not just a choice of 3 kinds)
- An ending which does not include robot-like statues, 5 mile long swords and stuff like that. Angry dragon-god-critter = good, big flamy sword which ate too much too hot chili = bad.
- More different locations, staying in one city got boring after a while, and I'm not talking about reused locales here.
Could:
- Customizable companions (both in looks as in skills, for example: I HATED anders, but had to take him along as he was my only healer...)
- More freedom in character (skill) customization (double wield warriors for the win!)
- Secondary skills that matter, not only combat skills (see the roleplaying part)
- Silent protagonist with fully written dialogue options
- A more realistic style. I loved that from DA:O, even though it was flawed.
- Retcon the elf and qunari redesign. That made no sense to me, being used to the looks of Sten. Just a BIG human with a matching attitide.
It very much sums the things about DA2 up that had been very bothering me. Needless to say that I was no big fan of DA2. Just one more thing:
Please scrap the dialogue wheel/ extreme paraphrazing. It was really...not a good experience (mildly said) to see Hawke say the exact opposite of which I actually meant.
Edit for additional personal thingies:
Also the DA2 elf design = Ugh. I can't emphasize that enough.
And it would be nice to get deeper explanation to the DA-lore (Wardens, religions, Dalish, more world building etc)
I would love if you would tie the many loose plot ends to a coherent knot, if possible. (Morrigan, Flemeth and the OGB comes to mind.)

I'm fine with either, but I preferred the way DAO was built structurally. Compared to DA2, at least.
In such a case, I'd prefer a voiceless playable character.
If future Dragon Age titles were built more along the lines of say The Witcher 2, then I'd for sure rather have a voiced playable character.
It all depends on how the game is structured for me.

More items that level up with you. What I would have given to have had Wesley's shield level up with Aveline so she wouldn't yell at me later for selling it.

No, Sylvianus has been around for quite awhile. Sylvianus was just noting the general trend on a lot of the threads when it comes to DA2. Unfortunately Sylvianus is correct.
Before DA2 came out parts of the forum were engaged in battle. When DA2 came out the forums turned into a warzone. Now that the fevor over DA2 is over some of those who liked DA2 and who left the forum are coming back to express their opinions given the news from Bioware.

Dunno, since i've played both and DA2 ended that way i always pictured my 2 characters meeting and working together ^^ (Amaranthine warden commander if Player sacrificed in DA1)
The warden still has a few years to live from the taint.
I know warden's are supposed to be neutral with everyone but the darkspawn, but you guys saw what happened during the Qunari attack at Kirkwall and how you get worried about what the Warden says. Something big was breweing and maybe it can be mixed up with the events of Kirkwall and the Mages.
Wouldn't it be epic? Decide to help mages or not across Thaedas while something goes on between the Darkspawn and the Wardens? I mean, somehow the blight ended but the darkspawn did not go away and DA1 ending says it's not the last we hear from the Warden (i know it can refer to the DLC's but who knows) ^^
Dunno, just pouring out some thoughts i've gathered since i played DA1 and DA2, all DLC included ^^

I was thinking the Lead Designer is like the Director of a movie - a producer of a movie provides funding and promotes, but the Director is the one who actually makes the movie into his/her own vision.
Again, I'm not sure of the structure of Bioware or how their hierarchy works. Its just that I've not seen Mark Darrah responding to fans quite this much previously (multiple, multiple posts in one thread) and was curious if this was a precursor to him taking the full lead on DA3. It may very well be a demotion, in whcih case I take my comments back. Just throwing an idea out there of the reason behind the increased intereaction.

The thing that bothers me is the direction the developers are taking the game. In Origins, you told the Warden's whole story (even with DLCs) and at the end I felt closure.
With DA2 however at the end of the game, it felt more like Hawke's life was begining. I heard there is going to be a new protaginist in DA3 and I have to say I am NOT happy to hear that.
I think it would be nice to continue Hawke's story since we had no closure whatsoever and having the developers make it up for you, just makes it worse.
I would love to adventure with my "husband" Anders and continue to fight for mage freedom in DA3.
Cutting Hawke's story down the middle and leaving the rest empty, makes me rather upset.
Think of it this way" If your a Harry Potter fan and you read the first book and picked up the second book and found out Harry is no longer involved there is a new main character, the story would not make much sense and it would leave fans rather pissed off.
IF bioware does listen to their fans, I think the best course of action to bounce back from their DA 2 fiasco is to allow players to continue with their Hawk and any person they choose to romance.

Also I loved having a pre-set Hawke (she was beautiful), but I would liked to have been able to tweak her a little bit- having the same hair, but maybe in red, or green eyes instead of pre-set blue. I just always used the pre-set Hawke because I felt like she was so much better presented than creating my own. Like someone before me said- steal user mod ideas- the mod on PC that they had to change hairstyles and such- and you could tweak the pre-made Hawke was great. Love to be able to have that on console.

THIS.
I wanted the hair, I wanted the face shape, the blood on the nose. I wanted to change the hair color a bit and the eye color. Maybe add a tattoo. BUT THAT WAS IT. I loved the pre-made Hawke but being able to change little things about him/her would have been great.
Edit - I will die before I stop using the word epic.

I definitely hope the smart design of nightmare mode can stay. So can the great story+character as well as the streamlined combat that feel responsive and great. (might want to give some pointer to Austin since SWTOR team might've missed that memo).
Only thing I ask for is better camera control and better aoe-aiming. It was tedius finding an angle to aim an aoe right behind a target instead of centered on a target due to "smart" targetting. Seriously.
Also, more cameo plzzzzz.
