The combat and skill trees in DA2 were pretty nifty, as were the party interactions. I wasn't a fan of the new art style as whole, most notably the way combat was made more 'flashy,' and the Darkspawn and Elves. Though I will say the change to the look of the Qunari, that was pretty cool.

Everything else should be like DA:O.

Thanks for (at least) listening to input. :)

It would be great to throw DAII in the garbage and go back to what made DA:O so great. Don't dumb the game down. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! DAII was the Phantom Menace of the series. DA:O was one of my top 5 games of this generation. The putrid sequel was such a monstrous letdown.

And they want to continue this madness to. They say they will take the best of both games but this is not going to happen because "we have an audience that likes DA2". Such crap!

There is a an audience that liked DA2. They're called console users.

I'm a console only user. Haven't played a CPU game since Diablo 2 and Fallout 2.  DA:O was a masterpiece.  DA2 felt like I was playing a game that was only 60% complete

and saying DA2 sucked on the console is absolute horse****. Look every 360, PS3 game outhere and match up DA:O and DAII with them. Yes DAII felt unfinished, had flaws, but to say people didn't even like it is complete horse****

Was a complete win

I disagree. :)

Visually, she was the biggest miss in the entire game. This was a strange attempt to make a character that was introduced to us as preferring a low profile and spending ages in the wilds without caring for the outside world... a character that as Morrigan put it would probably eat treebark without her... into something else, something "stylish" by giving her a completely pointless armor.

Flemeth is an old hag. She is powerful, but not a show-off. She*s the kind of person who lets her power stand for itself instead of making flashy entrances.

At least that was how she was originally introduced. In part 2 Bioware had played too many japanese RPGs (don*t get me wrong, I love JRPGs) and tried to modernize the character into something cool looking. And that was a mistake for the style of DA. Some characters should stay subtile in their appearance if it fits them. Flemeth was such a character. Then she was transformed into some being stuck in a silly armor, with the body of a young woman... and her old face. It's just way off character.

My biggest issue with DA II though was... Kirkwall. Bioware announced it as being so important it's like a character in the game. I was excited to see another great RPG city.
But what I saw was extremely disappointing. Kirkwall is so dull visually. colors and walls everywhere in the same dull earthen tones. Small areas to explore. Nothing that would make this city memorable was found.

You know, Kirkwall was flooded with people fleeing Ferelden. The city could have been made a crowded, lively and dirty melting point. But this potential was wasted. Kirkwall never seemed crowded or unorderly. The same rather bright  color scheme all over didnt help either. Decorative elements where few and far between. I did not feel the poverty and desperation in the poor quarter like I should have. It was all so barren of life and atmosphere.

One big problem for that was the camera I guess. When I look at the drawn map or read about Kirkwall, it does have very characteristic sights. But the entire game the camera (and choice of visiteable areas) does not bother to show it. You know, like yoou could have a long way on the harbor where the camera automatically tilts so you can see the majestic castle high above you. Or the stone carvings or statues or what they were outside.

You are never shown the scale of the city in any memorable way, no view of sights to behold.

In the end Kirkwall was a far cry from epic cities like Midgard of Final Fantasy VII, or many other cities from FF games. Even the Elder Scrolls games that give you many cities and towns to visit everytime manage to make most of them be more memorable than Kirkwall, the single city this story is about.
Bioware can do much better, as Mass Effect shows. Honestly, places like ME's citadel or Omega make Kirkwall look and feel so laughable.

Last deal that is not so much talked about, but I find it important (and partially connected to my above complaint): The visuals.
I play on PS3, and while I have seen both PS3 and 360 versions on HD, I do play in SD at home.
And the shocking thing was that if you take away the high resolution the game looks like a PS2 game for large portions. The place where this is most apparent is Kirkwall of course. The dull texturing and small scope of the areas, the very mapping... When I play this and play FF XII afterwards I must say that the city of Rabanastre looks better, is more interesting and transports a better atmosphere. Almost everything in about Kirkwall looks like from an older PS2 game than FF XII. Denerim from DA:O looks much better, eventhough it is not as important to DA:O as Kirkwall is for DA II.
Of course some advantages of DA II become visible in HD, like higher res textures and some effects... but it is really not that much, and it is alarming when the game can't keep up with a PS2 game when played in SD. This is a thing I only experienced in DA II on my PS3, on no other game.
I remember having my first surprise at the beginning when the dwarf (forgot his name... Varrus?) is interviewed and the camera comes close to a candle on the wall. It basically zooms to a very poorly modeled and textured object to show what to expect.
I was also shocked at the sight of the landscape at the escape from lothering too... I felt like it was forgotten to finish the damn place up.

Of course the PS2-comparison is extreme and does not hold true for every aspect in the game; but seeing that this was my honest impression especially for the main setting of Kirkwall this aspect is one that needs to be heavily improved.

About the rest... well, it has all been told and I think Bioware knows it. The "streamlining" with armor management, the three or so dungeons you keep visiting again and again just with some ways open that were blocked before etc... I think Bioware is aware of that.

I wanted to write my thoughts on Kirkwall as major flaw of DA II down because this is not such an oft-discussed thing afaik, and Kirkwall was meant to be so great judging from interviews before release of the game.
The guys at Bioware said after the mixed reception of DA II that the game "did many things right" beside its flaws, but for me even that is not my feeling. I played many RPGs, and I like some simplifications in gameplay sometimes, but DA II did most things wrong imo.
I have Platinum trophy in DA:O, 100%, meaning I played the game like crazy for a long time... but DA II I have yet to finish a second time, and I didn't even care for the DLC because of the lacking main game.

Bioware really polarizes me. Never understood what was great about Baldur's Gate, but loved KOTOR and enjoyed Neverwinter Nights. Hated Sonic Chronicles, but loved DA:Origins. DA II makes me bang my head at the wall, but Mass Effect 2 was cool. I can never tell if I will love or hate their next game.^^

Alright, you want input on Dragon Age. *cracks knuckles*

First off, it doesn't seem like Bioware has a set PATH in mind for where to take the series. Perhaps that is something that might be good to do. When you have it hinted that Hawke and the Warden might be up to something bigger....to decide to really ignore the path you set just confuses people and have them point and go 'What happened to that? What's going on?" Earlier in the thread it stated that Hawke's story will be concluded in a different form. My question really is HOW, when each Hawke is different, be it gender, love interest and class, not to mention the choices the Hawke made. How many protagonists do you want your fans to end up with at the end of the series? Some are already up to 3. Maybe sticking to Hawke or the Warden would be best in my opinion. Quality over Quantity. I know the company has already stated the Warden's story is over, but nothing is set in stone right?

Secondly, but I'm sure your company is learning this lesson right now: CLOSURE. Be it good, or bad, bring closure at the end of the game or at least the end of the series. You did good with the closure at Origins, Awakening, and 2 while hinting at the future, this is good. Keep it up. Granted some of the closure turned up as the games came to be false, but this goes hand in hand with the planned path I said above. Plan ahead so what happens at the end of one game or expansion doesn't clash with what happens in the next.

Three: Don't RUSH the product. Take your time.

Four: Story flow. One of my problems with 2 was the story flow was rather...jagged. The story didn't seem to flow from one arc to the next well and often times the time skip doesn't seem realistic, especially when it came to your companions. What? Did Hawke really allow Anders to be homeless for three years and didn't give him a key for safe haven either? Did Hawke spend three years pining for Fenris before they figured out what they wanted? After three years, Hawke never got married to his/her boyfriend/girlfriend? Did three years really pass and the Chantry didn't notice their Knight Commander was getting extremely paranoid and forcing her will apon an entire city? Why are the Quinari looking for lost swords after three years, one would think they could gather almost all of them in one. I guess what I'm saying is...three years is a long time to sit on your hands as things get progressively worse. And Zevran is running from the Crows for seven years?

I suppose that's it for now, I may have more later.

Sitting down thinking about the third game i am coming up with a list of things i liked about the first two games and things i'd like to see.

Likes: I liked the open world design of the first game. Every city and place we went to felt important with the exception o circle tower. I like having diverse landscapes to vist. Mostly i liked the interactions of all the different races.
The ability to fordge your own weapons and armor. I was elated with starfang, and i loved wades superior dragon bone plate armor. I used the two all teh time. I am was horrified when i lost starfang and all DLC weapons and armor that i had in the first game (still wish you'd go back and patch that). Please bring this aspect back. It gives you kind of an ownership over the items you have.
i like how you could romance someone, sleep with them a bunch of times and then decide to move to someone else if you wanted to. Being boxed into "this is who you started to romance so you will only sleep with them once and you are stuck with them"isnt a great thing to have.
I liked the idea of one character being able to be pregnant, i wish it was a factor that could happen in the next game, such as you can raise a family with your love interest.
I liked the diversity of races in the first game, having a golem as a party member was super fun, i wished that at vigils keep you could of brought the golems from the basement up to act as guards. Keep the diversity up with the party members, having too many of one race in the party makes the struggles seem too one sided.
I loved the wide range of skills you had in the first game. It really allowed for you to play with on different classes.

What i'd like to see: I'd like to be able to raise a mount of some kind, like a bronto or a wyvren or something. You could maybe find a baby and raise it into a proper mount. Raising it's skills and abilities.

My choices actually mattering and some of the glaring plot holes from the second game fixed. I.E i got an ending that talks about cullen becoming a mad man, i want to see that in the game. I also have a file where anders never was recruited to the grey wardens and justice was never on my team. Those issues need to be addressed.

Let me customize and choose what my Mabari looks like. I got the special edition of the game just so i could have that cool looking black mabari that was to come with the black imporium. I was beyond pissed that it was just that generic mabari from the first game and i had no control over the looks or what no for it (you couldnt even put Kaddis on it.) Allow me to customize my world and my animal. This custominzation needs to extend to the house or "base" you got to do a little of it in awakening with the skull, the golem shell and the dragon egg. Let me do more with it. I want weapon plaques and armor stands to show off my rare and interesting armor and weapons finds. Let me take trophies like an ogres head, or a high dragon skeleton, or hell even a set of qunair horns (arishok anyone?) that would be awesome. Also bring back armor and weapons customizations for my companions.

More high dragon fights and fights with dragon kind. The darkspawn are fine but i want to fight dragons and there ilk more. I had fun in the high dragon fights and really wished there had been more in the second game.

Either do something with flemeth or remove her from the game. she is supposed to be super important to the series but she's played less than a bit part in each of her apperences. I want to know whats going on with her. not in codex form, something that really is happening that i can watch. I am tired of all the story and back ground being hidden in codex's and in comics and novels, if you are going to tell it, tell it in the game. I shouldnt have to seek out parts of the story that are important to character just because. Give me a digital comic for it or make it a DLC arcade game. If you cant do either of it dont include it as part of the story.

Armor and weapon building. This was great mechanic from the first game, i really wish it would return and be improved. It was fun hunting for rare items and materials to make some of the best weapons and armors in the game. It gave you ownership, liscense over things.

I'd like the ability to actually rule in the game if i am able to become some kind of leader. In both the first and the second game it's possible to become a ruler, but only after the game ends. I dont get to reap any of the benfits or make any of the big choices that would allow to shape the world around me further. You touched on this briefly in origins with the courts you held, but it wasnt very much and had no impact on really anything.

i'd like to see the return of shale (possibly back in dawven form) and all your other companions in the next game. I want to know what they've been up to, what happened to the child, and where hawke and the grey warden have gone and what they are doing. i invested time in these characters i really want to know what happened. it might be interesting to even have hawke and the greywarden as either playable characters in DLC or have them as optional party members for some missions that over lap with what they are doing.

Co-op play, something i wish could of been done in the second game. On various missions the AI sucks at healing and almost never heals me. I propose that the person who is hosting cop-op is assigned the lead character role, your friends then get to choose there characters from your companion rosters. this would be useful for more skilled players showing lesser skilled players the ropes and also would allow roles for battles to be better dicated. (i.e mages are support and back up attackers, rouges are instant kills and strategy fighters, and warriors are the meat shields. )

Dont box me into relationship circles. Let me choose whom i want to date in the game be they party member or NPC. I dont like the limited choices i am given for playing a straight character, and i really really dont like the fact that i am stuck to the team. Also if you are going to do romance touch on areas of romance you havent. give me a full scene and not just a series of spliced scenes that show nothing at all. Let me buy gifts or make things for my love interest. Let me take them on dates and raise a family with them. Also if you are going to do that dont box in the relationships, let me be able to date ANYONE should i choose too.

Finally the last thing i really want to see, potions and items going back to how they were in the first game. Cant count the number of times i died or my party members died because my potion was cooling down. I mean that doesnt even make any sense at all.I cant even tell you how pissed this makes me. When your mage refuses to heal cause his spell has to either cool down or because the AI just wont heal you, or they are dead you have to rely on potions. In the first game i was only able to get through the harvest fight on nightmare because i had all my potions stocked from the whole rest of the game and quite litterally had to keep quaffing and attacking to stay alive. It was hard but at least i didnt have to wait when my health was nearly gone to quaff another potion cause i just quaffed one about 3 seconds ago.

I do truly hope that you realize the only reason Dragon Age two even made a good amount of money was simply because it was riding on the coat tails of Dragon Age Origins. However if you continue to run this same crap by your real fans and you make a repeat of DA2 with Dragon Age three you will see that your "fan base" for DA2 is small both in numbers and in mental sensibilities the only people who enjoy DA2 are those who cannot handle the idea of building they're own characters they're own stats making actual choices these are the people who need to have they're hands held while they smash buttons and see blood. Make a action game for these people if you wish to please them but leave good RPG's out of it. Give us what we deserve give us a real sequel. Give us Dragon Age origins with updated graphics and new scenery with new story line nothing else.

When I strip my character down to wearing nothing as what I did with my Warden and Hawke, and prancing around town I want to hear funny NPCs banter in the background. When your character can beat wave after wave of Darkspawn while wearing nothing at all deserves an Achievement, then again this isn't SR3. -_-"

I found DA2 to be so totally different from DAO I was outraged to say the least. I thought DAO was lightning in a bottle and very disappointed when DA2 came out.

I hope you guys fired that "hit a button something amazing happens" guy before you start work on DA3 or else I'll have to skip that game as well.

I liked that DA2 doesn't have a clear villain. Just please give us more influence on the events that happen.
Even in the beginning when your sibling dies, it was totally up to what class you were. Why not let our actual battle determine who we defended and who we failed to defend. I know it could throw the party balance off, but it adds so much to the story. I wanted a party with the Hawke sisters running from the Templars. having to deal with two mages without a warrior would have been my problem to deal with.
And the final battle, please write to character. A lot of it felt like 'we want this to happen, so poof, it does.' 'We want a mage-templar crisis, so let's have them both go crazy- not good. I know kirkwall has a thin veil and all, but no. too convenient.
I also liked how defeat advanced the storyline in DA:O once. I'm not saying it needs to happen all the time, but it was a nice way to have combat and storyline go hand in hand.
Finally, please finish the story lines. That's what we really want, is closure. Even if it's just a hint of what happens, it's nice to hear of what happened after all we've done, even if it's just a hint or a rumor , we'd like to know what our old friends and enemies are up to and let our imaginations go from there.

Re: Mass Effect not being a RPG - it is very much an RPG. Yes it is not what I would consider a full bore RPG, but it was an RPG. In fact, if it were not for the ending of ME3 it would be one of my all time favorite games.

Re: DA2. I always thought DA2 should have been called Dragon Age: Kirkwall or some such. I think the 2 made it feel more like a sequel when it was not really. I think that hurt it a lot.

No it  was basicly a story based shooter or action game. The RPG aspect was all about the dialogue and even here they dumbed it down alot in ME3.

The rest was todays stadart of filling shooter with RPG elemnts nothing more.

Origins on the other hand was a full fledged RPG. You saw right from the begining where this games went and what its intend was from the begin on.

full fledge RPG doesn't have to have slow as hell combat.

Yes party based combat needs that. The moves and actions in DA2 were way to fast to actually react to every single party member. And the waves in thsi game  basicly destroyed every sense of tactical aproach becasue one bad spawn and it was game over. Every first encounter in thsi game was a lucky guess on where the next wave is going to spawn,

No party based games do not have need slow combat. That is why pause and issue commands was done in the first place otherwise all combat would still be turn based. If you want true tactical combat then bring back turn based combat based on initiative.

DA2 has an excellent tactics screen that allows you to create a script for each character. When that is not enough pause and take control works fine. I had no problem in DA2 using it. BG1 and BG2's combat was faster than DAO.

Trust me, I have looked all that up.  And damn I wish I could afford to make an audition tape properly/
And I think the posts about VAs was all in good humor, although it would kinda be unique for a company
to hire actual fans (assuming they could do VA very well) over professionsals.  That would also help solve
the want for a voice for every PC that is different depending on class/race/birthplace/etc.

I consider myself a RPG gamer and I do not need really slow ass combat.  I loved the combat in DA2 and I loved the combat in ME (esp ME3).  I do not see a need for tactical combat to be a defining quality of an RPG.

No one ever said turn based like. find a speed between DA2 and Origins. DA2 was way to fast paced to actually  have tactical influence becasue the execution of these moves was way to fast.  And through that you get an unbalnced pile of **** like in DA2.

Again the combat was more like the one in ME not like in a real party based RPG. Also please tell me what party based games you even have played. Except probably Mass effect.

I have played party based games since Ultima back in 1981 and before then the Akalabeth in 1979. I would list all the party based games I have played, but that list would be long and I may miss a few. The combat does not have to be slow to be tactical. BG1 and 2 did not have slow combat. The series is considered one of the best cRPGs of all time. Tactical does not mean slow.

Sorry, just to randomly post:

I've been pitching this idea every now and again, so considering we've got some serious discussion re: dialog wheel, what is everyone's thoughts on this idea:

That's actually a pretty good idea! It would explain what you're choosing without having to say it outright and then listen to your character repeat it. :)

I really like this idea.

Brent Knowles is the reason why Origins was great. Without him at the helm it won't change.

What about David Gaider?

What about him? Brent Knowles was the lead designer for Origins and left because Bioware was no longer the same company. Laidlaw comes in and we get DA2. Why he decided to change it the way he did? who knows.
