What are these ''Groups'' exactly?

Are they just groups of people for different reasons? Like an Xfire or Steam group or something? I think if this site had a FAQ about the site's features, that would be helpful.

Yes, a FAQ would be a good idea for all the new people.
Groups are for everyone, you can create a group for fun or for a special purpose or whatever you think is useful. You can also make them available for us all or only for your friends and so on... just try it out.
