And yet no one really feels this level of vitriol for that ending.
The worst you could call it was a little cheesy, but that's in the survivor's ending. It managed to be bittersweat, whilst still having closure, and letting the franchise move forward. It was a good ending, and I always thought, well liked.
Now, I'm not asking BioWare copy their past idea wholesale. In fact, I suspect they deliberately wanted to avoid comparison, given how similar the plots are in abstract. But to all of you who hate the ending... wouldn't you have prefered something like that?
Example; Shepard gets up to the Crucible, but is intercepted at the 'firing podium' by Harbinger, who tells Shepard that firing the Crucible will destroy the Mass Relays, even if it doesn't affect the Reapers (which no one is certian about). Since Harbinger doesn't want either, he makes an offer to the Commander; the Reapers will withdraw through the Citadel, and give the Alliance full control of the Keepers. If the Reapers return, it won't be for a long, long time.
But, in return, he wants to leave with all the people already in Reaper camps down on Earth. Emergancy Rations, a comprimise to get the other Reapers to agree to essentially surrender...
Your choice is to either save the inhabitants of Earth, or destroy galactic civilization. If you choose to fight, you have to hold out against direct attack by Harbinger, whilst the Crucible powers up. Either way, you get to see the victory celebration, but whilst there, get a little reminder of the cost, be it someone who lost a relative, or a note that Alliance R&D are already working on rebuilding the relays
Bittersweat, a meaningful choice, and at the end, you can see all the people you met along the way, one last time.
