I'd say that there are two types of gamers. One is story-oriented (your average BioWare fan) and the other is "I like shootin' stuff" type gamer... If you're the first type then the ending is very important to you... if you're the second type, who hates any game under 15,000,000,000 fps - then you probably don't care...

NO... im sorry games that have a narrative must be judged by their ending as it is a FUNDAMENTAL and CORE part of the game... Its that simple.

Yes and no. Personaly liking/hating the ending and the ending being good/bad are two completley sepearate things.

I may prefer ending X more than ending Y, but that doesn't mean ending X is better or better suited for the story. It all depends on what the writer wants nad what HE feels works best.

So no, I don't see the end having a BIG impact. Unless it's full of plot holes.

yes.  specially a game you invest lot of time and money overtime.

all we did in the previous games, all our decisions are irrelevant because of the  crappy endings we just got.

Look at it this way- imagine if you're playing Halo, but the Master Chief looks like a clown. It might not be the only thing that matters, nor something that ruins the game completely, but that doesn't change the fact that he shouldn't look like a friggin clown. Same for this.

Depends on your definition what "good game is".
It certainly does not discard whole first time enjoyment (it may spoil it a bit through), but for me unsatisfactory ending kills replayability completly. And for me replayability is one of the few factors by which I judge how good the game is. If I purchase a game and after finishing it I don't feel any urge to play it again, it is not a "good game" for me.

Interesting question, OP. I don't really want to get involved in this ending debacle (just for the record: I "liked" it, or rather "accepted" it, but I have no problem seeing that others don't feel the same).

But I would still like to point to the ending of another huge pop cultural phenomenon,The Sopranos. It lasted for 6 seasons. It had an enormous fan/viewer base. It was also hailed by critics as one of the very best tv series ever. Those of you who have seen it know that the ending of The Sopranos was even more abrupt than in ME3, and with much larger "plot holes" although I think the more correct term would be "loose strings". The feeling of "closure" was actually much less in The Sopranos than in ME3.

The question is: Has the ending tarnished the reputation of the Sopranos as maybe the best tv series ever? The answer is: No way. It is still hailed as a master piece. It still has a huge fan base. It is still praised by critics. It still gets voted and rated highly in "the best ever" polls. Why? Because the rest of the series is of unquestionable quality regardless of love or hatred for the ending.

The ending is the last part of the game you'll play and the first thing you'll remember when reviewing the game.

So yes, the ending can make or break a game. ME3 is the perfect example.

To be totally clear: We do not hate ME3 because of the ending. We hate ME3's ending and love the rest of the game.

Yes, a bad ending can ruin a good story, as evidenced by all those people who say their memories from ME1 and ME2 are tainted and they can't replay any more. The end isn't just bad, it leaves a gaping emotional wound. Who would want a journey that ends like that?

Ending is a rly important piece in a videogame and me3 ending is just too short and full of non sense.

As the game's story is an INTEGRAL part of the experience, then yes the ending goddamn counts.

I would say it's one of the most important parts of any story driven games.

It's just like a good book where you turn to the last page and don't want to leave the world the author has created. If it's the opposite then there's something terribly wrong with the narrative.

That said, I wouldn't say all the one star ratings based only on a terrible ending are justified. But the lack of any satisfying ending should be reflected prominently in the ratings.

Yep. ME3 didn't just ruin its own ending... it ruined the rest of the series for me as well.

For my ending I picked the destroy option, because red is my favourite colour. >_>

Years ago, back in 1987, the movie "Fatal Attraction" was one of the biggest hits of it's time, generating tons of press due to it's subject nature.

According to the director, the original ending of the film tested sooo badly and left the audiences who saw it so upset, they reshot that entire portion of the film. The rest is history.

Imagine your favorite films or games and how they made you feel. Now, take away the endings of those films and games. Even with the majority of them left intact, that last scenes are what pull them together. To suggest that the endings aren't as important as the the rest of the game or movie is simply foolish.

IT DOES MATTER!

...and if you think they don't, just look around.

Need I say more?

And that's exactly why these 1 percent should play a prominent part in ratings.

The ending is the lasting impression. It is very important. And for many people it was the reason they sat there and watched the credits of ME1 in awe.

When you screw up the ending with plot holes and logic errors and completely turn on established themes of the universe it invalidates everything.

Knowing these endings makes even starting a new character in ME1 far less enjoyable for many reasons.

You have to question everything that used to make sense thanks to the last minutes.

A really bad ending especially in an RPG can ruin a game. A really good ending on the hand can raise a game.

For me an example would be FFIX I really did not like the game at all, but the ending was satisfying and somehow made the whole thing worth it.
The opposite would be ME3 , the ending cheapened everything I'd accomplished and left me with a feeling of "why did I bother"?

OP, hmm sorry, but is there any other way?

Lets take a usual comparison to a car: you have an awesome car with everything perfect in it, but then you either forget to install back seats (DA2) or just put any chairs you could find laying around (ME3). Does it makes a car still great or it makes a car bad?

So sorry, in order to judge a product you must consider every aspect of it, not just good things. And if something is just outweighs other aspects, then so be it. If for example ME3 had something so inceribly good that would outweight ending fiasco, then Im sure ending discussions would be kept to a minimum.

You know - Bioware is like a cow - and I am the farmer milking said cow. The first third of the bucket is amazing milk! I'm all happy as I continue milking the next third, and its top quality. The next third is also top quality milk, maybe even better than the other 2/3's.

As you can expect, I am a happy farmer. Feeding my cow top notch grain etc, graze the best pastures of cash, purchasing all of the proper DLC etc. has left my cow and I happy. I take good care of my cow, and my cow gives me the bestest milk!

So as I get the last few drops of milk into the bucket, my cow (Bioware) freaks out in her stall and gets her poop covered hoof stuck in the bucket, running all over and making foul mess. Now I'm ready to take a chainsaw to the beast. Stoopid cow.
