Does a Ending decide how good a game is?

Star Trek has some of the best examples of this, they spend 40 minutes setting the story up and then spend 5 minutes wrapping it all up. In some episodes it works so well you come away breathless and in others you just shrug your shoulders and go and do something else.
To that end you can look at the 4 endings of the latest Star Trek series. TNG had a good final episode, DS9 built up a war, ran with it, lost a character, wrapped everything up and STILL managed to get a mystery ending that left you wondering. Voyager had a meh ending that they pulled out of the Bioware school of writing it seems and Enterprise had a pretty depressing finale.
Of those endings DS9 was the best because they wrapped up pretty much every story line and still left a little wriggle room to keep fans wondering. That is how to make a memorable ending. The series itself may not have been the best, but it finished well.
Likewise you can look at other Sci Fi endings. Babylon 5 wrapped up the Shadow War extremely well, we can ignore the final season as they were not expecting to make it so had to wrap up the story in season 4. Farscape finished it's 4th season by wrapping up some story lines and then hitting us with a massive cliff hanger, luckily for us they finally made the mini series and wrapped everything up and it became memorable. Some of the Dr Who story arc endings have been bleak and tinged with sadness but still left you feeling hope. Serenity, it had a lot of sadness at the end but it finished with a joke and hope at the end.
The we get some of the bad ones, Blakes 7 (British Sci Fi in the 80's) was a great series that ended with a very bleak and hopeless ending. The new Battlestar Galactica, a really good series that blew it in the last 15 minutes. The Matrix, which had so much potential to do more but ended up doing what we all expected.
The ending is very important, botch the ending and it will be what you are remembered for. Get the ending right and whatever flaws you may have had in the story fans will forgive you.

last 5 mins = better ending then bioware gave us. Closure for all the characters. granted a bit bleak (and terrible acting) but it finishes the story and leaves a little opening for a possible future.

so youd give a good review to a restaurant that served you a fantastic meal but for desert the chef came out and sh*t on your plate? The rest of the meal was delicious! Youd give a good review to that cruise liner that ran aground because the captain wanted to wave to his mate on shore? The rest of the cruise was fantastic!

Well let's agree to disagree. You can continue to rage, while I will load up ME1 and play through the trilogy. I wonder whose blood pressure will shoot up first?
Ah yes, a man can't cut it to you straight without being a barbarian in full rage mode. Pardon me, I'll pander and beat around the issue, and fill my post full of rainbow colored fluff in the future. I have a remarkably high tolerance for stress and bs(psst, it's because I vent it), so I'd wager yours will. Good to see a man who knows his limits though, didn't even make the attempt at a defense. Sound the retreat sir, it's back that way *points behind you*. Go safely, thanks for playing.
Oh what you was looking for an online fight? Well too bad I don't fight obvious virgins. too messy.
To the rest of you. Aren't ya'lls examples too extreme? Hitting an AIDS truck, being fed poo for dessert, the ending is not that bad.

i would have accepted a blakes 7 'everyone dies' ending over what we were given!

That brings back memories

I had problems with the game before the ending, but the ending was not just the game ending it was the series ending. I think it diminished the series as a whole for some people, so they hold it against the game.

The ending isn't bad because Shepard dies. I would wish Shepard to live of course, but that's not why I want a different ending. The ending is bad because:Asguardwolf wrote...
The end was predictable I mean how else could they have ended it you saw in the dreams scenes the clues you know from every story in history to be the ultimate hero you need to make the ultimate sacrifice and it was done. Sure some more details on the crew after would have been nice but hey that's what DLC are for and i am sure there will be a few to come.
(1) Destroying the mass relays in all endings destroys closure and removes the fundament of any stories we might want to tell ourselves.
(2) The godchild sequence is disconnected from the rest of the game.
(3) The godchild sequence makes no sense and creates giant plot holes.
(4) The Normandy crash is a betrayal of all those who romanced someone on the team.
and more.

No, but it can destroy a game where you are supposed to be able to affect the ending.
^This.
Concise summary of what's really wrong. Should be sticky at the top of the ME3 forums.

I think that the answer is likely no.
However despite the game being good, and ME3 is more than good, you do not feel "good" after finishing a game with a terrible ending(whatever the cause)
Endings have to be carefuly developed and planned or yes indeed they can ruin the full experience of the game.
