For those unaware, the dex hotfix majorly screws up Shale's crystals. They lose their base stats like the armor/defence for large ones and damage/crit/ armor penetration for small ones, and just get the green lighted bonuses.

For those who have taken Shale: did you make due without the hotfix or did you accept the fact that you are gona have to deal with a very gimped golem?

I didn't know it had happened until too late, and it was only by mistake that I failed to re-introduce the dex hotfix when fully reinstalling my toolset-broken game.

So my Shale's base stats were perma-screwed, but the crystals worked as they should.

As for how I did.....the game wasn't too tough as a result of gimped-Shale, but then again, maybe the party wouldn't have wiped so easily on some encounters (silly Archers in Denerim, ambushes are meant to give idiots an advantage, not make tough enemies stronger) had the tank not died.

On my second playthrough I'm not using the hotfix but keeping Leliana and Alistair in the active party, neither of whom I used last time, so we'll see how it goes. At the very least, I think I can expect a patch before I'm done to correct the dex issue, seeing as I'm only 12 hours in and I expect a solid 50-60 out of this one as well.

What do you plan on using Leliana as? Daggers and bows will be weaker without the hotfix ( but so will the enemy archers), and you are pretty much out of other options for the bard.

However: Lethality would mean 100% damage from cunning. So if you ammass cunning you will have great damage, good songs, but hilariously low hit rate

Wait...so you can't just remove the hotfix to fix it? What do you mean perma-screwed?

Leliana works just fine as an archer without the hotfix. I'd much rather a slightly gimped Leliana than a greatly gimped Shale!

Yep, shale cannot be fixed if you remove the hotfix after you have him in the party

What if you had installed the hotfix after you got Shale?

Wow this really sucks....

I just removed the fix from the override folder and went back to a save before I installed the fix. The base stats on the crystals show up, but when I unequip or equip one it's as if the base stats have no effect.... They really should have mentioned this bug in the description :|

I was under the impression whatever is in your override folder is just temporary override whenever there's something in the folder.

Since Shale is DLC and not original content, I think override folder interferes with the Addin folder and permanently messes things up.

I prefer to wait for the patch from Bioware rather than install the hotfix. So should I forget about developing Leliana's ranger skills until another playthrough? I bring her along for her lockpicking skills. It would stink if I leave her behind. Shale is now my main tank. I love her to death.

There's no reason not to bring Leliana if you want to bring her.  The lost damage isn't really a big deal.  We're talking about half of her strength, which isn't a huge number anyway if you're focusing on dexterity and cunning like you should be.

Her Bard songs, Arrow of Slaying, Scatter Shot, and a number of other abilities make her an awesome character to bring with you.  Plus, lockpicking!  And you can teach her the Ranger specialization, too.  :)

It shouldn't. Perhaps try removing the hotfix files and disabling/re-enabling the DLC. It's not like the hotfix directly and permanently overwrites any files.

You forget that the dex hotfix also increases base damage and attack for the bows, so leliana takes a hit there.

Also, i think duelist is better for her, for the passive +10att/defence mode

Those other buffs aren't bug fixes, though.  They're buffs.  Personally, I don't think that they're needed because archers are just fine if you build them properly.

I took Ranger over Duelist because 1) it fits her character more, and 2) I'd rather have a pet than a small attack bonus and another defense mode.

Is this with the official dex and bows fix? I have the dex only fix, does it cause the same problems?

I seem to remember reading somewhere on this forum that installing the
hotfix in Documents/Bioware/Dragon Age/modules/single player/override
does not cause problems with Shale, while installing it in the
suggested location (Documents/Bioware/packages/core/override) does
cause problems. Worth a try, maybe.

For my part, I'm waiting for an official, QA'd, supported patch.

EDIT: Here's the thread with the alternate override folder suggested by a toolset jockey:

I agree with you(those addin files weren't modified), but I can't test with re-enabling since as soon as you disable Shale disappears forever. If you just re-enable on the main menu is has no effect.

I'm starting to wonder if the bug is there in the first place with or without the hot fix. As in the hoxfix only causes the text on the item description to disappear, but there were no effects in the first place. Can anyone confirm?

I will try that thanks, but seeing as even without the override the issue is still present, I'm not holding my breath :(

There is indeed a display bug on shales damage, armor penetration and crit chance, what i have trouble believing is that this is something related to the dex fix. From what i know no original files get modified by applying overrides, so there just is no logical way this can happen. Of course it will corrupt future savegames but not old ones.

How do you know this display bug for shale was not always there? And yeah i call it a display bug because my damage goes up when equipping an offensive crystal and i cant find any real problems.

I didn't know. That's why I was wondering if the bug was already there in the first place. I feel much better now knowing it's only a display bug, haha thanks.

This worked for me:

"There is an workaround! Use old package core override and remove armor. It will stay at 4 (due to bug /images/forum/emoticons/grin.png). Then make a new save game, exit and put hotfix in single player single player override. Now base armor is 4 (due to save value). Get some armor, and it will increase properly. Hope it helps."

I did exactly as it said (you may need to create an override folder in single player) , and when i re-equipped shale's armor it did indeed count the bonuses, Went from 16 armor in stoneheart to 39 after swapping the hotfix files location and re-equipping the armor.

Problem with "fixing" a corrupt savegame is that you will get too much armor. If you install the dex fix shales crystals will loose there armor value, but armor class is saved in the savegame. So if you had a crystal that gave 15 armor and a base armor of 5 before you installed the fix, you will have 20 armor after the fix too. Its just that swapping out that crystal wont change anything.

This does not affect old save games though.

39 armor is the actual armor i was supposed to have. A large brilliant spirit crystal gives 23,xx armor, and shale by default has 16 in stone heart mode with all skills learned.

Today was my first time i actually saw any defense/armor/damage on shale's crystals
