heyas;

i have recently become more educated about the dragon age dalish language.  which leads me to conclude i have been using some words incorrectly.  :X  now i know there's not a vast pool of dalish/elvish in the dragon age lore... but even fan-generated lore would be fine.

dahlen  -- this is a term of endearment for a child, or someone younger or lower in social status than yourself.  (a literal little kid, a student, an apprentice, etc.)  what i'm looking for is what the 'child' would use as a term of endearment for the elder.

lethallin  -- this is a term of endearment used between just about any one, right?  is there another term that lovers use between themselves and not 'mere' friends, family, clanspeople, etc?

   thanks a bunch!

I've found the wiki to be particularly helpful in this area.
http://dragonage.wik.../Elven_language

Perhaps the word hahren could be used to address an older elf? Or, if the elf is the mother, mamae.

There are many terms of endearments examples on this site as well.

If you're clever, you could perhaps create a word using the little root ones they give you on this site. I did that once: bora'durgen'en - the name of game I completely made up (why? I felt like it lol, though it was based on a game I used to play as a child), which means something like throw stones.

Hope that helps somewhat. I am by no means an expert, lol. Posted Image

From DA2, some Merrill quotes:

(If romanced and Hawke Falls) Emma vhenan, hold on!
(When clicked, if romanced) "Yes, ma vhenan? Oh! Did I miss something important?"

(If Hawke romances Merrill)
Merrill: Ma vhenan, I was thinking... maybe your house needs a garden.
Hawke: I suppose it wouldn't hurt.
(Otherwise)
Merrill: Hawke... have you ever thought about planting a garden?

So I'd go with "ma vhenan" (which is I think "my heart"?) as a term for one's lover.

I *almost* got that the ma vhenan right in The Hunt, where Galahan and Sindel exchange vows XD So close. Should have left out that stupid apostraphe...

Hahren is elder, but I'm undecided if it's an endearment or title like 'wisdom' or 'councillor'. The DE origin has it that your mother and father, one the Keeper and the other a great hunter IIRC, were forbidden to become bonded by the clan's elders. What interested me from that is that the Keeper doesn't have ultimate power over the clan, and that these elders, either by virtue or age or something else, could bar something like a marriage and have it stick. Not that the story ends well after that, but yeah...hahren. I dunno. So far I don't think we've seen it used in the context of endearment, unless you count that funeral song.

The City Elves, at least, treat it as a title, and Shianni can arguably receive it at a relatively young age.

The DA Wiki page is absolutely fantastic, I'd also recommend taking a look at some of the codex entries (particularly the ones from the dalish camp), as I found that they had a fair bit of interesting language in them.

The best thing to do though, is experiment, there's a lot of open structure with DA's elvish in comparison to Tolkien's work, so try something new. Just don't go too crazy with the apostrophes =P
