I apologize in advance for unintended spoilers in the following:

So I guess gamers aren't the most patient crowd... who knew?! Some might say some of the actions taken against BW and some of the statements on the endings have gone too far. I tend to agree, but I can relate.

The game is pretty great. Most players concure. At least all the way up to the endings. The endings are unclear and lack closure. Now I actually like open-ended wrap-ups usually, but ME3 is way too liberal with it's open-endedness. I hear a lot of fans muttering something about plot holes and I've been pondering this term a lot and how it applies to this particular game. The problem with the term, plot hole, is that it usually covers some oversight in the writing process. Something missing from the plot which ruins the meaning somehow. At first I thought those fans might misuse the term, but after thinking it through, they might not be far off. The reason why I myself like open endings is that they leave room for interpretation and mystery. In this case we are talking about "empty spaces" and not plot holes. This is the main difference as I see it; omission by the design or omission by accident. The former is an empty space left open by the author on purpose to create room for interpretation as mentioned. The latter is a plot hole where the recipient of the given media is left in the dark because there is no sense to be made. I realize that these terms overlap and can be hard to discern from one another, and that might be why I was left thinking that; "yeah, ME3's ending might be plagued by a few holes..."

There is taste involved in this. The average gamer is not accustomed to open endings in general. They occur, of course, but they are far apart in my experience. To appeal to a larger audience the most common approach is of course the finite ending where most loose ends are tied together. I enjoy the more artistical approach where we're left with questions. However, there's a place for this kind of artistic work and it's usually pretty niche. I actually liked that BW tried to do this with ME, but I think they did it wrong. I'm not convinced that this was the right way to go, but if they had left the question of Shepard's survival open and just wrapped up the fate of the crew mates then the outrage might have been far less.

Don't get me wrong, I believe whatever DLC they had planned before the complaints, would clarify a lot, but as they no doubt learned by now - this will not stand with the impatient consumers. If we even for a minute are to believe the indoctrination theory to be true, then BW has failed in my opinion. If they were to implement the notion that Shepard is actually indoctrinated then he has been the first victim of the most subbtle indoctrination to date. None of the other indoctrination victims have failed to complain about voices in their heads or showing visual signs of it. In short - there should be traces. And something like this should not be kept from the player - since we are, in fact, Shepard. We should have been shown more than seemingly logical dreams or manifestations of the subconscious. I would be very disappointed if the indoctrination theory holds up - it has been hidden too well. I instead credit this misguided attempt to find meaning where there is little, to a crowd of disillusioned fans grasping at straws of conspiracy theory.

I don't have the solution for BW - they are indeed in a tough spot. I hope they find their way out - but unfortunately a job poorly done with the endings has left them with few choices. They have to be pretty brilliant to find a solution that will appeas the outraged. No matter what they choose to do - they should have implemented this in the actual game and whatever they come up with will undoubtedly be welcomed lukewarmly at best.

The universe is a vast place and an ending to this game that left us with questions instead of answers would have been accepted - but not illogical, almost non-sensical segments that came out of nowhere and left the player nowhere... This will not stand. Good luck to BW in saving the burning franchise.
