-------------------What do you guys think?
Dear BioWare,
First off I wish to thank you for taking the time to read my letter and
for making such great games. I’ve been with your company since KOTOR I and
haven’t looked back since. You are the
only developer I consistently buy from today due to the great quality of your
RPG’s.
I’m a huge fan of Sci-Fi and believe that you have created the single greatest
universe in the genre; even surpassing the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek in
my books. Mass Effect has become my
favorite gaming franchise of all time and has changed my perspective of what
games can be. So as soon as Mass Effect
3 was announced I went and pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition from my local
GameStop.
After picking the game up at midnight I could not put it down! Everything about the game was pure
genius! You guys poured your heart and
soul into the game and it really shows!
The shooting mechanics were very refined, the guns were varied and
satisfying to shoot, the graphics were gorgeous, the dialogue was engaging, the
story was insanely epic, and the consequences of my previous choices were all
over. The emotions strung throughout the
game were remarkable. I was brought to
the brink of tears multiple times. I
have never before had a game that I became so emotionally involved in. Give yourselves a pat on the back for that. It was pure gaming gold; the apex of
storytelling and immersion. This is
trilogy is truly one of the greatest achievements in the history of gaming.
Then, I got to the end and was completely devastated.
I had anticipated being depressed at the end because it would be the end
of a great trilogy. But, instead I was
stomped on by the sheer lack of closure in the plot-hole filled ending that you
gave us. The following quote is from
Casey Hudson in January 10 of this year on GameInformer’s website regarding the
ending of ME3:
“At this point we’re taking into account so many decisions
that you’ve made as a player and reflecting a lot of that stuff. It’s not even
in any way like the traditional game endings, where you can say how many
endings there are or whether you got ending A, B, or C.
It’s more like there are some really obvious things that are
different and then lots and lots of smaller things, lots of things about who
lives and who dies, civilizations that rose and fell, all the way down to
individual characters. That becomes the state of where you left your galaxy.
The endings have a lot more sophistication and variety in them.”

Casey Hudson, Mass Effect Project Director
But the catch here is that you did give us ending A (control
the Reapers), B (synthesize with the Reapers), and C (destroy the
reapers). There is almost no variation
among the endings. Casey Hudson has
broken his promise! There is a video on YouTube
that shows all of the endings side-by-side.
In that video 95% of the footage is exactly the same just with a
different color effect! Throughout all 3
games we consumers were led to believe that our choices mattered and that the
story and endings were truly shaped by our choices. In the last 10 minutes of the game, all my
choices were thrown out the window for 3 incredibly similar endings full of
plot holes.
Why was Joker running from the battle? Why must all the Mass Relays be destroyed? Doesn’t the destruction of a Mass Relay cause
a supernova wiping out the entire system?
Did I just commit genocide on par with the Reapers? What’s with this Catalyst crap? If the Catalyst lives in the Citadel then
what is the point of Sovereign coming in ME1?
Why are the two squad-mates that charged the conduit with me all of the
sudden on the Normandy? Why does Shepard
HAVE to conform to these choices? Why
can’t I say NO and watch my fleet win/lose on their own strength?
This franchise was built upon the fact that your choices
matter and shape the future of the galaxy.
The thing that bugs me is that the entire foundation for this franchise
is tossed out the window when it matters most!
This series was the best written piece of interactive entertainment I
have ever beheld! But the ending feels
as if it’s written by someone else that has no knowledge of the series! Also, where is the description of what
happens to the galaxy I left behind? I
was expecting something like Dragon Age: Origins where there are slides of text
detailing what happened after you finished your quest. But alas, I was treated to Joker walking out
of the Normandy on some random planet with two characters that should probably
be dead right now.
I don’t know BioWare…Why would you formulate endings like
this? Why would you blatantly lie to
your fan base about the end? This is
literally a slap in the face to all your loyal fans. You are losing a lot of your fan base out
there guys. I for one will not be
purchasing another BioWare or EA product or DLC unless new endings are
released. This is an absolutely terrible
way to end the best trilogy ever conceived in the history of gaming. If new endings are released, I will forgive
you and return my faith to your company.
I am part of the ‘Demand a Better Ending to Mass Effect 3’ movement on
Facebook. We want you to understand that
the reason your fan base is so upset about the endings is because we are so
emotionally attached to the wonderful universe you have created. 99% of the trilogy is absolutely perfect…it’s
just the 1% at the end that sours the whole thing. If nothing else, please let us have at least
some closure on the situation in the form of an official statement.
A concerned fan,
Jacob
