So, why FemShep?

But after a few playthroughs it feels somewhat "new"
Also, I wanted to romance Garrus.

Reason 2: I cannot stand the way Male Shepard talks.

To me it helped give MASS EFFECT some distinction from other games. And Hale rules.

You realise the female demographic is starting to be seen as a market that can be more readily expanded (the male market being that much closer to a saturation point). If only designers could move away from the blatent misogyny that they just can't seem to resist .......
Why the **** wouldn't the female demographic be seen as a great market, anyway? Not all of us want to play Cooking Mama and Fruit Ninja.
I still don't understand why society insists on putting up these dividers. One of the things I love most about the ME universe is the fact that nobody judges you when you date a Turian, an Asari, or someone of your own species of the same gender. And nobody protests the fact that FemShep can kick some ass. Because it doesn't matter that she's a woman.

I am however always heavily partial to a pleasant or sexy female voice over a male voice (around 95% of my music collection the last 10-15 years have featured female vocals for that very reason), so any other great female voice actress - like Jo Wyatt (from DA2 and SWTOR) or Claudia Black to mention two of my other favourites - would also have put me firmly in the FemShep camp.
I've tried starting MaleShep playthroughs in both ME1 and 2 but Hale's voice had simply become so synonymous with Shepard for me that it felt all wrong, so I never got very far.

Also, being female it's nice to play as a female character that's actually like... Action hero-ish. She's, you know, real. As opposed to a female character that you can tell was basically created for the purpose of being eye candy. (I'm looking at you, Tomb Raider. As much as I love you we all know why your design came about...)

She is Lady Hawke too. Cool, I might have to play a lady Hawke. Lol, i would buy another Bioware game if it Claudia Black and Jennifer Hale had major parts in it.Fl1xx wrote...
Jennifer Hale is my childhood; why would I not choose femshep/lady hawke?
Back to the OP,
1) The voice acting is better
2)Some of the scenes do play better.as FemShep
3)I am more amazed why people do not change Shep's appearance at all. That just blows my mind.
4)SO is in the navy, and if I keep playing a femshep that looks like her, then I hope can get out of taking the trash out.
5)The same reason why I do not buy any rpgs that do have a character creation screen, because when I read books, the heroes are how I pictured them to be in mind. I was Sherlock Holmes and MacBeth. I was the one who enclosed Fortunato in a wall. II was the dwell in the dream land of Ulthar. Juliet will always look like my best female friend in high-school. Roxanne will always look like the woman who did her laundry on the same night as me, when I was in college. It is about being able to put your own spin on the story, no matter the gender or race.
Someone has probably allready mentioned this. Lady Hawke in DA2 is voiced by Jo Wyatt
edit - yes figured someone would mention it.

I still have my M!Shep playthroughs and I enjoy them a lot too, but it's nice to be able to have a female protagonist who kicks ass and isn't blatantly sexualized.

For videogames to be entertaining, historically, they had to be contain challenges. Simulated violence was a very effective way of doing that. Women are generally not seen as being for violence, so once that transformation started taking place, boobs were added (then there's also things like the original designer for Lara Croft slipping with his fingers and making her about seven times as...well endowed as a normal woman, and the team just decided to stick with it).
Fortunately, video games are growing up, femshep is just one example. Sun Lian is another.

I also like Hale's acting better, Meer made Shep sound like a solider, which Shep is, but I felt it was too flat.
Plus Garrus. FemShep got the Garrus romance in 2 and that alone is worth it.

I got sick of the "badass male always saving the day" cliche that is in every other video game. Few games have strong female leads and I had to try playing a FemShep and loved her. Like someone said in an earlier post it's nice to have a "non bimbo" female option.

In the case of Mass Effect, I did try once to play a male Shepard, but I felt that Jennifer Hale was the superior voice actor. I may try again someday, but the male voice was simply too distant/unemotional for my tastes.
I think you will find that most female players prefer to play female characters. This is not always true; I've seen/heard of some who prefer to play the male version.
Guys have their own reasons, and honestly? Some of them sound outright creepy to me, as a woman. But I guess whatever floats your boat.

^This.
I never even thought to play a male character (why choose that when I'm forced to deal with male protagonists in most games?) but I do also think FemShep has the better voice actor.
As a female gamer who's been playing games for quite awhile and dealing with entirely male casts or questionable female heroines for the most part femshep is a breath of fresh air. Why NOT FemShep?

I'm not trying to hate on people for choosing a female character, but I don't understand why such a large percentage of players do in comparison to other games.
Think Skyrim. I almost never see female characters, I've watched tons of videos of it.
Or WoW (hold the rage, please). More females, perhaps, but not that many more.
Even Dragon Age: Origins lacked them.
Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect seem to have an oddly high number of female characters. I've heard the voice actor for FemShep is great, but honestly I find the male one to be equally as great, if not better.
So why, She-pards, did you make that choice? Do you think the voice acting is better? Lesbian scenes/staring at dat ass?
Jennifer Hale

That said for a different Shepard I highly recommend having one. It feels much different going from male shep to fem shep. Especially now that Traynor is aboard (the accent, AHHHHHH). If I ever play again, my fem sheps going rugmuching.
