Did you only try it in ME1? Meer has improved a lot. I couldn't stand him in 1, but in 2 and 3 I actually think he did a better job. Hale sometimes seems to go overboard on quite a few lines, not sure if this was her or less effort put in on the direction.Brass_Buckles wrote...
In the case of Mass Effect, I did try once to play a male Shepard, but I felt that Jennifer Hale was the superior voice actor. I may try again someday, but the male voice was simply too distant/unemotional for my tastes.

Being that strong female characters are still grossly underrepresented in video games (and a lot of popular media in general), being given the opportunity to save the galaxy as a woman is kind of a big deal, even by today's standards.
So, why NOT FemShep?

In all seriousness, though, because I'm female and I love the fact that in Mass Effect, male might be default, but is not canon. Female Shepard is just as awesome as Male Shepard. She can accomplish just as much as he can, with the added plus of style and an excellent voice actress. Don't get me wrong, Mark Meer is a good VA, but Jennifer Hale is just made of win.
Besides, why would I want to play as a guy? Pretty near every other game I play, I have to play as a guy. That gets boring after a while. Besides, if I play as a guy, I don't get to see the hot guys in romance scenes...

So, why FemShep?
1. Because I seriously dislike ManShep
2. Because Jennifer Hale is amazing
3. Because I like having a strong, brave, determined, competent, charismatic female lead character who, armored boob-plate aside, isn't portrayed as existing primarily to be an object for men's desires, and I think that having this changes the entire context of the Mass Effect experience in a positive way.

Exactly. I'm a female gamer too and I like playing as a female character. All my Wow, SWTOR characters were female. I can just get into the game easier. Plus Jennifer Hale is a great voice actress. That's part of what helped me get into the character of Shepard. Same reason it was so easy to play the newer Tomb Raiders. I've been a fan of Keeley Hawes since Spooks, plus her Desdemona Lady Macbeth and her Emily in Canterbery Tales was fantastic. Too bad she's not doing the voie of Lara any longer.

I'm not trying to hate on people for choosing a female character, but I don't understand why such a large percentage of players do in comparison to other games.
Think Skyrim. I almost never see female characters, I've watched tons of videos of it.
Or WoW (hold the rage, please). More females, perhaps, but not that many more.
Even Dragon Age: Origins lacked them.
Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect seem to have an oddly high number of female characters. I've heard the voice actor for FemShep is great, but honestly I find the male one to be equally as great, if not better.
So why, She-pards, did you make that choice? Do you think the voice acting is better? Lesbian scenes/staring at dat ass?
Voice acting is huge. Jennifer Hale is amazingly good. I played maleshep once on my first playthrough in ME1 and never went back. There's such a big difference.

Meer was apparently told to act like a stoic space marine. Consequently, every scene beyond "Shepard is angry/frustrated" is voiced with the same deadpan, emotionless monotone that makes it impossible for me to take any of it seriously. Romance dialogue is physically painful to endure.

Mmmhmmm
But yes, on every game that gives me the chance to choose, I play as female, more games should come with this option... specially if they are not going to include any line of voice acting, like you know.. Ghostbusters's video game... main char could have been a female recruit *shrugs*

But mostly the first...there are only a few games that I'll play if it won't let me play as a female character, so...yeah.

Agh, Ghostbusters. You know that annoyed the hell out of me. They said it was just a male character because they wanted a set character to go with the script. Which was a lie because he never talked.
The real reason was that the character was modelled on one of the games producers. Yeah, he used his position to INSERT HIMSELF as main character of the game.
I never bought that game for exactly that reason.

But to repeat what others have said: lesbian romances. Mass Effect also seems to have a higher proportion of female gamers than other games... mind you so do most RPGs.
