So, why a FemShep? I'd say voice acting more than anything else, because Liara has the exact same character and personality whether you're a Female or a Male Shepard, it doesn't change anything, except of course for the "Lesbian" implications of being with her if you're a FemShep, which I guess can be something interesting for some... if not many male gamers (I honestly doubt that there's a high number female gamers whom actually went FemShep and chose Liara as their LI, although I know there are... but very few I'm sure).
In the end, though... the question shouldn't necessarily be "why a FemShep"... but more "Why did BioWare allow us to chose between a male and a female Shepard if they consider that the canon Shepard is a male to start with?". I mean... how many RPGs out there actually impose a "canon" protagonist without being able to chose the sex nor even the appearance? I can think of The Witcher (and the sequel) right now, and that game was great.
So BioWare could just have imposed us a unique appearance male-only Shepard in ME1, but they didn't. I'd rather ask THEM why a FemShep option to start with, rather than asking the players whom merely went FemShep (for those who did) simply because "they could".

I don't know, there is just something about Femshep. I do tend to play females though, I find I get more involved in the story with them.

She's not oversexed and is a relatively
realistic portrayal of a woman. Perhaps a very fit woman but I guess you
would be if you were a marine. Very seldom do you see strong female
figures in games, and as something unique and respectable, I chose
femshep.

I'm a woman IRL, I find it easier to relate to one in game. Not much more to it than that.

Plus, my boyfriend always plays male characters so someone has to balance our account out.

I imagine quite a few of the reasons would overlap.

BTW I'm still mad that there weren't more possible straight LIs for femShep in the final game. Oh well at least I got to have fun flirting with Vega some.

I just like it more than herp derp another dry cut standard male hero. I just think it's great people actually have a choice.

But mostly because I'm female.
Though the Garrus thing is really, really nice.

I'm not trying to hate on people for choosing a female character, but I don't understand why such a large percentage of players do in comparison to other games.
Think Skyrim. I almost never see female characters, I've watched tons of videos of it.
Or WoW (hold the rage, please). More females, perhaps, but not that many more.
Even Dragon Age: Origins lacked them.
Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect seem to have an oddly high number of female characters. I've heard the voice actor for FemShep is great, but honestly I find the male one to be equally as great, if not better.
So why, She-pards, did you make that choice? Do you think the voice acting is better? Lesbian scenes/staring at dat ass?
I felt the character creator for male Shepard is absolutely horrible. Female was infinitely easier for me to use. That and I could imagine Jennifer Hale's voice coming out of a woman of any nationality while I can't do the same with Mark Meer's.
One other reason: quite honestly, it's probably one of the few times that I can witness a woman actually go through pain of trying to make it out the other side. It's very rare to see that nowadays apart from a few exceptions. Usually the women in any story are beyond cared for to the point that if they get hurt it's no big deal. Seeing Shepard with scratches on her face after tribunal was hit actually made me happy because I could imagine she was real.
For those who may be scratching their heads about what I'm talking about think Bella Swan in Twilight (the books as I don't know how she was done in the movies) and compare that to Buffy (fromt he series), Faith (BTVS), or better yet, Bridget Fonda in her last movie. Can't remember the title so I can't tell you which one it was. It had Terrence Howard in it though.

This, pretty much. Women want to play as a strong woman, and men want to play as a male character. Just the way it is, and the way it should be. More games should offer a woman as the main character along with the usual male character (assuming you have a choice).
Unless you're a sexually deviant man who just wants to play as FemShep just for lesbian scenes, which I find...disturbing.

40% of gamers are woman.
I think its is an answer.
I`m playing female cuz I`m a female.

Lol at nr.3 ?
I know it is your opinion, but guys can't be cool military heros?
If anything it is femshep that is unrealistic in that scenario....
Why exactly is femshep unrealistic?
I agree. Watch Xena.
Canada, Germany, South Korea, France, Spain, New Zealand, Denmark, Israel Miltary frontline troops Women.
Multi tasking for the win makin sadwiches and kicking the bad guys asses, only lady's can
Correct me if I am wrong, but don't they lower requirements for women in most of those places? Less miles in X minutes etc? If so, that is just plain wrong.
I have nothing against females in military if they adhere to the same standards!
I know they have lower requirements in the police force strangely enough.
It depends on the kind of physical test. When I was in the Navy, we had to do the same amount of sit-ups as men because our physique did not put us at a disadvantage there. We had more time in the run and did less push-ups because, in those cases, our physique really did affect our performance. On the same note, we weren't given any consideration when it came to body fat percentage eventhough our physique affected that also. I had some very curvy friends who were not heavy in any way but, when measured, didn't fall within standards.
Physical fitness testing is not a test of one's military skill and ability, but of a measure of one's physical conditioning. Wars are not won by how many situps each side can do, and it's not a foot race, either. Fitness testing is designed as a very general judge of an individual's health. That a woman might not be asked to do as many pushups as a man is not a concession that she is weaker, and needs a "break", but an acknowledgement that given physiology, that x number of pushups demonstrates a fitness level that is equivalent to y number of pushups for the other gender. The numbers change by age, as well. An 18 year old female may be asked to do more on a fitness test than a 40 year old male, but it in no way suggests that the male has now become a less competant soldier. The reality is that cultural bias is what keeps women out of combat positions.
I was in the army...fml. My hips screwed me over when it came to measuring BMI. My platoon sergeant actually suggested that I might "bulk up" my neck, so that the porpotions would be more in line with what the charts are asking for. Heh. Eh.

And because I wanted to romance the men and I'm not into writing/roleplaying gay male relationships. I'm cool with it, it's just not personally my thing.
I have a bunch of male friends who had female characters too, in all the games you mentioned.
