I play female in all the games you mentioned, cause I'm a female. Plus, Bioware recognizes you are female more than other gaming companies. Games like Skyrim if you are playing FP, you don't even remember what your character looks like after awhile.
So, why FemShep?

I actually started off as maleshep, but after hearing some praise for Jennifer Hale's voice acting, I decided to give femshep a shot, and she's been my definitive shep ever since. While I understand that Meer has stepped his game up recently...I still feel that Hale delivers the better performance throughout the series (my opinion, after playing both in ME1 and hearing clips of both side by side from 2 and 3).

Considering the sheer amount of female oriented mods for Skyrim, I find it hard to believe that there are more male characters being played.
As for why? I always choose the female character when possible. Sometimes for aesthetic reasons, sometimes for comedy (female blood elf warrior dual-wielding 2 handed weapons? hilarious).
I know at least in WoW, I just didn't like how all the males (undead and blood elf excluded) looked more like body builders than magic users. I usually played caster/healing classes, so it didn't make sense to have Arnold Schwarzenegger wearing a robe casting frost bolt.

The data linked on Kotaku said that 82% of all Shepards are Meer Shepards (this comes from EA's data). It's really a BSN phenomenon, because here it seems like 70% of all Shepards are femsheps.

Did you ever consider that women play video games too or...?

General consensus seems to be that female Shepard has a better voice actress. My paragon Shep is a FemShep, my Renegade is a MShep. I like them fairly equally, leaning a tad towards MShep because he has my dashing good looks.

You'll see more female characters in pc skyrim as time goes on. The female bodymods and custom armor has a tendancy to be far more popular.
Nude mods have been out since day three or so of Skyrim. I've noticed a greater trend in killing and stripping the women than building your own and staring at it.
Which is kind of scary of you think about it.

Maybe more females play Mass Effect than some of the other series you mentioned?
I've actually conducted a "mini-study" if you will on what draws in each gender to a game, and the majority of the responses were:
Males pay more attention to gameplay.
Females pay more attention to character and plot development.
Not trying to use stereotypes, as I did go around collecting opinions from multiple forums and people I know in person (maybe around 150 opinions total). That being said, ME is more story and character oriented than your average game, therefore it can draw more female players in. I know that's what got me interested, and I always prefer to play as my own gender. Easier to connect to a main character with your same gender, IMO.

Jennifer Hale's brilliance is found in A LOT more then just ME but I do think ME3 is by far her best work to date.... I can't even begin to describe how good she did in some scenes....
It's really sad but I honestly feel bad for her knowing she had to lay down the voice tracks to such a horrible horrible ending that did the character she was voice acting as no justice what so ever.

Never did go for femshep. Iam a guy and like it that way, and if I want to stare at ass all day there are much better sources for that kind of material.

To be bland, it's mostly because of the third person perspective for me...
Pretty much every game that is played in 3rd person and that let's me choose, I choose a female.
Reason: When I have to look at a persons ass for hours at a time, I'd rather it be a nice round woman's ass.
Simple really.
P.S.: That the VA is brilliant, I consider a bonus

I'm female, and my original Shep is actually male. My second playthrough of the series, I chose FemShep. In my honest opinion, Hale blows Meer out of the water in the VA department, and I feel way more immersed in the story by playing as FemShep. Also, the scenes with FemShep and Liara are a major bonus. :3

I just had to say. I love that avatar.
On topic. i prefer Fem shep's VA to mansheps. She seems to care more about the role than her paycheque. I really hated FemHawke in DA2 initially but then i tried the male hawke and deleted it instantly. FemHawke's VA has grown on me as well since then. No way in hell can i play a male hawke...*shudders*.

Well, mass effect is a game of possibilities and if i have the chance to play her I will in at least a few playthroughs. Also I believe that mass effect may have more female players than other rpg/shooter games...

I don't understand it...I hate FemShep. And everyone talks about her looking better, but I couldn't disagree more. I just think the face doesn't go with the voice, which I don't like either. Meer's voice seems heroic and awesome, and just goes with Sheploo's face.

Because I'm a woman. Rawr.
Also, the FemSheps have better variation in facial customization, in my opinion.
Jennifer Hale's voice is also fantastic.

I love the Honor Harrington books (David Weber, military sci-fi, awesome!). And she's a strong female character. I like both genders of the Shepard character, but the female version seems to get more of the angst of being a commander that has to make difficult decisions regarding life and death of her squadmates, the war effort and ultimately the fate of the galaxy (in whatever version/ending there might be).
It boils down to personal preference, really.

Since I'm female when I have the option I generally play female first playthrough, male second playthrough. Mass Effect is the only series where I haven't been able to complete a playthrough as a male character because I just can't stand Meer's acting.

Because I like women who are badasses. We don't get nearly enough of that in the gaming world, and when we do, they are usually mostly there as a sex symbol. I also really like Jennifer Hale.
I have a male Shepard save file as well. I just felt like starting out with a FemShep.
