I played a male Shepard, but Jennifer Hale is quite simply a better voice actress.

Heroines are cool too.

My Skyrim character was a female darkelf assassin.

Those stealth kills where all the sexier.

It's a combination of considering female Shepard to be more badass than male Shepard, and also being a female myself.

But mostly it's the badass aspect.

For me its because Male Space Marine Heroes are a dime-a-dozen. Halo. Gears of War. Resistance. Warhammer: Space Marine. Dead Space. The list goes on.

Female Space Marines though? As in a full on, actual player character who's not a distaff counterpart of another male character in the story? Metroid is pretty much the only other option. That's why FemShep is awesome. Certainly helps that Hale is an excellent voice actor.

Great voice acting which makes a lot of situation somehow feel more naturally portrayed (and badass). Besides I have a thing for strong female characters(played a fem warrior in Skyrim btw). :P
My first playthrough is(or was by now) usually with a male shep and a more RPG-style impersonation (so to speak). Second playthrough is usually female and more like an interactive movie where I control the lead but am not in-character.

Good example for a scene where femshep works better for me: At the beginning of ME1 you meet a crazy scientist with the renegade dialog option "I can shut him up", followed by knocking him out.
With maleshep it's feels like being a jerk. Femshep is simply badass.^^

And this of course:

Ditto!

What?!  Any of you really think NO Females play this game?  LOL!  Well... obviously a few do.

It's an RPG. That's why you are able to play both. I have 3 of each and I still like the femshep more. She's more badass and also a bit of fresh air.

I'm a girl and I always like to play a girl. Jennifer Hale is just awesome. I've loved her ever since she was Sedusa and Princess on "The PowerPuff Girls". Plus, there's Kaidan and Thane *growl*
My friend's husband always plays a woman too, and in a drunken rant he told me why:
"I think it is awesome that a girl can kick ass! I love making a hot blonde and making her the biggest bad ass in the world!"

a couple of things...first...I prefer the femsheps voice acting. the male shep just seems a bit rushed and clipped sometimes to me. femshep rolls a bit better to me.

second...the lesbian scenes..lol

third...if I am gonna run around a make believe universe for 60 hours...I want to look at something nice!! If I wanna see a dude..I go look in the mirror...lol!

my wife plays a male shep for the same reason...she thinks he is cute!! lol

Because seeing a woman head butting a krogan is so much better. Oh and better voice acting.
It's also much more relatable for me because I am female as well.

LOL, you did this, too? I cracked up. I think I laughed even harder when she got a breeding request.

Because I secretly want to be a girl or something

Also because male sheps usually end up looking so generic

I'm sorry do I have to justify myself for playing my gender now?

I never implied that girls don't game. But I don't think many more females are going to play this game than another.

I'm not saying building a female character is a deadly sin, just curious as to why.

And lots of the remarks tend to be about the ass, so that pretty much confirms that it isn't because a lot more female gamers chose ME3.

Also, every other space marine is male, makes for a nice change.

I think a lot of female players replying here think this question is also aimed at them.

Which, if it was, would make it completely ridiculous and make the OP seem...odd?

I'm male in real life, but play both male and female characters in a lot of RPGs, mostly in order to experience the difference. E.g. in mass effect you actually do get different reaction to dialogue whether you're male or female, which I enjoy. Also I think Jennifer Hales voice acting is amazing.

I play Male Shepard, my wife picks FemShep. Just makes sense.

Also, Commander Shepard is portrayed as a realistic female, not some bondage wearing **** who has to dress in skimpy clothing as a single reason to be the protagonist. I think that encourages a lot of women to play as her for that reason especially. Why play as a woman just because it's an available option when you can play one that's badass and realistically portrayed?

FemShep comes across to me as a real woman, and I respect BioWare for that.

I actually wrote a whole blog post on why it feels so exhilarating for me (as a woman) to play the Mass Effect series through with FemShep: http://shannon.users...et/blog/?p=1828

It really just comes down to -- it's a lot of fun.

Because Jennifer Hale is awesome, because I'm a girl, and because somehow femshep kicks even more ass in female form.

Plus, having femshep tell Liara's dad, "No one messes with my girl." sounds awesome.
