Because
I'm female
Love Jennifer Hale's VO (blows the german one out of the water)
Garrus

All three make it pretty much impossible to play a MaleShep. Too many games where the protagonist can't be a badass female soldier. ;)

I'm not trying to hate on people for choosing a female character, but I don't understand why such a large percentage of players do in comparison to other games.

Think Skyrim. I almost never see female characters, I've watched tons of videos of it.
Or WoW (hold the rage, please). More females, perhaps, but not that many more.
Even Dragon Age: Origins lacked them.

Dragon Age 2 and Mass Effect seem to have an oddly high number of female characters. I've heard the voice actor for FemShep is great, but honestly I find the male one to be equally as great, if not better.

So why, She-pards, did you make that choice? Do you think the voice acting is better? Lesbian scenes/staring at dat ass?

I'm female. That kinda influenced my decision.

Actually I can think of a practical reason to play females in ME3 over males.
Males take up half the bloody screen. I tried multiplayer with a Drell, and even with his skin tight clothing he still blocked the action far too much for me....

I'm a woman. I had to play male characters most of my life. When I found companies that gave me the option of playing female, I started buying their games and skipping the others. Now I only buy games where I have the option to play female. I do play the male option but the majority of my characters are female. Like Me.

It's one reason I've always bought BioWare, Elder Scroll and Fall Out, and Fable 2 and 3. I an very happy these companies realize that we do play video games and give us the option of playing a great female character.

Jennifer Hale is amazing. Meers is solid, but I find Hale to be much better. FemShep quickly became my default, and I'm a guy.

Plus, I never could create a male Shepard to rival Sheploo. He looks awesome, already, and has the best textures in the game. I could always create great looking (not just pretty) FemSheps, though. No matter which of my few FemSheps I use, they really feel like they're mine, if that makes sense, despite the gender difference.

Plus, did I mention Hale is awesome? ;)

I'm a guy, but I chose to play as female Shepard simply because I think she is far more badass than the male version.

Jennifer Hale does a wonderful job as the voice actress. I don't mind Meers' voice acting, but I think Hale does it much better.

Eventually I'll probably play as male simply to experience some of the other side, but for now, it's FemShep all the way, baby.

Though I have to admit, I don't care for the new default female face. I went with my old custom version.

I think a lot of it comes down to respectability. If you play games just to look at the female character model, that's your call. Personally I like that FemShep comes across as both sexy yet also very mature and intelligent. More than a lot of most games can claim with their female characters.

Very much prefer playing as male in games. Doubly so in RPG's with stories and choices. Don't really care about gender with games that don't have either, as I don't really immerse myself INTO my character as much as say the world. (See: WoW for example)

In games where you can't pick gender I am fine with being female. (See: Tomb Raider for example).

The "Watching girl ass" argument is so bad IMO, I can see how people would prefer the other genders voice actor though.

I have a paragon femShep and a renegade manShep.
The female one is my favourite though because Jennifer Hale is a fantastic actress, she just seems to put so much more into the role than Mark Meer.

And then there's the Liara romance thing that just works so well with femShep.

I'm not too keen on his weird assumption that everyone is male.

Yep I do this too. I know this means I may skip some games I like but if you don't give me the option then I ain't giving my money more often than not.

Because I'm a girl, and when I have the choice, I like playing as a girl. And I always choose that option when I can.

Plus you get the better LI's... Kaidan and Alistair if you play a girl.

Girl Gamerz. Lesbian. Dat ass. etc etc.

I'm on my second run through ME2->ME3 and I'm fem shep. Did my entire first run ME-ME2-ME3 with male shep. Paragon soldier, your fearless and selfless leader type.

I simply can't relate to male characters as easily as I do females. Romances, in particular, are weird when I'm coming at them from a male perspective. Comes from being female, myself.

Oh, and Jennifer Hale is just that awesome.

Honestly, the answer is simple. Dracula (The original novel, not any of the god awful movies). Sounds kind of weird, but Mina Harker was the first literary character I ever really got hooked on, and ever since, I've had this soft spot for tough, take charge, no nonsense female characters. So, when I found out you could play through as a hard core, ass kicking marine woman, I decided to do a FemShep for my first run of the game, and Jennifer Hale's performance in ME1 was so good, FemShep was cemented in my mind as Shepard.

I do have a dude shep play through. Just one. Mark's decent, but he's not in Jennifer Hale's league when it comes to voice acting. So, I play through as FemShep.

Lol at nr.3 ?

I know it is your opinion, but guys can't be cool military heros?

If anything it is femshep that is unrealistic in that scenario....

No, in fact. Male military heroes are incredibly over-saturated.
