I'm a guy, and in my opinion, the big tough alpha male hero is overdone to the point of boringness. I don't try to relate to the characters I play, I see them as the characters of a story, and the story of an ass-kicking lady is invariably more interesting to me. Ever since I was a kid, any game that I got the chose the gender of the main character, I've chosen female (excepting dwarves) They just make for more interesting stories.

It doesn't hurt that Jennifer Hale did an amazing job,

This.

Jennifer Hale. Mark Meer really stepped up his game this last entry but Hale is the superior of the two.

No, in fact. Male military heroes are incredibly over-saturated.

Again, another opinion; another one that I will disagree with, at that.

What makes you think that male Shepard is trying to be a big, tough alpha male hero?

My Paragon Shepard certainly never acted like he wanted to dominate or boss about everyone around him.

I've never done a Renegade playthrough, myself, so I can't comment on what it's like.

I play both a male and female playthrough.
And I have to be in the minority as I prefer the male voice actor.
He sounds like a badass who has a touch of a cold whilst she sounds like she's voice-acting a cartoon or something. She can't do subtle, everything is over-acted. Only scene I can think to show this off hand is the one where Shepard electrocutes the merc in Garrus's mission and says he's working too hard.

I've never understood why people praise Hale so much. She's a great voice actress, and I love her in other roles, but her FemShep has a tendency to sound incredibly forced, sometimes to the point of being downright annoying.

That said, I play FemShep because I'm a girl and I like playing girl characters. I'd say with all the special attention BioWare gives to its female fans (especially as opposed to a lot of other developers), they've got a higher percentage of female players in their fanbase. Simple as that.

When I play a third person shooter sometimes I prefer to stare at a shapely females' butt for 100+ hours.

Some of this, plus the voice acting, plus it's nice to be able to choose, and not go mainstream

Because as a woman I can relate to Jennifer Hale's delivery more than Meer's. I've been a manager so her businesslike presentation is spot on. A lot of guys find it "too butchy".

And I do play Skyrim as a female, too.

Partially due to voice acting and partially because for some reason I find a female marine going through the same trials and tribulations to be a much more compelling character.

Lol at nr.3 ?

I know it is your opinion, but guys can't be cool military heros?

If anything it is femshep that is unrealistic in that scenario....

Yes heaven forbid there be a society in the future that gives the same opportunities in the military that it gives to men. I mean the mass relays and the blue alien race of all females and the cosmic robot killers from beyond the stars, that's okay. But a female soldier-hero and leader? Ridiculous.

Okay unrealistic was saying a bit much. But less likely then ;).

In my head, if I, as a guy, is going to spend 100+ hours on a game where you mostly look at your characters butt, I'd prefer it to be a female one, simply because that's what I like the most compared to a guys. Also because in my opinion Fem-sheps voiceacting is better, more emotional, than bro-sheps.

Well, theres three reasons: First, you are forced to watch a persons butt for a high amount of time. It should be a female one :P. Second, the voice actor is better, at least in my opinion. Third, replay value. Its content that you paid for, use it. It makes a new playthrough fresh and exciting.

Also, lesbians... yeah, were all going there. Leave us be.

Jennifer Hale is my childhood; why would I not choose femshep/lady hawke?

She is Lady Hawke too. Cool, I might have to play a lady Hawke. Lol, i would buy another Bioware game if it Claudia Black and Jennifer Hale had major parts in it.

Back to the OP,
1) The voice acting is better
2)Some of the scenes do play better.as FemShep
3)I am more amazed why people do not change Shep's appearance at all. That just blows my mind.
4)SO is in the navy, and if I keep playing a femshep that looks like her, then  I hope can get out of taking the trash out. Image IPB
5)The same reason why I do not buy any rpgs that do have a character creation screen, because when I read books, the heroes are how I pictured them to be in mind. I was Sherlock Holmes and MacBeth. I was the one who enclosed Fortunato in a wall. II was the dwell in the dream land of Ulthar. Juliet will always look like my best female friend in high-school. Roxanne will always look like the woman who did her laundry on the same night as me, when I was in college.  It is about being able to put your own spin on the story, no matter the gender or race.

Got to go with the krogan on this one...can't really see what is wrong with a male hero. Talking about American society on a higher level females are starting to outdue males in school. Less than 45 percent of college graduates are now males, males are doing worse in every single subject, and in younger generations female wages are starting to outstrip male wages. If anything we need more strong male role models because males under 30 are starting to become lost in shuffle of society. Not saying anything wrong with femshep but implying male role models are overdone is untrue.
