Okay I'm trying to get a Dwarf Rogue Archer to Lothering, but I'm wondering what attributes are best to raise.  Short and long bows benefit from both strength and dexterity (so the manual says), so I've also raised strength with a slight bias to dex.

At present damage is really low ; with a shortbow (longbow is WAY too slow) I hit for about 11 and crit for 20.  Combined with the slow attack speed, this does not make for a very strong offensive character, or one that would benefit a group much from what I can tell.  What am I doing wrong?  I've picked the first two line of talents so far.  Does it get any better?

Dagger and Archery are broken for some reason and still has not been addressed.

dexterity currently does not contribute to dagger or bow/xbow damage.

without the dex hotfix, the only viable archer build is longbow+lethality+high cunning, find a bow with rapid aim.

I do think archery could use some improvement, but for all the hate I see, I think a lot of people discount the advantage of instant target changing and the protection that range provides. When your melee is running to a target, he is not doing damage. The archer is plinking away the whole time, switching targets as he kills. I would estimate my archer probably gets a good 20% more hits in the average battle than my melee characters. Kiting is a much more viable strategy with a ranged character, and archers have the tools to keep their foes away.

Use Biowaer's Dexterity Hotfix

Usefull Skills:
- Meele Archer (No more interruptions)
- Critical Shot (A good amount of damage - don't use it with Rapid Shot)
- Arrow of Slaying (A very good killer - brought me the Heavy Hitter [Achievement] in Lothering)
- Rapid Shot (Good against the white names [normal] enemies)
- Aim (good at long range and Against Elite [Yellow] or Bosses [Orange])

Put some points in Strength (for Crossbars) and WIllpower (more Energy).
Crossbars shot slow but deal more damage while more Energy is always welcome so you can use more abilities.

I have the game on PS3 (not connected to net and never will be ...)  Considering this, is it worth going ahead with an Archery build?

If you will never go online you will never fix archery. However it's your game and you can play what you want broken or not. your main character can be an archer while you play your party members.

PS: I love PC gaming:ph34r:

Has dexterity been fixed so it contributes to dagger or bow/xbow damage (on ps3)?

No dexterity fix on the consoles. We are awaiting a patch.

A lot of people, especially console users, are confused as to exactly what weapons are affected by bugs and what the "hotfix" for the PC version does.

Dexterity does contribute to bow damage on consoles and on the PC version as shipped (without the hotfix).  Only two weapons are "bugged": daggers and crossbows.  Daggers get 100% of their damage bonus from Strength (the same as other melee weapons) rather than 50% Strength and 50% Dexterity as they were supposed to.  Note that this bug actually makes daggers stronger than they "should" be.  100% damage from one stat is better than 50% damage from two stats.  As for crossbows, they get no damage bonus from any attribute at all, making them utterly useless--even at the very beginning of the game when none of your stats is over 20, a shortbow (let alone a longbow) will do more damage per shot than a crossbow, on top of firing much faster.

The hotfix changes many things, only one of which really comes under the category of "bug fix".  First, it fixes daggers and crossbows to work the way they were supposed to all along (daggers getting 50%/50% from Strength and Dexterity, and crossbows getting 100% from Dexterity).  Second, it greatly buffs all the missile weapons, increasing the base range, armor penetration and critical hit rate of all the bow types and giving every bow and crossbow item in the game a +5 Attack bonus.  Third, it changes shortbows from 50% Str/50% Dex to 100% Dex, like crossbows.

The hotfix is controversial because of the latter two changes, which aren't "bug fixes" at all.  The global buffs to missile weapons apparently make battles with enemy archers disproportionately deadly, because enemies use exactly the same combat rules and item stats as player characters.  And the shortbow change is controversial because it makes shortbows almost strictly better than longbows (remember, 100% from one stat is better than 50% from two stats--do the math) which doesn't make a lot of sense given that longbows have higher stat requirements to equip and most of the unique bows in the game (including all the "best" ones) are longbows.  It's kind of as if someone pushed a patch that made heavy armor more protective than massive armor.

Archery is fine the only problem is you NEED a guide to make it work
