First off, I have no intention of hating on Thane, or his many fans. Thane is a great character, but part of what makes him great is the pathos of his rapidly approaching death. He reminds me of John Wayne in the Shootist, or Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino, a dying tough guy who wants to go out with his boots on in a good cause.

Thane's death is epic, and far better than wasting away over months and months as he coughs his life out. The man saves a councillor and holds off a cyborg assassin bare-handed while dying of a degenerative respiratory condition. I mean, how much better an end could he have? It seems to me that Thane's end is a fantastic one - why are people upset? Were his fans pulling for a miracle cure?

Miracle cure, probably.
Also Kai Leng is a schmuck.

I agree. His story arc would've been kinda pointless if he didn't die. The option to cure him could still be there though.

Thane had the most satisfying ME2 cameo in my opinion.

People really liked thane. I think his death was well written however people do not like seeing the ones they like/love die. Even if it was a good death.

requesting that bioware expand upon the endings makes sense due to the downer that is the current "endings."

Requesting that Thane find a miracle cure diminishes the game.

I thought Thane's story and death were fantastic. Terminally ill drell holding off Kai Leng and saving the Salarian councillor? What. A. Guy. We knew he didn't have long, and he made his time left count.

I imagine those that romanced Thane may be feeling a little sore though.

Dude, Thane's part in ME3 is maybe the best story segment in the entire SERIES, aside from just the one game.

What he did was just epic.

I thought Thane's part of the story was well placed and he went out like a BOSS. the only thing that left me wanting more was there was only like 3 dialog options to talk to him and they never changed no matter how many times you went back to the hospital.. I was personally expecting more.

People expected some miraculous cure too much. He was a tragic character. From his introduction in Mass Effect 2 and his confession that he was dying, people started wondering how he would go. And I think that was a great death compared to choking on his own blood or something.

At the very least, it's one less question to have after the end of the game. We know what happened to Thane.

I may not have liked Mordin, Than and Legion dying but I think it fit the plot very well and it was a good send off for those characters.

wouldn't it make more sense to ask this in a thread were people were complaining about it?

The only complaints i've heard are from FemShep-Players who had Thane as LI. And apparently there isn't a lot of special dialogue referencing that. In Addition, with Thane dead, Jacob no longer interested in Shepard, that leaves only Garrus as Hetero-LI.
uh, i think those are all the complaints i've heard so far.

They are upset because Bioware actually mislead them about a cure (support the Cure Thane movement on their facebook page for instance) and because there is really no difference in a romanced and unromanced Thane. And to top it off he doesn't count as a romance in 3.

Really, unless you romanced Garrus in Mass Effect 2 you are out of luck. Since he is the only femshep romance that carries over.

I liked what they did with Thane. I romanced him in ME2 and I can relate to wanting a little more time with him (in terms of more conversation), or at least some kind of proper romance scene before the Citadel assault -- but his death was definitely epic. The hospital scene with Kolyat was really touching, and it made kicking Kai Leng's ass later in the game all the more satisfying.

The only problem I have with Thane's death was that the highly-skilled, epic assassin charged a guy who had a sword.

When Thane had a pistol.

And Thane tried to punch him with the pistol.

....what?

I found it very moving and well done. A perfect example of "bittersweet".

Amazing how the developers could understand the concept for that moment and totally forget it for the ending

I think Thane was a badass, and had an appropriate end.

met thane only yesterday on my 2nd playthrough, was happy to see him again and IMHO he got enough screentime, good lines and the perfect death for a supporting role from the last game - i especially loved that he didn't die in battle, but that we could say goodbye in a more peacefull setting and that we had time to say goodbye.

rip bro, you weren't alone for long.

People are upset that Thane died? I thought that it was established that his condition was incurable.

At least he went out like a stone cold badass.

Excellent story segment.  I also really enjoyed how Mordin was handled (I'm a huge Mordin fan).  But my favorite scene in perhaps the entire series is Garrus and Shep doing target practice on the Citadel.

As a HUGE Thane fan, I think I can tell what the problem is.

Thane was voted character of the year 2010, was he not?

Just remember, me and many others consider him the best character in ME.

Now, here's where the problem comes in.

ME is a game all about choices. It's about changing the outcomes of things, beating the odds. Doing what you wanna do. Now, I played through Thane's segment and thought it was all fantastically done.

However, the fact that he has an UNAVOIDABLE death is unfair. While him dying was really a great addition to the game, seeing him beating the odds would've been just as great.

But, that's not there.

And that pisses me off.

Agreed wholeheartedly. I was assuming they would do the lame "let's find
a cure for Thane" mission we all thought was coming, and I was
pleasantly surprised they didn't fall back on overly convenient plot
devices (well, in this instance at least... heh).

Loved the Thane scene, really. I think his death was beautiful and I think i will make a Femshep char for ME2 just so i can tragically romance him.
Really, wonderfully done, BW. Kudos.
