IMO, the endings as-is are interesting, it's their execution and lack of closure (plus ending the series on a VERY down note) that are problematic. A bittersweet ending is expected- I don't want an ending where Shepard shoots space-magic all over the galaxy and magically everything the Reapers did is reversed.
First off, for this 'changed ending', I'm going to say that the Normandy doesn't go barreling off to the middle of nowhere. The fate of the Normandy relies solely on the fate of the Earth. When the explosion goes off, the Normandy (due to EDI's destruction, her acquisition of organic materials, or feedback because of Reaper tech and the Control ending) crashes on Earth.
If the Earth is destroyed, the Normandy is destroyed too, and the last scene is Joker crawling away from the wreckage before finally stopping. Depressing, which this ending is supposed to be.
If the Earth is saved, all you see is it crashing, but it lands easily enough and Joker opens the door and climbs out, along with a few crew-members- the implication being that nobody dies.
If the Earth is saved, it cuts away to Admiral Hackett giving a speech on ANN. His speech is that very difficult times are ahead, but they are preferable to extinction, yadda yadda. He acknowledges the allied forces who helped, and the leaders of those forces (Primarch Victus, Wrex, a Quarian Admiral, a Geth (if the Geth were spared), etc.) are with him. He ends optimistically.
At some point in his speech, it cuts away to a memorial flame as he says "we must all remember the heroes that we lost in this war." If Shepard is dead, it clearly says Shepard (first name obscured by leaves). If you have an LI, they're kneeling on the ground, flowers against the memorial, obviously crushed. If Shepard is alive, it instead saids "David Anderson", and the LI is replaced by Kahlee Sanders.
Hackett's speech draws to a close, saying that though dark times are ahead, they will survive.
If Shepard is alive, for the end of the speech, it cuts away to a hospital, where a heavily bandaged Shepard is laying. If you have an LI, they're sitting next to you, head against the wall, obviously asleep, their hand inches from yours- the implication being that before they fell asleep, they were holding your hand. The last thing you see before the credits begin is Shepard's hand moving towards theirs.
Idea for an 'optimistic' epilogue that fits with the existing endings (minus Normandy joyride crash).
