I was pretty indifferent to Vega. I think he suffered as a character from being introduced at the end of the trilogy, and in the shortest of the ME games, where there's little time for side conversations with new squad mates. I'd rather they had spent more time on characters I already knew.
Where is the love for James Vega?

Vega is the funniest character in the series.

Oh and Conrad Verner. Shooting him in the leg was absolutely golden.

I liked "dancing" with him and beating the crap out of each other. That was fun watching my femshep and him walk away from the fight with bloody noses.

It's hidden in the good ending.
Actually, I didn't mind him. He had some good lines, but he just didn't fit. I wanted my old crew, not someone new. Plus, I didn't care for the character design. He looks like an over-inflated blow up doll. Like bump into him too hard and he'll explode in your face.

His biggest flaw was that you only had two or three conversations (not those in-game ping-pong chats) with him on the normandy. I was generally dissapointed with the fact that they didn't bother making cinematics for all conversations, even though it's probably because of the autodialogue.

His problem was the same as Kaidan's and Jacob's, he is neutral in his characterization to be as appealing as possible to new players, he won't be an outright bad guy, but he won't be a boy-scout either.
Still, he was pretty cool, had great personality, and Freddie Prinze Jr. as his voice actor payed-off inmensely in my opinion.
