The one good thing about this whole situation is that I've been reading a lot more. It's been great to get immersed in stories that don't completely unravel in the last 10 minutes.

Do you guys think the announced extended cut will be able to address any of these problems?

Very well said. This gets to the heart of why loyal RPGers love the games they do...and why ME3 failed as a conclusion to an "epic story" trilogy.

I loved the overarching message of ME: that lots of different people being different, but united, is better, because different viewpoints and abilities makes us stronger together. And that is exactly why the ending does not sit well with so many people--it IS the first part of a two-step betrayal of that doctrine and a slap in the face of people who took it to heart. That fact that Shepard, our hero, often with an in-your-face approach to making things work, doesn't even have the opportunity to question this dramatic shift in logic is the second half of that betrayal.

First, the message is reversed, then they pour salt in the wound by altering the central character's own reaction to these events. It's poor storytelling and just plain sad.

Sadly no.

The ending will remain as is.  Being forced to accept RGC's logic is what causes the betrayal of hope and that won't change.

How can it address the problem?

I'm not really sure what to think, honestly. It's hard to see how much they can fix if they're keeping starkid and the terrible choices, but some of the things they've said on twitter sound a lot more complex than "screw you, our ending was brilliant, come see in detail why."

The story was never about hope, it was about a doomed fight against a relatively invincible nemesis.

Excellent post by the OP and I agree 100%.

There is no hope at the end.  Just lesser and greater degrees of suck.

THANK YOU!

You literally said everything I have wanted to say!

Like hell it was. Shepard has constantly been built up as a character who manages to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. At no point throughout ME1 or ME2 did I feel that the galaxy was doomed no matter what we did.

Great read OP,

Did it seem to anyone else that we spent nearly the entire ME3 in a back and forth battle for actual control of our Shepard, whether it was the lack of the speach wheel or the lack of squad mates, or even a face import bug, it just felt like we weren't really trusted with the story like we should have been.

Yeah, I thought about trying to work the agency angle into that post, as I think it's also important (and related), but I felt like it detracted from the core point about storytelling. You make a good point, though.

@yukon fire
I agree with you as well, also my paragon Commander Shepard kept making remarks that I would never let her say, I agree in hindsight I believe this is what Bioware planned and they refuse to listen to us.

I agree with the OP from the bottom of my heart ... that is my personal problem with the ending too and the extended cut has the potential to put it right. To let people rebuild, salvage the reapers to build new mass relays and so on so that not everything is so bleak .. ok it is still bleak as I would have to sacrifice the Geth and EDI ... but ... at least it is a little thing.

Nope not all- The Extended cut will add more crap to the crap, maybe make it shiner.  Bioware  refuses to see or simple refuse to acknowledge that the endings are a very betrayal of the  very nature of story...

They  will keep throwing out "Artistic Ingerity" and "75 critics" till the cows come home... and they can rot in it for all care.

These endings are very betrayal of their "Artistic Ingerity" but   Hudson and Walters are too damn  busy smelling themselves to realize it.

Great post  btw ... you hit everything on hit nice.
