Finished my first run of Awakenings. It was fun pretty fun, but I have 2 complaints.
First, Runecrafting blows. I would much rather just buy the damn runes or find them as loot as in Origins. It was especially bad since I didn't take the skill myself, so I had to go into the Keep to buy materials, then go outside so I could have Oghren craft runes. It got really annoying, so after a few minutes I gave up and never bothered with it again.
Second, the companions. I didn't feel like I got to know any of them, so I really didn't care about their approval ratings. Given that you get exactly 2 warriors, 2 rogues, and 2 mages, and you have the ability to respec anyone at any time, it seems like the only reason you even have companions in Awakenings is so you don't have to solo. Only once choice I made seemed to really matter to any of them, and since I barely knew them anyway I really didn't care how they reacted.
But overall it was pretty fun. I did kind of rush through it and failed to complete some side quests, so I will have to play through again. Not sure if I'll import another character or try it as the generic Orlesian Gray Warden.....
My first play through was with an Orlesian Warden. I have a specific character that I wanted to import, but she's not ready yet. So my Orlesian started at level 18. How crappy is that? You can't even select any of the new fancy skills/talents till level 20. That irritated me, but with all the side quests I still ended up at level 30 anyway.
I agree that runecrafting is really pretty worthless. My only runecrafter was Sigrun and I had to do the same thing. Go inside to buy all the stupid supplies and then come back out to have her make whatever rune I needed. I almost didn't do it, but I wanted to finish all the sidequests and get whatever armor/weaponry Wade would build me. It wasn't bad. The blade he built looked just like Starfang. Which I thought was one of the cooler looking weapons in the game. Save one. The new bow he created. That thing was pretty awesome.
I liked the characters, but you don't really get to know them. Oghren you already know from Origins-duh-and Nathaniel you some what know because of his family. Although thank goodness he doesn't turn out to be like his crum-bum dad. Anders had a pretty good story line. It helped that you met him right at the beginning, so you had the chance to get to him fairly well. For me the level of development fit with the ending of the game. They were just "red shirts" aka expendable. So no point in making an incredibly in-depth character.
I did notice some control problems that I also had in Origins, but the ones in Awakening seemed just a little bit worse. Example: Oghren would get stuck in a fight mode. He would continue to swing even when there were no enemies around him. Oh and the biggest thing that urked me was towards the end with the High Dragon. Skank didn't give up the loot. I was waiting ever so patiently for the rest of the blackblade or blackhand (whatever it's called) leather armor set and the dragon carried it. I waited. Then waited some more. Left the room and came back. Went into the cave or whatever it is and then went back and nope. Nothing. I assume it's just a bug. I had a similar problem in Origins with Ser Otto the first time I tried his quest. After fighting the first demon, I got stuck in the room. I was locked inside. So I ended up going back to a previous save and abadoning Ser Otto. Meh. Now that I have finished the quest, abadoning him is probably the better ending for him. Oh well.
