Got a mod to bash chests open as well.  Yay!  I miss my rogue...trying to make being a warrior fun for me without spening every five minutes with my eye twitching since I can't open a lock.  Why put locked chests at Ostagar?  WHY?

Or in the origin stories for that matter, I'm pretty sure every side-kick you get in the origins is a warrior or a mage meaning unless your PC is a rogue you're SOL on a lot of extra loot (and extra loot can make a big difference that early in the game!)

As for the whole Loghain business, I agree with you the guy comes off as a complete nutjob, my PC has more reason to trust Zevran when recruiting him than Loghain. As a I posted in another thread relating to all that, I think if they had spun the story so Howe was the real sonuva**** behind everything instead of just a psychotic lackey Loghain could have been much more redeemable especially if all the evidence you throw at him during the Landsmeet eroded his self-rightousness and he realized he'd been played the fool and had become more a menace to Ferelden than the Orlesians. But no, instead he's the paranoid nutjob who knowingly caused the entire plot to take place, still don't understand how anyone could recruit him other than for achievement purposes.

I actually feel the same about Alister... I sometimes take him along just to make him witness the most evil of things i can do...

Still i do agree that he is akward to such a dagree that its sometimes  fun...:P

I rather like Loghain. I myself wouldn't belive the grey wardens in his place... Just on faith. And the 4 legions of chevaliers on my borders would be alarming to me also.

EDIT: Great thread btw. Have been stalking here for days just laughing my lovely butt off. Keep it up ^^

Yeah, I just played a whole game ignoring Alistair on purpose, I was even happy to have him **** at me at the end.

I'm about to embark on a female dwarven commoner playthrough.  I'm afraid Alistair is going to be forced to witness a lot of...bad things.

It's a shame I'm not a blood mage to take that deal.  And I'm not going to do the reaver thing.  But I'm going to do every "evil" ally and take every possible intimidation chance.  I do know that pisses him off starting in Lothering.

"Oh, very nice, you're going to have no trouble getting allies wherever you go."

So now it's just going to have to be making Alistair doing stuff he doesn't want to do and having him thank me fore it.  I'd feel sorry for him, but he WAS a dick in the last game, sooo...it gets easier.

Thank you for your support!

Recidiva, I have to completely agree with your ideas on Loghain. I was wondering the same thing myself. Why did he chose the battle between the darkspawn as the time to go crazy? And why did he refuse to ask for help? I understand why he wouldn't trust the Orlesians, ok, I buy that, but what about everyone else? It's like he's on a suicide mission. He a dug a freakin' huge hole and refusing to admit he did so, kept right on digging.

Seallyn, David Gaider wrote two prequel novels. First one is The Stolen Throne, it involves the Orlesian occupation of Ferelden and introduces Maric, Loghain, and Rowan. Shale is actually in the book too but she doesn't talk at all.

The second book is The Calling, has a lot of Grey Warden lore, and is mostly about Duncan, about twenty years prior to the game. If you are a dog person you will cry during part of it, just fyi.

They aren't the best books ever written but they are far, far above average for a game novel, and are both quick reads. I suggest looking into them, if not buying them. I've read them several times over and still enjoy it, but then I have been waiting for DA for five years and soak up every little snippet of information possible.

For some reason my dwarf has a southern accent.

"Aw, now honey, don't you worry about that none." *stabbing commences* "Now I am just plumb tuckered from all that exertion."

I do wish I could take Leske with me for the whole trip.

Oh, totally. Both dwarf origins give you an awesome wingman, makes me sad we can't keep them.

And dwarf commoners do kind of have a homicidal hillbilly vibe, now that you mention it. Huh. /Alistair voice on/ Creepy.

My character setup reminds me a lot of the Sheriff in "American Gothic" - that's good bad guy.  "Conscience is just the fear of getting caught."

And his female counterpart, the schoolteacher, Ms. Coombs.  "If you're gonna scream you may as well come into the bedroom."

So she slid right into the "Aw shucks" menace.  Big, tall, strong Alistair will simply not be able to argue with poor, weak, helpless, wilting flower, probably tearing up and voice choking at the horrors I've been forced to witness and do on behalf of the Grey Wardens...me.

*at Ostagar*

Alistair: You'll understand about the joining if you s-

Me: Well, now, that right there. Were you about to say...survive?

Alistair: No, no...I'm sure I wasn't.

Me: Now you wouldn't lie to little old me, would you? Just because I'm a dwarf? You wouldn't do that...would you? I just don't think I could bear it if you did.

Alistair: I'm sorry...oh, how...no, it's not...oh.

Me: *lip tremble* I don't want to die. I'm so far away from home and...please...

Alistair: *looks both ways* Yes. I'm sorry, now don't...Ah. Crying. The chantry doesn't cover this, do they. I only know how to kill people in distress, not...

Me: *dabs at tears*

Alistair: It wasn't survive! It wasn't...it was...

Me: Yes?

Alistair: All right. It was survive. You won't tell?

Me: Of course not. I'll...I'll be brave. You did right to tell me the truth. I think honesty is best, don't you?

Alistair: Sure...sure I do.

Me: I know we're going to get along like a thaig on fire. I can just tell. Would you carry my maul for me?

Alistair: Of...of course. It's taller than you are.

Me: I know, and I'm such a bitty thing. I've always relied upon the kindness of strangers.

Alistair: This is a rather heavy maul also.

Me: I just adore Grey Wardens. Such interesting people. You and Duncan are both just so inspiring. I'm so grateful to be able to learn from the best.

Alistair: Well, Duncan is rather amazing.

Me: You must tell me everything about him. He seems so fierce!

Hahaha. I totally wish the PC could burst into tears, Alistair wouldn't be able to handle it. It'd kind of work, anyway. Especially romancin' him.

PC: A-alistair?

Alistair: Yes, my lovely little Warden?

PC: *sobs in front of him uncontrollably*

Alistair: Uh. Oh Maker. Uh. Uh. It's.. it's okay? Don't cry? I wasn't that bad last night, was I?

PC: *still cries*

Alistair: I'm sorry! It was my first time, I had no idea-- R-really I didn't-- p-please stop crying!

I enjoy torturing Alistair far too much. Simple pleasures, and all that.

And it's no problem, Seallyn. Happy to spread the DA lurve. :3

*our heroine sends a message to a prominent forger in Orzammar with a few sovereigns and a sample of handwriting. Upon picking up her package, she dirties it up a bit and hides it out of sight after splashing it with some blood. Upon playing a convenient game of catch with Dog near Flemeth's Hut...*

Me: Dog! Did you find something?

Dog: *lopes away and back with A Bloody Journal*

Me: My goodness, what is this? Good boy, Dog!

Alistair: What is it?

Me: I don't know, I have trouble reading some of the human words. What do you thiink it is, Alistair?

Alistair: It's...Maker's Breath. It's a journal. It's Duncan's journal.

Me: It can't be! Here?

Alistair: This...this is amazing. How could this be?

Me: I don't know. It doesn't seem possible, does it?

Alistair: We fled so quickly from Ostagar...I have so little of Duncan's...

Me: I know, I know. It's heartbreaking. Here. You should have this. He was like a father to you.

Alistair: Would you? That's...that's so generous. I don't know how to thank you.

Me: Of course. I'm sure I couldn't make sense of it.

Alistair: Thank you. So much. This is...I can't believe my good fortune.

Me: You go on now. You make your peace with the loss of Duncan. I'll be here for you.

Alistair: *stumbles off in a daze, turning pages*

*later*

Alistair: You won't believe this. What an amazing find.

Me: What, what did it say?

Alistair: It says that the treaty for the service of mages has always met with betrayal. He makes a claim that more Grey Wardens died to magical treachery than to the darkspawn themselves!

Me: No! And we were going to go to the Circle! What if we'd walked straight into a trap!

Alistair: Duncan was considering telling us, but didn't wish to dash our hopes. He wanted us to have faith in the goodness of the world, though he doubted it greatly himself. Such a wise man.

Me: We lost so much...when we lost his guidance and counsel.

Alistair: It's a good thing we have this as our guide. We must do whatever we can to avoid being betrayed by the mages. We must put our faith in the Templars. That was what Duncan feared he must do himself. Despite all opposition.

Me: You're so wise. If you are an example of what Templars are, I'm sure Duncan could only be right.

Alistair: Thank Duncan, not me.

Me: Thank you. Duncan.

I'd replace the last line with:
PC: The maker told me to do it in a dream.

See how she takes that :innocent:

But you gotta admit, it would lead to a great conversation, asking her why it is okay for her to have dreams from the Maker, but not us.

It'd be about the best thing this side of telling Alistair "Duncan is still alive!" and then, when he asks "really?" telling him, "No."

Yes, that's the trick. Not telling someone the maker told you, but make her believe the maker told her.

Since Duncan is pretty much Alistair's Maker, it's easier to come up with a Journal than a whole new undiscovered Chant that mentions us personally.

But I suppose if Lel were the target I could dig some scroll out of the Temple...but she's not coming with us this time, so I'm not worried. I think I'll probably end up with Alistair, Oghren, Dog and Sten.

On the "mages" tack, Morrigan gets turned in to Gregoir and Wynne gets killed. Zev gets shivved in his unconscious state and Leliana is never going to make it beyond Lothering.

Yay easy mode!

That's like the Landsmeet option to say "HAH!  You lose."  to Loghain.

Worth a laugh.  But not...crafted very well...but..still...worth a laugh.

*in camp*

*our heroine waits until Morrigan is bathing in her tent and steals all of Morrigan's equipment and clothing, gives it to Dog (Thaiger) and waits*

Morrigan: *from her tent* Hello? This isn't funny?

Me: What is it?

Morrigan: My clothing. All of it. And jewelry. Everything. Gone.

Me: No! That can't be!

Morrigan: Would you mind...seeing what happened to my belongings? I'm a bit...indisposed.

Me: *returns a few shreds of robe, slobbered feathers, staff chewed to splinters* I'm...I'm so sorry, Thaiger...I think he likes you and...

Morrigan: Your...DOG...is the most wretched...now what am I to do?

Me: I have some...commoner clothing. You could wear that.

Morrigan: This is insupportable. I have no weapon, I have no defense! I'm...and now I'm frumpy. Are these patches?

Me: I think they look lovely.

Morrigan: *grits her teeth* If I even see...that dog...again...

Me: No! Not Thaiger! It's not his fault! Please, don't hurt him!

Morrigan: He's shriek chow. As soon as I...am presentable.

Me: *starts to cry* *runs to Alistair*

Alistair: What is it?

Me: Morrigan. She's crazy! She threatend Dog's life!

Alistair: Mages. It's as I feared. We should ask her to leave.

Me: But that won't stop her! She'll return, she'll kill my dog, she vowed!

Alistair: Well. Perhaps we should go to the circle to ask for advice on apostates. Just ask.

Me: I'd feel so much better if someone else told me what to do.

Alistair: We'll do that then.

Me: I feel better already.

*In Honnleath*

*standing in front of Shale*

Me: You know, I think that maybe taking this golem along with us isn't such a good idea.

Alistair: I think so too. It's awfully...big.

Me: And it killed its master! I'm certain a working golem is a very good thing.

Alistair: They did guard the Dwarven Empire for a very long time.

Me: It's a lot to think about. Golems are good. But insane golems that kill their masters are not good. I must choose wisely.

Alistair: Perhaps if we think on it.

Me: Yes. Let's leave this golem here. I know! Let's at least make it comfortable. *our heroine spreads birdseed all around Shale, stuffing some in her upturned mouth. Also pulling a scarf from her pocket and wrapping it around her eyes.* There! Now it'll have birdsong for company and won't get any sun damage to its eyes. "You be happy, now, golem, nobody's ever going to bother you again! I have the rod and we promise we won't tell anybody the code words. Ever. Your secret is safe with us."

Alistiar: You're too tender hearted.

Me: *bright smile* C'mon Thaiger, you want a new stick? Let's play! *our heroine throws the control Rod to Thaiger, who commences decimating it*

Instead of "No" I would go with "In our hearts." Perfect setup line for Alistair to go on a tirade.
