Good grief, 5 pages of posts in a day? Really? Really?!?! *grumbles about reading it*

Going back to Alistair's love issues, oh, about, 14 hours ago and 3 or 4 pages, ><, I never romanced him on either of my two playthroughs (Morrigan then Leliana). I wanted to, but I just can't wade through all the fighting and questing and whatnot to actually go through his romance (I'm like your daughter, recidiva, verrrrrry thorough, even on multiple playthroughs juuuust in case I missed a tiny detail, I got the sidetracked achievement first time and wasn't particularly trying).

Anyhow, it's rather enlightening to read about how Alistair's romance is so...passionate should I say?...until a hard decision comes along and he apparently breaks all you girls' hearts. But only enlightening when taken in contrast to Morrigan's romance. If you've played hers through, she really seems torn between your pc and her duty by the end (maybe I'm being too sympathetic, but I take the skywalker route of believing there's a good soul inside, despite the miserable person she seems to be). What's more, she evolves as a character to a point where she will at least think about your opinion and reasoning, a bit like Sten. Now take it as a direct contrast to Alistair who appears to have no qualms for choosing duty over love.

Who is the better person now, from an emotional viewpoint? (which is the viewpoint most people seem to be taking in this thread, as opposed to logical)

Oh, and on my first playthrough (romanced Morrigan and took the bargain) I was almost completely dry-eyed throughout the game. It wasn't a great ending, but everyone in my camp was alive, loghain dead, anora locked up, Alistair a good king, and the hope that my pc could find Morrigan, eventually, still burning. (I definitely cried at the end of cowboy bebop, so I don't think I'm particularly insensitive)

Finally, I just read The Hedge Knight by George Martin and was taken aback at how much more developed and satisfying and involving that short story was, that took me maybe 3 hours to read, than the entirety of a single playthrough of Dragon Age was. Methinks the Bioware writers need to take a few more classes before trying to release a story driven mmo like SWTOR.

Me: Well, Bro, it's come down to this. Go on, do your thing.

Alistair: Wait, what? Why me?

Me: Because Riordan suffered death by stupid. You're next in line.

Alistair: What was the point of engaging me to Anora and proclaiming me king if you were just going to off me like this?

Me: Dunno. Seemed like a good idea at the time. It was fun watching you squirm. Good speech though, Five out of Five. Really, I mean it.

Alistair: I have a nation to lead!

Me: Oh come on! You've been my whiny little **** boy for the last 40 hours of gameplay, and NOW you want to have a backbone? Do it.

Alistair: You've never sentenced me to certain death before!

Me: It's you or me. There can be only one. Now, do it! (shoves Alistair, only to have him trip and fall off the edge of the castle.) Al? You okay, bro? Broooooo? Oh, GOD DAMMIT! >_<

Ha!  That's what Alistair gets for being a douche.  Except for the part where now YOU have to sacrifice yourself.  Although that would so probably happen.

Alistair: I'm going to kill the arch demon.

me: Dude, just do it, u gotta lose ur v card sometime, why not with a hot seductress.
Alistair: I can't.... i just cant bring my self to sleep with an ambomination, no matter what the reward.
me: (Persuade) There are worse things then losing your virginity to Morrigan.
Alistair: I.. Can't believe im saying this.. but maybe ur right.
me: I am Alistair, now come on, man up and go take one for the team.

Morrigans room

Morrigan: now sit tight Alistair, this will be over shortly. *as she prcoceeds to tie him to the bed post and cover his eyes with a blind fold.*
Alistair: i dont think im gonna like this ritual  a whole lot.
Morrigan: Now now.. just sit tight while i go get mothers grimoire.

Exit Morrigan, Zevran releases stealth mode, grinning in assless Leather chaps.

Zevran:{whispers} sneaky sneaky

15 minutes later Zevran exiting Morrigans room.

me: Nice chaps
Zevran: You had your chance
me: {curiously entering the room} Umm... did i miss something.
Alistair: Is it over.... it wasn't... It wasn;t that bad.
me: yeah. umm.. remember when i told you there were worse things then sleeping with Morrigan.

She does love to teach, and for her that could be her true love, I guess, nothing wrong with that.  And you're right she does change her mind.  I just really did not expect it, but that makes a good game, right, having the unexpected happen.

Yeah, I didn't expect it either and I really liked that. IDK, maybe it's because she doesn't have long to live or she's just so used to being in the tower and being a mentor that she says that. I think she wanted you to stay the course and focus on what is going on around you. And sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes people can get so wrapped up in their love lives and not on what is going on right in front of them. (shrugs) Or maybe I'm just baised, I really love Wynne so...

On Wynne, I understand why she slams the PC for being in a relationship, that doesn't mean any PC of mine takes kindly to such assertions. And she does apologize later, however I feel that Wynne as a character is a fair bit more jaded or limited than she leads on. Her mentor advice of staying the course and taking joy in your duty is all fine and well, especially given that the PC has unavoidable and life-threatening duties to fulfill.

Still I feel like her, "find joy in what you have to do" advice is one born of years of having her will broken over the knee of the chantry. I think deep down she is in fact a bit jaded and perhaps jealous of those outside the circle who can live their lives as they choose. Mages are given next to no true free will, they can't leave the tower unless under direct supervision from the chantry, they are watched literally all the time,  they aren't allowed to have children (and likely aren't allowed to marry either), and the penalties for not adhering to these rules is death or a different kind of death in being made tranquil. Wynne states herself how unhappy she was growing up in the tower, she also mentioned that her son was taken from her by the chantry. Accepting or not having your own child taken from you would have a serious effect on anyone, I think she displaced her gaping loss onto the apprentice mages, she would be a mother figure for them since she couldn't be the mother she wanted to be. And for her part she ended up being a relatively happy and kind-hearted person, however her story is one of loss and crushed dreams not of happy service to the circle and finding herself.

Incidentally I find the theme of, "being forced into roles" to be common in this game. Wynne and the circle mages being one example, your PC and being forced to become a Grey Warden, Alistair being forced to become king, Zevran being forced to become a Crow, and several others that are escaping me atm. Point is it seems to be a reoccurring theme, being forced to be happy where you are because you can't change the path you're on.

ETA: Also I wanted to add that I felt that our PC's were supposed to be younger? Like, in their early twenties? Because it just felt like I was supposed to be younger and more naive. Which is weird for me because I play a late 20's to early 30's character. At least in my mind. I guess I do that because I'm around that age...
Um, yeah so now I'm just rambling - *waves hand* these are not the droids you are looking for!

Yes this does seem about right, by all accounts the PC should be in their 20's. The Dwarf Commoner is the younger brother/sister to Rica, the Human Noble is the youngest Cousland, Jowan is considered old for an apprentice mage and has been there longer than the PC, the Dwarf Noble is younger than Trian (who appears to be in his early to mid 30's), the city elf...well just look at the rest of the wedding party, the dalish elf is referred to as "da'len" (child) by many in the clan.

*AT CAMP*

Alistair: Do you know what this is?

Me:
Aw, crap. No, don't give that to me.

Alistair:
It's a ro--huh? Why?

Me:
Because I forgot to save before entering camp, that's why.

Alistair:
Save? Save who?

Me:
Never mind. Can you just hold that thought until the next time we camp? I'll remember to save.

Alistair:
You're acting very strangely.

Me:
Honey, I just like your dialogue so much, I want to experience all of it.

Alistair:
...that sounds rather, uh, lamp-post related.

Me:
Kind of. Look. Hold onto that, okay? I'll take it next time, honest.

Alistair:
Perhaps it was a silly impulse.

Me:
No, no! It's a great impulse. I just want to be able to talk to you over and over again.

Alistair:
You actually...like listening to me? Wow. I mean, really. Wow. I'm used to people not listening.

Me:
If you only knew. Now, can we talk about lamp-posts again?

I don't think that good or bad are absolute values.  I judge people on their actions.  It's what they do.  For me personally that means I'm an inherently excellent liar and manipulator.  BUT...I also have a conscience and I attempt to keep it alive rather than throttling it to death and weakening its voice.  Morrigan's conscience is dead.  Flemeth killed it or she killed it and she's not going to revive it, as she considers conscience and attachment to others to be weakness.  That's clear.

Morrigan is a liar and a manipulator and she's just not that good at it.  Everyone knows she's a liar and a manipulator within a few conversation choices of meeting her.  My first character left her in camp the entire time and didn't even attempt to listen to her offer.  I still tried to talk to her and she even liked me a lot, but having her "out in the world" and dealing with her disapproval of not drowning kittens...that's how I read her.  Immature and conscienceless.  Powerful, at least in game terms.  But most of the stuff she says is flat out wrong if you try to really use it on anybody other than the least evolved and most stupid.

I think Morrigan is written very well and is an uncompromised character.  What you see is what you get.  Dead conscience and the PC is the only person who might have made Morrigan consider even for a moment, reviving and entertaining the idea of conscience and love.  She's well portrayed as someone troubled by that struggle, even if it's a brief struggle.  I get it, I get her, she's well done.

I think she's a better conceived and executed character ultimately than Alistair.

Alas, she's not that much fun in terms of being emotionally involved.

In the end, it is a game, and fun does count.

Oh, thank you so much!

And thanks to everyone here for giving me a place to park and discuss all this stuff.  You've saved the patience of everyone around me.  And also I didn't have to spoil the game for everyone I know just so's they'd talk to me about it.

Truer words haven't been spoken.

Shame that after my bazillionth playthrough I'm getting more and more frustrated with either the characters and how utterly brainless they are, or minor things like getting stuck here and there  (stairs come to mind).

Sadly, the game is just not fun for me. Not anymore. I'll probably pick it up again down the road somewhere, just that now I  would rather hit the NPC's with a big hammer to smack some sense into them rather than trying to immerse myself in the story.

As I'm a complete nerd and must have the achievements, I  just don't see myself siding with the "bad guys" mainly because they aren't so much evil as they are mentally insane  (cough)Loghain(cough).

"I want you to ****** in the Ashes!"
"Why?"
"... because it's fun!"
/facepalm

"Hai dere. We haev werewolve problem!  Hlep, plaese?"
/facepalm

"Damn those Orlesians!"
"Uh, there aren't any Orlesians here, just a whole bunch of darkspawn."
"Damn those Orlesian Darkspawn!"
/facepalm

I  mean, really. It's like they all stand aroudn with the thumbs up their bums waiting for the problem to solve itself.

Rarely have I  played a game where you come to a place and you get the info that:  "Okay. We have a bit of a problem. We've done  X to prevent Y from happening. It's been working so and so, but now Z  has come into the equation and we don't have enough resources to deal with it. Can you help?  We'll hold  Y off as long as we can."

Instead it's "hlep!  Tehy are attacking! Whut to do?"

/end angry rant.

SPIKE.

Loyal.  Minimal brooding.  Better comedy options.

Did I mention the lack of brooding?

Much better grip on the concept of love.

Yeah, I have to admit, I do prefer Spike to Angel, IRL. But see, the thing is, Spike in BTVS made you laugh, this time, Angel has the sense of humor. *bummed* (Anyone ever see the Season 8 comic where Buffy's imagining being with them both? Or her comment in Season 7 to Spike, "The two of you just need to fight out your differences. Shirtless. Maybe with oil..." )

The rose conversation came up last night and I picked all the snarky options at my husband. And somehow got more approval than being nice got me. Al's an odd duck. I also LMAO'ed.

Yeah, Al's a bit of a masochist.

See, I'm a funny person, but I don't really use the funny to cover up insecurities.  I use them to make my conversation more interesting.  Too serious to me...indicates a person who takes themselves too seriously and probably isn't paying much attention to the world in general and is stuck inside their own head all the time.

I consider certain types of humor to be a sign of maturity.

I think I just got baited and switched because David Gaider is just a much more mature person and didn't want to give Al the lines he deserved because he just had all this great stuff in his head that could be used.

So you're romanced by one person and then given game plot by another.

In essence, you're romanced by Spike and given game plot options by Angel.

It's hard to make the two guys agree on anything.

Yeah, but I don't need a fight.  David Gaider's romance options win hands down over Alistair's plot options.

Spike kicks Angel's broody butt fangs down.

I'm loyal too.  I don't need attention drawn away.  I know what I like.

Just oil up one of 'em, thanks.  Or talk to me.  Even better.

I agree.

*sigh*

Death is lighter than a feather, duty heavier than a mountain.
