Speaking of which, this was updated about week ago or so if you have the earlier version. Nothing drastic, just fixed some errors in how the characters are positioned so the punch lands better.

I had quite a laundry list of complaints when I first played Mass Effect:Anyway.....
- Excessively long elevator rides. Seriously, these are boring in real life. Why would I want to experience them in game? Happily, there was a rapid transit system in most areas to help avoid this problem. The Citadel Tower and docking bay elevators were still annoying, though.
- The Mako controls seemed waaaay to sensitive. I'd try to turn slightly, and the damn thing would pull a 180 on me. Thankfully, with practice I was finally able to master it.
- Planetary exploration. Most planets, we can't land on. Instead we "scan" them and get to look at a picture with some captions. When we can land, we're given a very small rectangular space, like a sandbox, to play in. Try to go beyond the box's borders, and Joker will tell you that you can't go beyond the mission parameters. Excuse me, who's in command here? And of course, the combination of extremely difficult terrain and ultra sensitive controls on Mako provided me hours of hair pulling frustration. Eventually, I just said "**** it. I'm going straight to the objectives and ignoring anything else that might be out here." I was much happier that way.
- Squad AI. You team mates in Mass Effect are brain dead. All of them. Let them use their special abilities, and they will. Quite often they'll use every single special ability in their repetoire within the first 10 second of battle - and all on a single target. Leaving you with no support at all if you actually need it. Thankfully, I never did. I ended up using my companions as fodder. Distractions for the enemy while I blew everything up. This was especially true when playing on the "Insane" difficulty with a fresh, level 1 character.
I tend to play these types of games the same way you do. If possible, I'll set up the script/AI I want my party memebers to use, then either charge in or set up an ambush and let everybody else do their thing while I control my character. I only take direct control of party members when their AI fails or I need to interrupt what they're doing to make them do something else, like getting Wynne to cast Group Heal after we've been hit by a fireball or something.
There is one thing I would have liked to have in Dragon Age that was present in the Baldur's Gate series: The ability to toggle the entire party's AI on or off with the press of a button. I believe it was the "a" key in BG2 taht did this. It was great. I could have them all use their AI for standard combat, then instantly disable all party AI and take direct control of everybody for a boss fight, or make them all stop doing something stupid when their AI was not so intelligent.
I also miss spell triggers and the "defend this area" command.

Sure, Anora's happy, I suppose, but she screws over so many people it's like a perpetual disaster machine. "Gosh, I wonder how they got a food shortage!"

I hate Anora sooo much. If only I could get her killed too. But all Alistair does is lock her up in a tower in the best of circumstances. Not good enough!

I think I told another user I probably am more like Anora than I want to admit. I think if I was in that position I would have screwed over everyone to get the throne. Granted I would have been nicer about it.

I'm not a fan of fame and power. Gets in the way of me just doing what I want to do. I doubt I'd be allowed to hang out and play video games if I were the leader of a nation. The only reason I'd ever accept it is if I thought I could do some actual good to offset the inconvenience of being in a gilded cage solving everyone else's problems.
I have zero tolerance for someone holding onto power just so they can abuse it and play dress up. I have no admiration for Anora at all, just contempt.
I know exactly why Alistair doesn't want to be King. I wouldn't want to be either, but I'd surely see that I was a better prospect for the country than leaving Anora in charge of it. And I'd feel like I had to, especially the state Ferelden is in.

I can't NOT make him King if I'm a good character. Just because of my convictions about Anora and how he's a good king if he's hardened. I've even married him to Anora and Ferelden comes out best in the end.
I've never taken the ending where we go off together. Even when I took Morrigan's deal, he was King and I was chancellor.
I don't care about the Grey Wardens. I do care about the people of Ferelden not being subjected to worse horror than the Darkspawn. (i.e. Anora)
And I've only finished once as evil and I'm not doing THAT again. Eeew.

I'm sorry. Should I stop talking now? I don't really want to. You should put me on ignore. Now I'm sad.
I'm sure a lot of what I say is bad ideas! Does that help? I hope? Awwww.
Oh yeah. That mod is awesome. Sometimes you destroy what's in the chests, but that's okay. They're OPEN, dammit.
There's also an autoloot mod that's good. It doesn't loot corpses automatically, but it does make the running around much easier as it'll loot from a further distance, and if there are items in chests or barrels, it sends party members out to collect them.
Kerridan Kaiba wrote...
Oh snap. I like that too. That's how I ended up missing the Arcane Warrior only weapons. Not seeing bodies that were there.

She's talking about herself. Blue chick's alien species is all chicks. Well, they evolved beyond man parts and female parts. Or whatever. So, y'know, go ahead and roll a female, won't change her attitude toward you one bit. Just means you get Kaiden for competing love interest instead.
Yeah, romance aspect is freakin shallow by DA:O standards. Just talk to them after every mission, go ahead and be a dick. Won't matter at all, I think. As long as you don't flat out shut them down, you're in. Too bad real life doesn't work like that.
I'm wondering if one of your teammates won't shoot you in the back if you do a bad job as leader in Mass Effect 2.
Evolved beyond sex? Shoot me now. Poor blue chick.
sagevallant wrote...
Well, not completely, the society would die out. It's more like "hyper sex" since they're all a bunch of psychics or some junk. Sex that doesn't require man parts and girl parts. So yeah, like I said, she'll be all about getting in your pants whether you roll dude or chick.

I think their sex works like it did with Kiff from Futurama, but don't quote me.

I'm afraid now I'm going to associate Mass Effect sex with Slurm.
I'm not sure if that makes me like the game more or not...
But thank you for lowering my expectations. My new video card makes everybody prettier and move faster and I am going to power through this baby.
sagevallant wrote...
It's only low expectations to where we are today. Back in the day, it was by far the most involved game. It's just that now we're spoiled by always having very intricate backstories for our party members, and elaborate conversations, and so on, and so on...
I'm reacquiring a copy of KoToR as we speak. I lost a lot of comp games when me and this old gf broke up. I was a console gamer back then, and didn't have a comp to run this stuff on myself. Will never understand why she let me rip hers open and install RAM, graphics card, etc. Could very easily have broken the dumb thing. So, yeah... I lost Kotor, Diablo 2, Neverwinter Nights (>_<)... bleh.
Sigh. I was an Aribeth fanboy >.>
Recidiva wrote...
I think KOTOR was more involving. I LOVE that game. Never had a problem wtih game mechanics and loved the interactions.
That was definitely a loss. I think we have two copies of KOTOR because husband and I both got addicted at the same time. I think I'm the only one that's finished it a few times though.
I am going to have to check out Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights too...but so far I don't know where to get it. I'm at a loss when Direct2Drive doesn't have it.
I just got in my first ME elevator and half of my responses are overly heated accusations. I'm missing the humor, big time. I might not make it...trying...to...hang...on... But I've already bought ME2 on faith! Stick with it! I'd still rather be playing KOTOR, which is an older game but not as...clunky to my mind. I never got permanently lost wandering steel hallways unable to find where I was supposed to be in that one.
But also not having a map is kicking my ass. A little circle with an arrow doesn't help me when I have no freaking clue where I should be, the Journal is not helping...
My sense of direction is...well, it's negative. My husband says if I didn't have my GPS, he'd find me stuck between the driveway and the front of the house, unable to find my way to the front door. He's not far off. Endless silver ramps are kicking my ass. And I don't think I can do that elevator again.

NWN was great, sidekicks didn't need to be babysat at all that I remember. NWN2 / BG took a bit more babysitting, pretty slow for my tastes. NWN 2 really should've just been labeled Baldur's Gate X, imho. I liked that the original NWN played a little more like Diablo... and again, for its time, NWN had some pretty decent character interactions.
If you liked Kotor, does that mean you're excited at the prospect of kotor online? >.>
Best Buy near me has NWN2 and one of the expansions on the shelves. Also NWN Diamond (NWN + All Expacs). But when I actually want a new and exciting game, it's lacking... I should start shopping Gamestop. There are actually TWO of them less than 5 miles from me. And less than 1 mile from each other, I might add. One's in the mall, the other's in the surrounding strip malls. It's like the Starbucks of video game stores!
