Are the sales figures up anywhere for DAO yet? I hope it busted down some doors.

Considering I saw it for as cheap as $34.99 I'd say it did quite well.

I am guessing he is talking about how it was used as a black friday lure to get people into the store. That use suggests it was a popular item that woudl draw peopel in on Friday to a store to shop

More likely its not selling well and they are trying to move more copies.

VGchartz has it at about 900,000 copies sold accross the 360/PS3 platforms. No numbers on PC sales though, but you would imagine it's managed to shift 100,000 copies by now. 1 million copies in a month isn't too shaby.

It should be known though that VGchartz aren't that reliable.

I imagine most game sales come in the first month or 2. In which case DA would be average and certainly not the blockbuster it was hyped to be.

The PC number will match or beat the 360/PS3 total.

I doubt it since the 360 and and ps3 are far more popular than the PC as a gaming platform.

The PC market has shifted towards MMOs and casual games like The Sims as well.

I would say sales are considered good. Not everything sells like MF2 or Wii sports.

Man, you do not know how retail works.

In off-seasons, you see a bit of that.  Rush times, everything's geared to getting people in the doors as much as possible, meaning your sales are designed to be attractive - you place things people want to buy on sale.

Mind you, some sales also come direct from a vendor, but that's a different story.

Ah, can you name some other traditional RPGs that have sold more than, say, 1.5million copies? Not action games like Diablo, RPGs.

There's Final Fantasy and Dragonquest which are big sellers in the east/west along with The elder scroll(I'll admit it's mostly action rpg gameplay).

So it's mostly jrpgs and Bioware who can sell traditional rpgs over 2 million copies.

That being said,I don't think Dragon age is selling very well. It's on a discount sale in canada along with a commercial bomb like Brutal legend and NHL 10 which is already 2 months old.Left for dead 2 is also on discount, but Modern warfare 2 or Assasin creed 2 are at their usual price.Dragon age and LFD 2 are on discount because they aren't selling as well as anticipated.

Or because we're starting into our holiday rush up here as well.

Here are the steam stats for some of the top games today... second number is peak players this day (it is nearly the end of the day, so that is fairly high). Note that this is steam, so it does not display the entire market, but these are the only numbers I can find.

Current Players Peak Today Game

32,681 102,968 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer
21,911 35,483 Left 4 Dead 2
19,032 89,361 Counter-Strike: Source
15,057 72,317 Counter-Strike
10,512 16,436 Team Fortress 2
8,350 11,029 Dragon Age: Origins
Source: http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

Considering every game on that list is a shooter aside from Dragon Age, I'm not sure what to make of it. Dragon Age is getting beaten out by 6+ year old Counter-Strike and 5 year old CS:S, so that can't be something to brag of, different genre or not.

Top 6? That's quite good - especially since that's DA:O's steam players only, whereas that's every player for Counterstirke, L4D2, and TF2.

Not necessarily. Oh, by far the fastest sales come in the first month. But many games sell more than half their copies after that month.

Uh, you can't interpret the steam stats like that. Those arent SALES figures, they're how many people are currently playing the game while logged in to steam. You know what DAO doesn't have in common with those other games? It's not multiplayer while all of the others are primarily multiplayer.

You don't know how retail works if you think they would nearly cut the price of a new game in half if they didn't have to.

It's also all of those other games steam sales only... so scratch that "especially since..." part.

They do it for one day only to pick up some sales from impulse buyers... Some of the biggest movies and games of the year are on sale at the beginning of the Holiday season, not because "they have to" be, but because it gets customers in the door.

Except that as far as PC players go, games like Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2 HAVE to be played on Steam, even the brick and mortar sales.  Those stats are the number of people playing on Steam concurrently, which would include ALL people playing Left 4 Dead 2 on PC, but not all people playing DA:O on PC.

What's easier to cut?  The laptop with a margin that might be as low as NEGATIVE 11%, or the game that you pull a decent margin off of?

They'll gladly take minor losses to bring people in, as evidenced by the minor losses they take on some higher ticket, attractive product.  This principle gets extended this time of year to things like games, as well, hence you'll see discounts on some higher-draw titles.

The net result is often more money spent in total anyways, which is why they do it.
