What's easier to cut?  The laptop with a margin that might be as low as NEGATIVE 11%, or the game that you pull a decent margin off of?

They'll gladly take minor losses to bring people in, as evidenced by the minor losses they take on some higher ticket, attractive product.  This principle gets extended this time of year to things like games, as well, hence you'll see discounts on some higher-draw titles.

The net result is often more money spent in total anyways, which is why they do it.

Did we see the same price cut in MW2? Cutting MW2 price in half would definitely bring in more people than DA.

So...did DA:O tank or not?

It definitely didn't tank, that much I can say.

I think the PC is gonna be it's biggest sales source, though, and you don't get much by the way of measurements there, although the 3 different versions of it DID top the digital download sales charts for the first week, which is pretty big.

Of course it didnt tank. There was over a million in sales of DLC for just the console market. It is pretty naive to think that DA would not go on sale, along with just about everything else, for the biggest holiday shopping weekend in the US. DA has sold quite well. RPGs are a much smaller market than FPS games of of course it isnt going to post numbers like MW2.

At very least I know it's part of some bundles with some nice discounts.

A lot of love to BioWare and congrats for the sales. As an old rpgamer it warms my heart to see some of the old glories preserved like this.

Considering every game on that list is a shooter aside from Dragon Age, I'm not sure what to make of it. Dragon Age is getting beaten out by 6+ year old Counter-Strike and 5 year old CS:S, so that can't be something to brag of, different genre or not.

Counter-Strike is over 10 years old and has held the top of most multiplayer boards across the world.

It's not wonder it'd beat Dragon Age, considering Dragon Age is merely an RPG.

Merely an RPG? What, is an RPG a lesser lifeform or something? RPGs have the largest playerbase globally, FYI, just something to keep in mind. I'm a huge fan of shooters, but calling a game "merely an [insert genre here] is stupid.

Anyone have statistics on PC sales?

Nobody ever has statistics on PC sales unless the publisher specifically announces it. The fact that digital download stores are making up an ever growing piece of the pie and don't discuss statistics is just exacerbating the problem.

And this is more ancedotal evidence but someone from EA was on a 1UP podcast the week it came out and said that EA was very pleased with the preliminary numbers.

He's not saying it isn't worthy because of the genre.  He's just saying a traditional RPG is obviously not going to have the sales potential of an FPS as it's a smaller genre.  Especially one that had a PC-focus.

Also, remember this is a new IP, and new franchises rarely sell as well as sequels.

my one fear now that the all powerful EA has shoe horned their way into this, is they push and push to try and get the Halo/MW2 crowd into playing these types of titles. Even the ad campaign was very "rock and roll"... trying to make it more appealing. Which is fine, but making it multi-platform, perhaps changed the way BioWare appoached the development instead of keeping it PC only like traditinal RPG's.

In the UK MW2 was being sold at about half price by some one of the major supermarkets on release day so it has happened, and they were advertising it like mad the day before.

Top 6? That's quite good - especially since that's DA:O's steam players only, whereas that's every player for Counterstirke, L4D2, and TF2.

Exactly. Steam probably has 5-10% of Dragon age PC sales. If even that. So top 6 is excellent, considering, as you said, you HAVE to play in Steam to play the Counterstrikes, L4D2 and TF2..

Not to mention people are far more likely to be playing in offline mode with Dragon Age then they are Left 4 Dead 2.

Our EA field sales consultant was pretty stoked that DA:O had gotten about 70 pre-orders in our store. To compare, Assasins Creed II got around 80 and COD MW2 about the same. As far as I could understand from what he told, sales were going pretty well for what is basically a niche game

MW2 was ugly. MW was far better IMO. It was a money grabber because the last COD did not do well i hear.

EA in a news release indicated that they have had over 5 million registered DA:O users. I will try to find the link but you guys probably can Bing that.

Aaaand I was right. What EA actually said was:

"With the release of Dragon Age™: Origins, the BioWare community has grown to a record 5 million registered users".

For all we know the "BioWare community" was already at 4.5 million registered users before DAO was released. I think DAO has probably sold pretty well but this press release tells us nothing at all.

What do they mean with BioWare community? If it's this site, then it may indicate even past 5+ millions sales..

Here is a link to MSN Money regarding the 5 million registered DA:O users (http://news.moneycen...124&id=10762901).

considering an EA executive publicly stated how happy he was that the DLC alone accounted for over $1 million in sales during the first week I think it ok to say the game was well received.

Thing is; being this big it attracted a lot of people who have no idea what the hell a rpg actually is.

The release refers to 5 million Bioware site users, not necessarily DA:O registrations. It mentions that the site's membership has grown by 500,000 since Oct. 13- I'd say that's a more accurate reflection of sales.

Did you see my post? That release doesn't say anything about 5 million registered DAO users, it says that the "BioWare Community" has 5 million people without defining the "BioWare Community". For all we know that means 5 million people have visited the social.bioware.com website.

If DAO had sold 5 million copies in 3 weeks it would have been an absolutely shocking event. I can't overstate enough how stunning that would have been. EA would be trumpeting it from the rooftops. There has never been a western RPG that sold anywhere near that figure. Even Diablo II, barely an RPG, didn't get there.

Really, 5 million sales for a Bioware RPG would be shocking.

Uh, what?  The last COD did ridiculous sales, just like they all did.  However the franchise is definetely a money-grabber.  Activision's even trying to find a way to do the same thing they did with the Guitar Hero games and put out more than one COD a year.

Where are you seeing the site's registered membership? All I can find is the number of characters that have been registered, which is over 500,000, but some users have multiple characters.
