I've seen this title for as low as $29. If retail wanted to entice people to come in, then they would have used the far more popular and overpriced (on the PC) COD title. You aren't going to use a niche segment to lure people into the store for bigger purchases. You need something with greater appeal.

it's not the individual retailers, or even the retail chains (like best buy), that put these products on sale at those prices.  those types of sales are "back-end funded" which means that the savings come from EA directly.  it has nothing to do with the particular title, or that a retailer is trying to push out a product (that usually doesn't happen until at least 3 or 4 months after a products launch) - it is EA trying to grab a large share of the Xmas market by putting ALL of their games on sale.

A lot of people here need to be more positive :D

I am sure DA sold extremely well.

Reasons being:

-huge forums demands overloading servers beyond the wildest expectations of Bioware
-over a million in revenue solely from console DLC shortly after release
-Return to Ostagar announced so quickly after release while the game and Warden's Keep are pretty much brand new
-The retail store I bought it at said it sold very well :D

Also, I thought that EA already pocketed a fixed amount regardless of the price retailer X sells a game at.

I thought it goes like this:

retailer buys from ---> Distributor buys from--> EA

So at this point the distributor and EA already got paid a fixed amount for copies, if a retailer sells the game for 35 dollars, the retailer makes less profit, but the profit remains the same for EA and the distributor.

I just dont know but somehow I do get the feeling that Dragon Age was kind of meant to be the lesser release and Mass Effect 2 being meant as the bigger release of the two.

ME2 will probably have more success, but EA wouldn't have invested so much in marketing DA it if it was meant to be the company's B game. They want and need it to succeed just as much as the other projects, even more so. The development and marketing costs of Dragon Age are staggering. no doubt. If it doesn't sell enough copies, Bioware will take a big hit, and there probably won't be a game as long from the company again (excluding the MMO). I remember a dev saying exactly this a while ago in a DLC thread.

well so far I am not really impressed with any DLC. I did not buy Warden's Keep and dont intend to buy return to Ostagar. Both appear to be rather poorly made and add little exept for some uber items that are just reskins and dont even give a new armor/weapon model.

That is not necessarily true.  First, this wasn't a global deal just a specific retailer.  This not even a big retailer in terms of game sales.  Second, this didn't encompass all EA titles.  Publishers can certainly cut prices to their retailers, offer co-op advertising spend, and price protections; however, this is not the case here unless you want to suggest that EA teamed up with one retailer to undercut all of its other customers....

Thats wacky logic, Alot of pc gamers are rpg fans, that why alot of us got pc's  because consoles lacked them and more adult deep oriented type gaming, I bought my first PC because OF  a game called Populas, First real "god" yes evently consele got waterered down versions. Consoles cannot compare in RPG's and the alot software the PC owners get vs. consolers.  And i'm a PS3 owner, all it is to me is a glorified Blu-ray player. Also Simulation software. Aviation,Submarines,Helicoptes,Tanks etc..

I bet PC sales beat x360 and PS3 combined, also factor in alot of ppl rent 360/ps3 instead of buy, You dont rent PC games you buy them.

i wouldn't suggest that.  my apologies.  my first statement came off as an absolute when it was meant to be a general comment.  it is possible that EA is offering all retailers that sell their product a rebate for any EA product sold.  while the major retailers have their deals cut, a rebate program would promote sales at the "mom & pop" independent retailers.  now that's not to say that the indy retailer couldn't sell it at a sale price - probably at a loss - depending on the manufacturers price control policies.  a great number of manufacturers control the retail prices that are charged for their products (ever wonder why ipods are the same price everywhere?)  i have no idea if EA does this.  all i know is that the gross margin on video games is a lot less than probably what most people think it is.

@hereticeyes - Maj Gant gives some good examples of how a manufacturer can help to defer costs to a retailer.  the rebate program also saves the retailer money at the expense of the manufacturer.

I think it is safe to say that DA:O is one of the best selling games this holiday season. Not only has it been on the top sellers list on steam consistently, but on pc.ign.com they had a poll asking what visitors will be playing the most of this holiday season and DA:O beat out MW2 by a good percentage. Granted, that site is visited by PC users and doesn't account for console users.

There are a ton of signs all over that show that has sold well. Add in the fact that DLC has allowed Bioware/EA to generate some more revenue and DA:O is a financial success for them.

But the fact that it is one of the most popular PC games this season means that it is undoubtably a hit and has sold well.

Note also MW2  has already annouced 3.4 million sales
But there audiance is alot broader. Who does'nt love to play soldier..
Anyway if DAO sells 2million plus id consider it a hit in the RPG big time.

Truer words have never been spoken. I have the DLC, but it feels like they add a startling revalation (sp?) in each dlc that kind of doesn't connect with the game lore to me. And then they give uber items just to get nubs to buy it.

I do think that putting uber items in DLC to get noob money cheapens the game but I think you're being a bit hard on Warden's Keep. If it had cost less money it would have been perfectly fine. The problem was that the whole game which can take 100 hours cost $50 and then a 1-2 hour add-on cost $7. So I'm going to pay 15% of the price tag for 1% of the play time?

To get me to bite on much more DLC they need to make the DLC longer and story-driven rather than uber item-driven, OR lower the price point. I just can't justify $7 for an hour of gameplay.

Yeah, starfang and warden's armor for $7!

The lack of gold in this game exacerbates the impact of DLC items. You can go to the end of the game and blood dragon armor could still be your strongest armor (provided you didn't kill that one dragon and specifically forge massive dragonbone armor).

Warden Commander's armor could be your 2nd or 3rd best all game...

Starfang is probably going to be your best 1-hander.

10% dodge of Lion's Paw boots is HUGE.

Bergen's Honor is the best helm in the game...period...

giving a warden the king;s armor cheapens this game beyond belief.

I personly think that the population of Ferelden would have every right to stone you to death for wearing it because you are not a king and have no right to steal this armor from the king. Its not some forgotten dusty old armor in a tomb or something you looted off a fallen bandit after all.

But hey, its a big massive suit of gold armor. 13 year old boys just love that.

No idea where you got that idea but from the industry side of the game you are totally wrong.  The console MArket is dominated by the WII and not any other platform.  The WII is a family oriented game system that is for older generation of people that never played video games or the very young generation just coming in.  The little portion left is eclipsed by the PC market and is not likely to ever overtake them.  You still cannot get everything you want from a console over a PC and upgrading a PC is vastly cheaper than updating your console.

PC still massacres platforms in RPGs-Actions. 4v1 at the least.

Here are the steam stats for some of the top games today... second number is peak players this day (it is nearly the end of the day, so that is fairly high). Note that this is steam, so it does not display the entire market, but these are the only numbers I can find.

Current Players Peak Today Game

32,681 102,968 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 - Multiplayer
21,911 35,483 Left 4 Dead 2
19,032 89,361 Counter-Strike: Source
15,057 72,317 Counter-Strike
10,512 16,436 Team Fortress 2
8,350 11,029 Dragon Age: Origins
Source: http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

Considering every game on that list is a shooter aside from Dragon Age, I'm not sure what to make of it. Dragon Age is getting beaten out by 6+ year old Counter-Strike and 5 year old CS:S, so that can't be something to brag of, different genre or not.

That's a lot more impressive than you make it out to be. Consider that only a fraction of the Dragon Age buyers bought it on steam, and a fraction of that fraction may be logged in. Where as Left 4 Dead2, CSS, CS and TF2 are kind of on a 100% need to be on steam to utilize the multiplayer... Really I am impressed.

More surprising is that there aren't at least 4.4Billion people peaked for MW2...

Never a more accurate rebutle.

Dragon Age: Origins has been watched by every PC gamer that knows what a D20 is (And trust me, there is a lot of us), Also, the PC required to run DA:O at max is so remarkably forgiving, I am honestly surprised anyone plays it on a Console. Not that the console versions aren't good in their own right, but seriously. If you got a PC made in the last 5 years, and maybe a Graphics Card that would MSRP for 100 bucks or so right now, You'd be able to run it maxed out with nary a hiccup.

I don't even play it anymore so I don't care. I was promised a spiritual successor to BG2 but what I got was a "dark heroic" (aka generic) story with boring combat. So I certainly wont lose any sleep if it ends up tanking.

Compare the sales on consoles to the sales on PC of any multi-platform release...

I assume the vastly superior sales on PC is why Bioware started focusing on the consoles as well...

They're made pretty well... But Honestly I probably wouldn't buy them individually. If one day a Pack comes out with a collection, I'd say gobble it up. There is more gameplay reason than just the items. A big draw is additional Experience points, It may sound stupid, but because there is a finite amount of conflicts in Dragon Age, every little bit helps. Of all the DLC so far, I'd say Stone Prisoner is the worst. It just seems so tacked on, Shale Himself is very good, funny enough and doesn't seem out of place. But as the DLC itself if concerned, the quest is pretty badly constructed, and the cherry on top is the cringe worthy VA.

Warden's keep, as the quest itself is actually pretty good. I enjoy it, and I've gone through it 3 or 4 times, maybe 5, I forget, as I've started a new game thanks to accidental talent point misplacement.

What I think in the future, is I hope Bioware is working on a full-blown expansion to Dragon Age. The type of game just demands it. You can't really capture the glory of what Dragon Age is about in bite sized chunks. I'm sorry if they have to feel they can, but as a dedicated gamer, I can say the structure of Dragon Age does not lend itself to tiny morsels. With a large expansion, you can do great story content at the level of quality we expect, of course with the DLC, you can churn out interesting combat experiences, so there is room for both. I would suggest releasing (taking an assumption that a full Expansion occurs, it may not) an Expansion alone, for whatever the MSRP of their effort would value, and also releasing an Expansion with a bundle of the DLC for some reasonable price more. I personally think it's more palatable to sell it that way, at least for some consumers.
