Decent bonus power for vanguard

So after being a religious soldier player for most of my mass effect career, I tried out vanguard just to change things up a bit.  Loving the class so far, but I just can't decide on what a good bonus power should be.  My first thought was that vanguards aren't so good at taking shields down, so I went with energy drain.  However, I soon learned that effects like warp and dark channel can be applied through shields anyway, hence why I always take Liara and Javik with me on missions, then I just follow up with a charge and watch the sparks fly.

For this reason, energy drain isn't seeing much use, as it only activates my cooldown and means I have to wait longer to charge, so my question to you the community is, what bonus power do you use on your vanguard?

If the cooldown is a problem, choose an ammo power or Inferno Grenade

After I got Javik's bonus power I consistently used that, as a vanguard, and kept my team to Garrus/Liara. With a fully-upgraded sniper rifle, it worked wonders on Brutes and Banshees. And witht that combinatoin, I pretty much had the full package to deal with any enemy.

Inferno grenade in ME3 is a thing? See I would take an ammo power, but the bonus ammo powers I find to be a bit lackluster. I mean, warp ammo is a decent all-rounder but it does less damage to health and armour than incendiary does, which I already have. Same story for armour-piercing.

I took Barrier for my no-Nova Vanguard. I still had Charge at 3s thanks to cooldown bonuses from armor.

AP ammo is pretty damn good too. Slam is hilarious. Dark Channel is great as well.

I like Dark Channel or Reave for a Vanguard.

I like Barrier, although don't use it until you can fully upgrade it. The cooldowns aren't too bad if you spec right, and it can increase Nova damage, which isn't on a cooldown.

Yeah I've experimented with reave, I like it better than dark channel as it has a shorter cooldown and still applies a DoT, and pretty much all my armour buffs weapon damage, don't have the wraith yet so I'm using the AT-12 Raider which works pretty well for me, makes very short work of anything that doesn't get blown up in a biotic explosion.

energy drain to strip barriers and shields. i run with EDI (chain overload and incinerate) and Garrus (grenade, AP ammo and maxed rifle dmg). vanguard is already strong against armor, and with energy drain + overload you will just melt barriers. this build has no weakness really. worked for my insanity run

Used several. In the end, I figured the Vanguard has no use for a bonus power. He's perfect as he is. Any other power just slows your down your CD, or is less effective than the stuff you already have.

With my infiltrator, I'm not even using the powers I already have. Like the time it takes to use incinerate would be more productive, when used for just firing another sniper shot. So it always comes down to this for me: "I could use incinerate now, or a grenade.... or I just keep on shooting with my sniper and do more damage than both of the others combined"

I had Reave in ME2, so I just went with that again. Works well for those situations where you do have to take an enemy down from a distance. Didn't use it much in ME3, though.

I played an insanity playthrough with a lightweight shotgun and actually used fortification as my bonus power. The damage reduction meant they never got through my shields before charge was ready to go again and the extra 20% bonus to powers, made charge/nova very powerful.

I'd suggest you stick with Energy Drain. As long as you play smart and upgrade it to restore 100% shields, it's like a ranged Biotic Charge. Bring along an accurate smg or pistol to accompany the shotgun and you've got a character that can handle anything solo on Insanity.

Energy drain? or Reave? hmmm

What does vanguard have more trouble with? shields or armour..(both deal with barriers) I am still trying to figure it out. Just done the Mars mission.

Are the cooldowns the same?

I am going with reave to set up a biotic explosion...just have to wait for Kaiden to wake up!

Reave then charge...(boom) causing a mini nova without having to nova? Reave can also replace pull or shockwave. Too many powers to map

can i do pull and detonate with reave

Or reave and detonate with shockwave

would be nice to be a able to be able to cause biotic explosions from distance. For those rare occasions i don't want to charge-nova shoot-charge like a mad man
