Cheap sentiment aside, retreat is a foolish and short-sighted move. That dreadnought was a lost cause the instant the Geth decided to hand the keys over to the Reapers. Better to destroy it now while you can than let it come back online and start tearing into your only allies in the system once more.
The issue isn't that Han Gerrell ordered his ships to fire on the dreadnought. Its that he didn't give Shepard, Tali, and whomever else was tagging along, a reasonable amount of time to try and get off the ship before ordering his ships to fire. And he very nearly killed them. It was a betrayal of the unwritten code of military conduct, that you don't leave your own behind. The mission of course takes priority over the men and there might have been a point where Gerrel would have had to order his ships to fire on the dreadnought before Shepard and company could evactuate, but Gerrel didn't even give them a chance or a warning.
When combined with the fact that Han Gerrel is a poor strategist whose blunder was the cause for Shepard having to board the dreadnought in the first place, he earned that punch.

Yeah, I decked him.
It's not a matter of whether or not it was the appropriate strategy.
It was a matter of him not bothering to mention that he intended to blow the ship up immediately before I went over there.
Well said.
That is the other issue with Han Gerrel's order to fire. If the dreadnought raid was a suicide mission where the Quarian fleet was going to fire as soon as Shepard disabled the upgrades, that should have been discussed beforehand. Gerrel should have informed Shepard of his intentions before the raid was underway.

Never.
