Note that I will not be taking into account QUALITY of said romances available to each sexual preference, for that delves into rather subjective material. Instead I'll look into the actual choices offered in Mass Effect 3 by sexual preference. The "types" of romantic options you receive in Mass Effect 3 are broken into 3 categories: the Sexual Preference options, Exclusive-to-ME2 options, and the Alien Romances.

I am not taking into account Bisexual preference, simply because I think it's rather obvious that they're given the absolute most options.

ROMANTIC OPTIONS IN ME3:

Kaidan Alenko
Ashley Williams
Liara T'soni
Garrus Vakarian
Tali'Zorah
Miranda Lawson
Jack
Samantha Traynor
Steve Cortez
Diana Allers

***Jacob Taylor & Thane Krios not considered "options" due to extenuating circumstances.

STRAIGHT MALE:

TOTAL OPTIONS: 6
-Ashley Williams
-Liara T'soni
-Miranda Lawson
-Jack
-Tali'Zorah
-Diana Allers

TOTAL EXCLUSIVE OPTIONS: 4
-Ashley Williams
-Miranda lawson
-Jack
-Tali'Zorah

TOTAL EXLUSIVE ME2 OPTIONS:
3
-Miranda Lawson
-Jack
-Tali'Zorah

TOTAL ALIEN OPTIONS: 2
-Liara T'soni
-Tali'Zorah

STRAIGHT FEMALE:

TOTAL OPTIONS: 2
-Kaidan Alenko
-Garrus Vakarian

TOTAL EXCLUSIVE OPTIONS: 1
-Garrus Vakarian

TOTAL EXCLUSIVE ME2 OPTIONS: 1
-Garrus Vakarian

TOTAL ALIEN OPTIONS: 1
-Garrus Vakarian

GAY MALE:

TOTAL OPTIONS: 2
-Kaidan Alenko
-Steve Cortez

TOTAL EXCLUSIVE OPTIONS: 1
-Steve Cortez

TOTAL EXLUSIVE ME2 OPTIONS: 0

TOTAL ALIEN OPTIONS: 0

GAY FEMALE:

TOTAL OPTIONS: 3
-Liara T'soni
-Samantha Traynor
-Diana Allers

TOTAL EXCLUSIVE OPTIONS: 1
-Samantha Traynor

TOTAL EXCLUSIVE ME2 OPTIONS: 0

TOTAL ALIEN OPTIONS: 1
-Liara T'soni

FINAL COMPILATIONS AND RANKINGS:

HIGHEST TOTAL OPTIONS: Straight Male (6)
2. Gay Female (3)
3. Straight Female (2)
3. Gay Male (2)

HIGHEST TOTAL EXCLUSIVE OPTIONS: Straight Male (4)
2. Straight Female (1)
2. Gay Male (1)
2. Gay Female (1)

HIGHEST TOTAL EXLUSIVE ME2 OPTIONS: Straight Male (3)

2. Straight Female (1)
3. Gay Male (0)
3. Gay Female (0)

HIGHEST TOTAL ALIEN OPTIONS: Straight Male (2)
2. Straight Female (1)
2. Gay Female (1)
3. Gay Male (0)

Anyone sense a pattern here??

ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS:

*Straight Males clearly are the target market for EA/Bioware in Mass Effect 3. Even Gay Females have more options than Straight Females!
*The amount of Female Options (7) to Male Options (3) is astounding. EA/Bioware provided exactly 1 male option for each preference: Garrus (Straight), Kaidan (Bi), Steve (Gay)
*The biggest discrepancy seems to be the Total Exclusive Options. While the other preferences only get 1 each, Straight Males gets 4, with every Mass Effect 2 romance transferring over and even receiving an exclusive alien!
*Gay Male is the only preference to not have an Alien option. If the controversial issue was simply creating a gay male option in the first place, why the avoidance of male alien homosexuality?

*On that note, no new alien options were added in Mass Effect 3......why?

Pattern: BW believes the series is played by a mostly straight male fandom that goes after female characters. That's why fem!Shep got far less male options (only Garrus and Kaidan are available in the end - Thane dies and Jacob moves on) while can have multiple lesbian romances (Liara, Diana, Samantha). Male gay players get Cortez and Kaidan but only Kaidan is shown semi-nude.

In short: straight male players get far more content than straight female players - in form of female LI for both genders.

You left Kelly Chambers off! She gets you the achievement and everything.

This was a very interesting read, thank you for compiling this. I try not to take a side on the "who got more options thing" so I wasn't going to comment... until the last sentence. And you're right, no new alien romances were introduced! It might seem like such a strange subject, but if I'm going to play a game that takes place in space I'm going to romance a damn alien. I can romance humans in real life, it's boring in fantasy land.

My thesis is that, while Mass Effect 3 certainly ADDRESSED other sexual preferences through romances, the amount of options they gave within each preference indicates that Straight Male romances were still hugely favored, and lessening the discrepancy by adding more options to the other preferences may go a long way.

Really? I did not run into Chambers during my playthrough (bug?), so I don't have the data available to confirm this.

Still, if true, it widens the discrepancy.

Right? The absense of a new alien romance might speak more to EA/Bioware's thoughts on Mass Effect 3 as a whole rather than the romances themselves.

True but there were several things that could've kept him alive, at least a bit longer. The Hanar were working a cure and he could've get a lung transplant. But no, Bioware wanted to kill him off.

Correct. Not saying that Thane should've been kept alive, but it would have been a methodology for re-balancing the obvious focus on the Male Straight sexual preference.

Another methodology could have included another new male/alien romance option. Any other ideas out there?

Frankly I am grateful for the actually choice between 2 gay male options, I don't mind there not being an alien or 8 exclusive options. I found it fine and was happy with it. (Though I may have been happy with just Kaidan though especially since I;ve only managed to be able to do one play though, still nice we have a choice and I wouldn't invalidate Steve for any reason, he's included and a gay male end of.)
But I do feel for Striaght FemShep, though I disagree Thane and Jacob should have ended another way (in fact it's kind of nice how they have 2 differing story arcs to everyone else including the potential to cheat themselves) but even with Kaidan that's the only really option so not much of a choice.

I don't really mind. Nor do I hope people thought there would be an equal in gay relationships to straight ones. I think it's perfectly fine to be honest. I would be slightly odd if suddenly half you crew is bi, and everyone just wants a piece of you.

Thought some more options for straight femshep wouldn't hurt. I was suprised you couldn't get serious with Vega, after all the forth and back teasing z.z

Agreed. I'm not saying we should be greedy and ask for equal choices for every preference, but at least acknowledging more choices/ choice types per preference would be nice. The discrepancy between Straight Male romances and all the others is too wide.

Yeah as if Kaidan died in Virmire and Garrus wasn't romanced in ME2. Straight female Shep gets absolutely nothing.

WHICH IS INSANE!

How do you plan on attracting straight female gamers to the series for the first time if there's a possibility they may not get a straight romance?

Bioware made a troll face when they said they would try to appeal to the female more in ME3. What they meant was that they would try to appeal to lesbians and straight horny males more.

Hanar Cure: He tells you it would not bear fruit in his lifetime. You'd think he'd know.
Transplant: He refused it.

Just be glad you're not with Jacob and move on.

Here's a weird and crazy idea - don't kill Kaidan if you're a straight female!

Gosh, I had no idea killing off prospective love interests might leave me with no love interests! Stop the presses!

For the record though, I think Vega should have been a femshep option, regs be damned.
