Yes, I know, there've been many threads on the net about this. Still not conclusive for me.

I have the Locust SMG. It's doing fine for burst fire when I need it, although it lacks the gravitas of a proper assault rifle. Still, wouldn't going for AR be somewhat redundant? On the plus side, adding a weapon proficiency instead of an upgraded weapon, means you get one more (and generally useful) weapon type to burn ammo before needing more clips. (Curiously, during this run as a vanguard I'm finding myself much less in need of clips than during my previous run as a soldier, and this is even before I actually dabbled with any biotics. Still, I suspect AR could be a good meat and potatoes weapon that the vanguard class lacks (shotgun is close quarters oomph but it's not really a basic weapon).

I thought about Sniper Rifle. I missed it as a vanguard, I had loved it as a soldier and had a great time with it. Except people say SR isn't really useful without time slowdown (yes, Adrenaline Rush is an awesome power, I generally like soldier more than vanguard), which I can't really assess because it's been a long time since my previous run (and my old saves are incompatible). I'd be using SR for heavies, big slow mechs, taking out snipers or spaced out opponents that use cover etc. But it's not like I really need to line up and give that sniper shot if I could also efficiently use an AR over distance. This is probably more of a matter of preference and style, DPS being the same, you just seem more efficient if you don't spread bullets around.

Now Claymore shotgun isn't bad and it fits with the idea of the class but it somehow puts me off. Not even the one bullet thing, more like the overall "evil" feel (huge pipe with radio hazard stickers all over it). Hard to say. There is certainly a lot of appeal in charging up a scion and one-shotting it, even if this looks like Redneck Rampage. I also prefer skills over items, and as I said before, picking a new weapon skill would bring about the benefit of having more ammo to go through before needing new clips. And both AR and SR could fulfil a tactical role (AR: good at all distances, basic meat and potatoes weapon, not bad for charging; SR: good weapon for long and very long distances, more efficient that sending bursts) beyond what upgrading the shotgun could do.

Thoughts, guys?

Dudes, just to let you know, I didn't really feel like hanging on etc. so I made the choice and reloaded a couple of times. Sure sniper rifle is nice to have especially when taking on the geth and the claymore shotgun isn't really that bad with the 1 bullet reloads but I had the best time with the assault rifle, it seems it was just what I need to be able to pack more general punch. Can't really line up for a sniper shot when there are many guys shooting at me, nor is the charge & 1-shotting practical when you don't plan ahead and/or don't have easily accessible, undefended cover to jump behind after charging. Assault rifle seems to be a good basic weapon, even though the Locust is mighty powerful as it is. Oh well, having two burst firing weapons isn't bad. Soldier > vanguard anyway. Wish I'd started as a soldier in ME1, I liked that version of vanguard so much better.

That's because it's not conclusive, period. There's no best choice, all are viable, just go with whatever you prefer.

Still, I suspect AR could be a good meat and potatoes weapon that the
vanguard class lacks (shotgun is close quarters oomph but it's not

Close quarters oomph is what vanguard is about. You can charge, like, 95% of the enemies in the game, and shotgun is hands down the best weapon for charging. So yes, shotgun is a vanguard's "basic" weapon. Ammo is hardly a problem either, I find Claymore one of the most ammo-efficient weapons in the game.

You can play some sort of adept-vanguard, charging less and focusing on things like Pull or Shockwave, I guess shotguns may lose some efficiency in that case, but that's not the typical vanguard playstyle.
