well if i recall it right, its for the encounter later on when the darkspawn attacks. like the mage spell greasy stuff:D

Actually, the barrels of oil are used for the undead attack on the village. You can tell Ser Perth about them and he will send men to collect it, then they light it to do some extra flame damage once the corpses come running through.
