Hey, and sorry if this was posted before, but either I fail at searching or I am to tired to search correctly :o.

Anyways, like the topic says: How much dex should a tank have? I'm playing a mage/healer myself ... but I have one in my group and I am considering playing a tank after this playthrough.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks

26 will let you get all of the shield mastery skills if you go sword and board. It's where i left my tank at.

Better question is what min STR you should have for a shield tank. ;)

:) thanks!

I asked because after getting the min dex for all the shield talents I found him to be missing his regular melee swings 95+% of the time (mostly on "boss" level monsters -- big red hp bar). So I put a couple more in dex in an attempt to get him to stop missing. I cannot remember the number exactly, but I do believe he isn't missing anymore ...

In regards to the min STR, I remember reading that 42 (besides being the answer to the life the univer ... uh ...=D) was the min to aim for.

Now, for each level up I was going to put 1 point into STR and 2 into cunning (I think was the last one).

Cunning is a bad idea for a tank.

min strength is 38 for tier 6 massive armor. 42 is better so you can wear tier 7. any more than that doesn't get you anything except more weapon damage. tanks don't need very high damage so strength past 42 is optional.

min dex is 26 which you'll need for shield mastery. dex past 26 is probably a decent idea anyway because it adds to your attack rating and your defense rating, both of which are important stats for a tank. defense rating in particular is the single most important tanking stat in the game (for mitigating melee/ranged damage anyway). excess dex is pretty reasonable.

for my tanks i go to 42 strength and and 26 dex ASAP. once those minimums are met my remaining points get divided between dex and willpower. i like the extra stamina i get from willpower so i can use more shield attack techniques. they do good damage and have some very nice disabling effects through knockdowns and stuns.

Sorry it was constitution I was thinking about not cunning :).

I think I am going to leave my current dex since I seem to be hitting more often than not, and concentrate on a little bit more in willpower to get his stamina up but not forgetting constitution ... maybe alternating 2 str + 1 const then 1 str 2 const etc.

With Shale, I go all Str and Con, no dex.

There are other tanks in the game?

I stuck my tanks with 37 base strength, 22 con, 20 willpower, and everything else in dexterity. Never found the tier 7 armor to be worth it on Normal mode :P

Nah, 26 STR, rest in DEX.

Best equips for a dodge tank does not require more than that, and spending 12 or 16 points in STR for armor mitigation you won't be using anyway isn't worth it when you can have 12-16 more points in defense. Not only that, but doing it this way means that your tank starts dodging hits better much earlier in his career. To the point that my Alistair can easily tank a High Dragon at lvl 11 and only worry about auto-hits (mainly grabs).

The only thing you can't equip naked would be champion's shield, but that's easily taken care of by +STR items.

And with you wearing light armor, you really don't need willpower considering you don't have much (if any) fatigue in the first place.

Ya, I'm noticing a difference between the light armor and the heavy armor. Something cool about the heavy armor though. In a King Arthur kind of way. Guess it depends on what kind of character type your going for. Two distinctly different styles.   In the end best to do what you feel is fun.  That's the point, at least for me.Image IPB

I started a sword/shield warrior for the heck of it on nightmare, and haven't spent a point on Constitution yet. I hit 35 str, and am currently pumping Dex. The Lothering wolves were a joke. Stood right in the middle of all of them, and maybe chugged one potion. I'm now firmly in the Dex-tank camp.

I think the worst part is that a lvl 18 DEX tank using dagger has ~38 dps. Compare to a CON tank using starfang does ~34. Even if you maximized STR for a shield tank it still only does ~43.

All this while the DEX tank has superior survivability.

Well, at least the daggers are grossly oversized :)

For warrior tanks my rules is

42 Str/ Max Dex for Massive Armor Shield tank

26 Dex/ Max Str for "Offensive" Shield tank

36 Str/ 20 Will/ Max Dex for Two Hander Tank

2:1 Con and Str for Dog/Shale Mage killer Tank.
