On my bf's elven mage character, there is the capital letter "i" situated on the left of the top spell where the quick spell selector is. Does anyone know what that is?

I noticed this too on my elven warrior. It looked like the Roman numeral for 2 but I don't know why it was there. To clarify, its right next to the Y quick spell button on the quick spell bar.

it's the roman numeral 1. pull on the trigger and notice it changes to a II, right? meaning...two.
so the I is for the first "page" of quick spells, and the II is for the secondary one (the one you have to pull n the trigger to use).

Don't feel bad. I had the exact same question when I first started. I, too, thought it was a Capital Letter I and couldn't, for the life of me, figure out what it signified.
For the record, you'll only get the Roman Numeral I if the character has 2 sets of weapons equipped. If only one set is equipped, you won't get the I. That's part of the reason I was so confused -- not all my characters had an I and sometimes, no one had one.
Anyway, keep in mind, when you have 2 sets of weapons equipped, you get 2 sets of quick-spells, one for each set. So when you have your melee weapons out, make sure to map a set of melee-specific skills (Roman 1). Likewise, when you switch to your bow, map a set of archery quick-skills (Roman 2). Hope that makes sense. If you don't specifically map out your skills, I believe the game will default to the first set. Nothing worse in the heat of battle than doing a quick switch to your sword and shield and realizing your quick-skill set still offers Melee Archer and Rapid Shot.
As an additional side note, in case you didn't figure it out yet, even if you never actually use a character's second weapon(s), equipping weapons on the second side frees up inventory slots. If you're hurting for inventory space, store a few weapons, arrows or bolts there.

Thank you very much! I tried searching online and also perused the manual with the game and found no such guidance on the mystery numeral symbol! I am sure your advice will prove highly useful
May the Maker gaze upon you fondly
