I could swear we're supposed to play video games for the gameplay.

Well... that brings up the issue of what exactly we're talking about when we say 'gameplay'. In the era of Pac-Man, Defender, Donkey Kong, etc... what gameplay was was pretty clear. Yet text-based games also had 'gameplay' but of a very different nature. That was blurred even more in 1984 when the original "King's Quest" game came out. Gameplay isn't (or doesn't have to be) just the 'shooty-bits' in an RPG, although in FPS that's still a primary aspect.

I don't think anyone can confuse story with gameplay.

His point is that "story" is part of gameplay.

Think about when you play D&D and similar P&P rpgs. The "gameplay" isn't simply the fighting. How you engage NPCs is also part of the gameplay. If said NPC has information you need, how you decide to get this information is part of the gameplay - but isn't the actual information part of the story? Don't you see how the line gets blurred in RPGs?

But really, a game without gameplay is just a movie. And usually a bad movie.

Thanks for clarifying pkmn, I send you a virtual cookie. Enjoy! :P

If you play video games for the story, I'd suggest you go visit your local library. Video game stories don't hold up against real literature.

How about no.

Both are equal, and in an RPG they merge.

They are both important. Story doesnt matter if you're gameplay is ****. Gameplay doesnt matter if you're story is horrible. A good game balances these mechanics. It entertains the player with good gameplay, getting them to stay glued to the screen. Then, while they are enjoying the gameplay, it pitches a good story at you. Thats Mass Effect, thats BioWare.

I have a meaningful reason for this poll, so I'm, once again, shamelessly bumping it up. Thanks for all comments so far.

Story but I prefer having both as best they can be.

Why not both. It's pretty rare to have a game that doesn't have any redeeming values in both story and gameplay.

FFXIII: awful awful narrative but interesting lore, great gameplay, bad level design
Mass Effect 1: fantastic story, super clunky shooting segments and inventory, nice RPG mechanics
Witcher 2, Dragon Age, Halo series (shut up, I like them): awesome gameplay and story

I enjoyed all these tremendously. The only time I can think of where one aspect was so bad that I didn't want to put up with it was Devil May Cry 3. The gameplay was amazing, but the characters and story were so damn annoying I gave up on it.

This poll is too simplified. People's tastes are more nuanced than that.

This game showed me that story is at times more important. Even though the gameplay in ME3 is awesome, the ending destroys the story and makes the game feel hollow.

It depends on the game. Gameplay is always important no matter what the game is or what genre it is but 'Story' driven games like rpgs 'need' a strong storyline.

The person who voted for gameplay needs to set his/her priorities better.

I am going to go bash my head against my wall now.
REALLY?
why are we playing games/
Oh for the story?
ok well we have books and movies and TV and.
F that if story was all that matters than why is anyone a gamer at all?

Who really needs to get their priorities better in a video game?  Somehow finding gameplay more important is the stupid thing around here.

I think this poll is worded wrongly. It should be "which is more important in a game?" if you take away story, all you got is a Facebook game. Take away gameplay, you got a movie.

You know, there's a term for something with story and no gameplay - a movie. They generally cost 1/5 the price of a game.

If I am spending $NZ120+ on some entertainment then I want story and gameplay. If I can't have both, I'll go for gameplay. I can get story from a $20 movie or book.

Generally, I wanted to see if people bought ME3 mainly for the plot/story or gaming experience. Will love to see more players/future players participate.

Well, its gameplay for me, I enjoy rpgs and anything complex.
But since ME is a petty corridor shooter beyond redemption, I play it for the plot.

The story and the choices i get to make.

Sure, its fun to fire the weapons sometimes. But its not why i fell in love with the game. Its just a way to get transported to the next level of the story.
