I didn't love ME1 because of the gameplay, I can say that much.

I think most of us can say that.

I still cringe at the thought of replaying ME1 again, even though I know I will, one day.

In ME story. Glad I can say that I could bear ME2 only for the story, but in ME3 it's quite acceptable though I still pick Gears for real shooting action

story first for games like these then gameplay.

some games dont need a story like team fortress 2 and other games of that nature

I can excuse a lot in gameplay if the story is great, but can't excuse a poor story if the gameplay is great.

So I guess for me it's the story that matters more of the two. Though that doesn't mean that gameplay isn't important too.

It seems so far that most people bought ME3 because of THE STORY. Makes you think, doesn't it.

Yeah, too bad they effed it up with quite a few plot holes, and ignoring bits from the previous two games' story.

I vote for both story and gameplay.

ME3 was subpar for both imho.

Both are important, but story is more important than gameplay in a RPG.

Story for me, because of it I forgive some faults in gameplay.

agreed here too

So how many of you think that maybe BioWare would have spent their development budget better by concentrating on storytelling more than polishing/changing the gameplay. I mean, the gameplay was already quite refined in ME2. And the MP? Well, I can understand the appeal as an addition to the game, but who among us actually bought ME3 thinking : 'Oh, I gotta play that game's Multiplayer.'?

-I think they should have spent more time on the story and the dialogue. Dont get me wrong. There were certain parts I liked, hell I loved the banter between group members... but I sorely missed being able to initiate conversations like I did in Me1 and 2. The Zaeed type dialogue made me feel detatched from the story and the characters. Also I think the writers could have spent a little more time playing "devils advocate" toward eachother... being critical to the point of nitpicking.

I would have been quite happy with ME2 graphics and gameplay, and then a really fleshed out story and dialogues. The MP bit.... I dont like MP alot. I react too slowly and I havent really played MP since Battlefield "Vietnam". I undestand teh businessmove and all... But I dont agree with it. Bioware stretched so far it lost quite a few fans in the process.

I didn't force myself through multiple playthroughs of ME 1 on two different systems for the ****ing gameplay.

Story, ME1 had iffy gameplay but the story saves it. But if a game doesn't have a gripping or strong story and focuses on gameplay I can't play it.

I concur.
But I think Zaeed/Kasumi style dialogues makes sense when they have no new topics to discuss, sort of warning that "there is nothing to see here".
Yet I still think they should add more deep dialogues and discussions among crew, since they reduced crew numbers for "deeper emotional development". Pfeh.

I don't like ME2 projectiles velocity (50 m/s, are you kidding me?) and execution of thermal clips idea, plus I totally hate those cramped narrow levels, even if they mimics outside (Jacob's loyalty mission). Since game rated M, for 17 y.o. people one can think that those people knows how to find way even on open terrain without being pressed into intestines-alike levels and not to get lost.
Other than that, I'd be happy with ME1 graphics and gameplay. Graphic is secondary (I played Fallout 1 last evening), unless developer poses it as one of selling point or make it worse than in previous game.

It's like military - platoon can cover front up to 400 metres. But will be stretched thin, should you spread them on wider territory.

And, regarding OP question, I think both matters and somewhat tied together. If there is interesting story with flawed gameplay (I don't mean ME1, I like it), I can ignore it. If story has some flaws, as well as gameplay, but they together still delivers, I can ignore flaws. But if story is bleak and uneven, gameplay is not polished, it's hard to let it slide.

Isn't this really a start of the old RPG vs Shooter conversation again?

No doubt the focus on casual players and button mashers won the debate with ME3 being what it is, though in the end, gameplay and story hasn't fused well yet in my book. I'm not convinced these Choice driven series even work yet because we don't really have a working on, we have stand alone games that have been re-done each time to satisfy new commers and those who wanted more explosions than dialouge.

The story was this franchise's selling point and as such, it should be the primary focus. I have enjoyed the tweaks to game play and I like the combat system in Mass Effect 3 but this is a saga, not Battlefield or Call of Duty.

It may interest you to compare the results of this poll with the one I posted over a year ago on this very subject.  social.bioware.com/877716/polls/12092/  Mine's more nuanced anyway.

As long as the gameplay isn't absolutely unplayable, then story easily for me.  It's why I always ramp down the combat difficulty to its lowest setting for my first couple of play throughs, so that I can play through the story without having to get frustrated by being stuck against certain tough enemies in combat.
