Story, by far.

Pretty much the only thing that stimulates me nowadays when it comes to gaming.

Story.

But gameplay helps a lot.

Mass Effect's gameplay is intertwined with the story. This poll is more appropriate for a Final Fantasy game, where the story and gameplay are on opposite sides of a wrought iron fence, patrolled by raptor-mounted security.

If we look at the numbers, we can see clearly where the emphasis should have been placed.

I really liked the combat, but some things should've been improved.

I'd like to hotkey my allies' abilities, so I don't need to enter the menu all the time.

"No Liara, I do not want you to cast singularity on the geth Prime. No, I do not want you to try to stasis it either. That doesn't work. I want you to cast WARP, so I can detonate it and make pwetty biotic 'SPLOSIONS!"

Silly squid girl... :o

Story. I loved the gameplay, but I just can´t go back to playing SP after watching the ending.

Have you seen the youtube vid from my sig? That is my way of dealing with the ending. I always play the same Char, so I just Alt-Tab the ending from a certain point and watch the vid instead.

I thus try to erase the Catalyst scene from mind entirely.

I can excuse a lot in gameplay if the story is great, but can't excuse a poor story if the gameplay is great.

So I guess for me it's the story that matters more of the two. Though that doesn't mean that gameplay isn't important too.

I think I will second this.  Both are important but I've been able to play games with poor gameplay because I liked the story (American Mcgee's Alice) .  On the the flip side I've abandoned games that had good gameplay mechanics but didn't have motivating plot and characters. (Far Cry 2)

I play KoA for gameplay and it’s great, love the combat.

If game play is not good i don’t play the game unless the story is very special.

Both. A game could have the BEST story EVAH but could be easily ruined by bad gameplay.

the perfect mixture is it, what makes Mass Effect so brilliant. Both must be at 100%.

Story. Game play is only important as far as it is needed to interact with the story. Game play will be copied and surpassed. It will be noted in the future for its contribution to future game play. Story is remembered forever. Story is the part of experience that makes a game unique. I run tabletop rpgs. Sometimes I change system midway through the game. Gurps, D20, Savage Worlds, and a few others. The story continued through each change and is what my players remember. The same can be said for video games. As said in Dorkness Rising "Story trumps rules."

Without doubt the story is more important to me than the gameplay, in a game like Mass Effect.

Its a rule that applies to the majority of - but not all of - my gaming interests. I mean, if a game is going to ask me to murderise 100 guys for example, it needs to tell me why its important, what will be the consequences if I don't do it, why do I and/or my character care personally, and so on. Otherwise, I'll probably find the gameplay dull even if its technically well done.

I think its easier for me to enjoy a game that has NO story whatsoever (for example, Audiosurf), than a game that has a bad story.

If you want a good third person shooter, play Gears of War.
If you want to give a damn, play Mass Effect.

This is probably the best post I've seen here in a while.

I hardly care about gameplay at all. I will suffer and trudge through tedious, annoying, boring gameplay for awesome story and characters. My cousin convinced me to play Dark Souls and I hadn't known anything about it. After playing it for a few hours I was like "when do I get to a town or meet a character? When does the story start?" and then when I realized there was no real story or characters I stopped playing.

Story is MORE important than gameplay, but gameplay is a bit important. I liked ME1, but ME2 wins due to gameplay. ME3's gameplay felt unfamiliar and the story for the big name worlds except for Rannoch and Tuchanka were lacking, but it was by no means a bad game, I enjoyed it.

This is a total falacy. In a game like Mass Effect, they have to be equal. The game tells the story through gameplay, why would gameplay ever be lower on the priority list? They might as well have made a movie if the story was so much more important. Gameplay isn't just combat, it's also exploration and most importantly dialogue. The core way you interact with the game is through the dialogue wheel. Hell, Mass Effect 3 had the worst story of the three with the most inconsistencies and people still gave it accolades because it played so well until the very end.
