They're all writers' pets. That's why they exist.
But yes, Liara clearly ranks higher in the ME pecking order than any other squad member. So what? She's more interesting, counterintuitively more human, and a necessary counterweight to the militarism of most other squad mates. I can understand why people who don't like the character are frustrated because the writers would clearly prefer we take part in the Shepard and Liara story, but I think she's awesome and fits perfectly. Let writers have a pet. They do well with them.

My problem is that a lot of her cut scenes made her feel like a LI even when i didn't choose her. The time capsule scene for example, works better if you have romanced her. And the farewell at the base, i would have preferred a simple hug rather than a meld. It feels like cheating, but would be too impolite to turn it down.
