Is it possible to lay down traps on the map before beginning the battle? If so, it would make it much easier for me to bottle-neck and cut down the enemy's numbers.

Ah, if you search the town you learn of a trap you can place, it will always hit the enemy, but you only place it with the knights, gotta talk to them.

Princess Bride, English teacher in junior high had us watch that in class, Sister watched the movie too.

Loved that little guy and how he always said it.

Weird, my English teacher made me watch it in middle school as well.  I wonder if that's common.

Difficulty: Easy mode
Troop Status: MAXIMUM MORALE, max armor, max benefits

I did everything I possibily could to boost the morale of all the troops. I got every npc to help fight.   I have 3 in coersion too.

By the time I get down to that fight there is always 1 person at 1%-10% life who just drops dead at my arrival.  No matter what you cannot save everyone unless you have morrigan healing which is absurd anyways.  You have to have a healer which is very absurd to force upon someone who plays RPGs.   I've played tons of rpgs where my party didn't have to rely on a mage or a healer.

I understand making something difficult, challenging, hard. But impossible is where I draw the line.

This is exactly what happened to me a few times...

The only way to really do it properly I have found is..
1)Make sure like you, everyone is maximum morale/traps/equipment.

2)Start it on easy, as soon as the cutscene with the mustard gas lookalike is over, quick save the game.

3)Rush past where the barrels are set on fire with your main group: here you can cut off any undead reaching the knights and fellows: When this part is over you will automatically be teleported close to the messenger despite being miles off

4)Make sure your mage(s) (wynne or PC) have heal and the force field spell: force field has a super range on it, thus saving the fools with 10% health till you get there. Once you do thanks to easymode you can cone of cold your way to victory on tight spots while spamming heal/regen/life ward on neardeath militimen. Usually if you have bartendar lloyd convinced, hes the fool with 4 skeletons bashing the fluff out of him when you first get there

5)If there are simply faaar too many in too much trouble: use your quick save. The arrangement of the militiamen in the second part are ONLY randomized when the messenger comes to tell you about the ninja ambush from the lake. If you save AFTER this part you will get the same dismal outcome. So Keep randomizing! You'll get it :)

Side Note: And no you can not rush past the militimen barricades to cut off spawns as you can with the knight part. The undead dumpsterdive for the NPC regardless :(

I replayed the battle several times over. To me , the undead were comming in endless waves for at least 10 minutes no end. And each undead even though it was white was strong as yellow. I know because combo of freeze+earth fist , would not shatter them. Perhaps its a bug. Because the whole sequence was insanely hard. (at lvl 11)

But there was simply no way to save militia. No possibility whatsoever.

Best i manage to do is to have 1 militia man saved :(

Yea it's very difficult. It requires 1-2 healers if you are playing on normal mode.

But having healers in your group doesn't mean you're skillful. It just means you had healers. Kind of dubm in my opinion. As someone who loves tactics in game I would much rather preferred to have control over them so I could puull them back when they are hurt.

Its not my party dieing. They have no problem.

But village militia is getting one shotted by undead. And when over 100 undead attack. In endless waves. You can not keep aggro away from militia.

AKA - you have limited pool of stamina.

No way enough for 10 minutes endless wave of undead fight

Have 1 or 2 tanks with taunt and at least 1 healer and your set.

Battle of Redcliffe

If everyone survives the night battle of redcliffe then you are awarded a special gift. I won't tell you what it is but you do get it. Now here is the problem:

If everyone survives and i mean EVERYONE you get the gift/reward.

If one person dies, even 1 militiamen you don't get the gift/reward.

Bann Teagen considers one person dieing "HEAVY LOSSES".  If you let all the militia die including murdock, lloyd, berwick, dwynn, ser perth & his knights it's still no different than losing 1 militiamen.  If you lose 1 person in the battle of redcliffe it's considered heavy losses and you don't get the special reward.

This needs to be fixed, it is 99% impossible to save all the militiamen without 1-2 healers in the group.  I don't even like using mages or healing so it's impossible for me to achieve this reward even if I'm skillful in the game.

Bottom line

Allow us to get the special gift/reward from bann teagan as long as most of the militia survives.  Just because 1 militia person dies doesn't mean I can't get a reward for the hard work in that scenario.  The best I've done with my group and the given situation is that everyone survives except 2 miltiamen.  I should still the ****g reward! :P

Ok nerd rage over.

Then you're not good enough, and you need to get better.  I kept everyone alive on Nightmare, with a party consisting of myself (Dalish Elf warrior-archer), Sten, Leliana, and Alistair.  It took a number of reloads, and sometimes someone would get killed and there was absolutely nothing I could do to stop it, but such situations occur.

Really now? this is such a minor spoiler if you could even call it a spoiler.

Who would have ever thought that you would get a reward for no one diying?

Ok heres an update after reading this thread I decided to reload my save file and attempt to keep the village alive. I succeeded and heres how I did it:

1) Firstly, set the mode to easy/casual. This will make it much easier to kill the undead.

2) My party consisted of Shale, PC Warr S&S, Wynne, and Alistair

3) At the top of the hill near the windmill when the event starts, rush your team past the blockade and barrels and begin your fight there, make sure you pickup any stragglers that make it past you. Use your Warr/Alistair/Shale and constantly spam taunts/bellow. This part is easily done without losing anybody. The NPC villagers even stayed at the mill and watched as my party and I wiped out all the waves.

4) When you finish at the mill and start the next part of the event, make sure you run further in towards the defenders and rescue that idiot Lloyd. On my save he is off fighting two undead by himself and almost always dies if I don't reach him quickly enough. Place Shale in a good spot and turn on Stone Aura. From here on it is the same deal with Alistair and your PC Warr, just spam taunt on every cooldown and use Wynne to throw down the occasional Glyph of Warding/Paralyze and Earthquake at chokepoints where the undead are coming from.

The reward for actually saving every villager isn't that impressive. If you are truly curious feel free to PM me and I will link you the item since I cannot say in this forum (no spoilers).

Since you brought up RPG I've become really curious on this point. What exactly is your roleplaying motivation for not having a healer along that you think justifies letting people die for? How are you so outraged that "I'm sorry I didn't save your husband and son, but I didn't want to bring a healer because X" fell on deaf ears? Whatever X was the fact remains that you could have saved these people but chose not to, and yet you expect them to reward you? If I were to have to GM that situation I'd honestly be a bit stuck for a response, but it's unlikely that it would be the NPCs aquiescing.

No one is forcing you to do anything.  If you don't like the game, dont play it.

The only reason it's impossible is because you're too stubborn to admit some things can't be done in certain ways.  Gee, sounds like real life.

Hm.. yeah.. using a healer here helps a lot, I've played this part on hard a couple of times and gotten the helm with no problems as long as Wynne's in the party. Without a healer to hit any of the militia men with low health, no losses is really hard.. you can't really pause the game and order them to quaff a potion :S

I would agree with the sentiment that DA:O is really dependent on mages. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I find that I use Wynne and Morrigan all the time.. kinda makes it hard to use other characters.

You get a special reward for keeping everyone alive. Live with it. Maybe they should give a second place award for keeping most of the people alive. It could be given you by a sobbing child. We can call it the, "I wish you were better so my daddy woulda lived" medal.

That's an excellent idea!

I did this on the first try on Normal difficulty, with my Sword-n-board PC, Morrigan, Alistair (wielding 2-hander), and Leliana. Nary a healer to be seen. But it was also the first place I went, so if the undead scale to your level, that might have helped. Either way, it's far from impossible to do without a single healer, much less two.

Didn't even have everything completely maxed out, either (Couldn't get the amulets for the Knights).
