I read this in another forum:

"Auto-health-regeneration, auto-mana-regeneration, and auto-resurrection would be understandable if they were optional (and off by default), and even then only available on "Very Easy".

The fact that they can't be toggled off and are present on all difficulty levels conveys another message."

I havent noticed this yet, but is it true that even when your comrades have gone down they get up after some time?

This sounda totaly retarded...

If this is true i hope the first mod for this game removes this or makes it optinoal.

Characters who have been 'killed' in combat come to once combat is over, however they come back with a permanent injury that will reduce their effectiveness until you use an injury kit on them.

(btw, for future reference, they don't like plain bumps on this board)

It does seem to be the case that mana-regen, life-regen and team member revival are all automatic. The idea, from what I've gathered, is that this is meant to make the game more enjoyable and less frustrating. How much did you enjoy having to replay really tough battles in BG because Aerie/Jaheira/Viconia got disintegrated? I sure didn't.

Plus, you can bet that long dungeons (etc) are going to be challenging enough with these settings, taking them off would just make those areas unplayable. Or at least, not at all enjoyable.

And yeah, bumping after 20 minutes isn't necessary. Why not take a decaf coffee break, watch TV, play another game, maybe even try and find the answer to your question by reading through other posts, or doing literally anything else for a half hour. It may be surprising, but there isn't always someone willing to drop everything to answer your question right away.

Auto-resurrect has been in every Bioware game since NWN. Not sure how this surprises you now.

Health regen was introduced in Mass Effect, so it is still not a new concept for BioWare games.

The way reviewers make combat sound though, it is a good thing. This is because many fights will take all of your parties resources (health/mana/stam) because it is so well planned out. If it did not exist, you would have to rest after every battle, which would get very tedious and boring.

Health and stamina/mana regen, from what I'm aware, is only really apparant outside of battle.

Team members will only get back up after the fight is over -- no reviving during combat, and once they do get up, they've got a pretty nasty debuff on them.

The argument for this goes that it eliminates on the annoying downtime and inventory clutter created by trying to make sure that you've got enough revival kits/spells ready in case anything bad happens and you're not taking a knee and resting after each fight (NWN, I'm looking at you...).

I actually like the way they're doing this. It's not like an FPS where if you hide for a few moments you're back to full health and mana, and you won't see anyone that's been dropped in combat getting back up to keep fighting until your teammates are actually able to help them. It allows you to get back into the action and keep the momentum of the game going instead of having boring downtime.

from what i understand non of these features work when there are bad dudes around....also it would seem from watching the warden's quest live footage that it doesn't help you that much

During combat, auto-revive doesn't happen, it's only after combat, from what I've seen health doesn't regenerate during combat either, unless you have the proper equipment and/or skills.

And while it may look odd, I can understand the reasoning behind it, in most RPG's after combat it's healing or resting time, and you either have enough resources to make it through a dungeon or you don't, but unless you're locked in until you're completely through it all, all that means is that if you come ill-prepared you'll have to slog back to a town at some point and stock up on stuff. In most cases this is nothing but a timesink that is more annoying than useful, and while it's not uncommon, it really just boils down to pointless backtracking. It doesn't really increase the difficulty, just the time until you're ready for the next fight. Remember that it's not an action-RPG or FPS where you have no choice but to push forward, and being forced to leave the place just to come right back to it after a few loading screens doesn't really increase the difficulty.

I can only see this as a problem if you want to do a run without any healing at all.

Considering every review of the game comments on the non-trivial difficulty, I don't think auto-rez is as big a deal as you think it is.

Unless they make the game easier... it is necessary. Seriosuly, you can't go into battles with half health on all your guys. You WILL die.

Some people like their perma-deaths a la Baldur's Gate and less forgiving injury, HP, and mana/spell mechanics. To be honest, most modern games have moved beyond those kinds of combat mechanics, and with good reason--for a lot of people, it gets FREAKING ANNOYING after a while. Besides, I'm sure there will be sufficiently awful things on higher difficulties to make it challenging.

As noted, if your party members fall in battle, they get up after the battle is over (not before) and may suffer a lingering injury (or multiple injuries). If you use an injury kit it will cure one injury - and only one per kit, so if you have multiple injuries, you'll need to use multiple kits to cure them. As well, your mana, health, and stamina regenerate when the battle is completed. While this may sound less than what you'd prefer, I think you'll find the difficulty of the game warrants this approach. I didn't find it was bad at all when I was playing.

I like the idea, but allowing it to be toggled off wouldn't be a bad addition either. Still, I can't imagine many people wouldn't load after losing a party member if it was permanent or even temple raised. How many of you went back to town in BG/IWD when one of your party members got offed? I for one didn't.

I agree with the system in that is makes the game more enjoyable but also offers up a negative to "dying". Though with the system I will say the game is likely easier but you have to balance the scales. On one hand you load constantly if one or more party members dies (which in games like nwn2 was pretty much every fight), on the other you can effectively get through by the hair on your teeth if only one man survives the fight.

Having to rest for all of 30 seconds, so your priest can "memorize" Raise Dead, and then raise your party member #1 - repeat for #2 and #3 is tedious. IMHO It adds nothing to the game other than just waste time.

But I can understand how some would value "realism" over "fantasy" and find it more enjoyable.

I know that there are lots of the "hardcore" (aka: "srs bsns" or "elitist") players out there who will claim differently, but I can't say I ever found permadeath and forced-healing to be an enjoyable part of playing BG2. Every major fight was the same thing: Save before, fight, then rest/heal/rest until back to full strength. If anyone died during the fight, you either resurrected them during rest/heal/rest or loaded from the save and tried again.

I've never personally met anyone who actually accepted the permadeath and continued on. Never. I've never even personally met anyone who thought that it was fun and immersive when a character got disintegrated. And I can't imagine how boring my life would be for me to find rest/heal/rest to be an engrossing and fulfilling game experience.

Isn't that the point of computers? Instead of making me do the boring things that always get done anyway, just have the computer do it for me and leave the fun part (the prep and the battle) to me. Or even better yet: devise a system that hides all of that from me so I can focus on having fun and enjoying the role playing/story line.

Thanks Bioware for getting rid of some of the things I found most tedious about BG2.

I wonder how long it'll take before we've got games where you start with immortality, to deal with all that frustrating and annoying losing of the game.

We already did, 8 or so years ago. It was called Planescape Torment and it's pretty awesome if you haven't played it.

It's entirely possible I'm splitting hairs here, but I have this weird notion there's a difference between

1) minimizing redundant repetitive clicky time-sink chores

and

2) removing all challenge from the actual gameplay.

Call me crazy.

Sorry, perma death is no fun and it will not be added to the game. Now back to your friends at the codex.

I quite like this system..I don't have to continuously waste all my money on healing salves..especially early in the game....I can manage them and my tactics to complete each battle..and know I will be healed... I quite like it.

True, but whoever posted that doesn't have the full story.

That mod is the last thing you want, unless you want perma-dead party members, and to go through hordes of potions after every fight.

I'm all for mana regen...us mages are as useless without mana as achievement points on xbox live.

As for the others, in Bioware I trust.

Maybe people should play the game first before complaining about how easy it is? Just a thought.
