A ship would be a great for fast travel from port city to port city, country to country.
A ship would be really cool, we've not spent any time on one in any of the DA a games and it would be a different spin on the whole campsite thing.
It would keep us on the coast cities and such, but it would be kinda cool.
I would hope there isn't the overused punchline of your ship being stolen, though.

I actually kinda like the idea that the ship gets destroyed at some point mid-game as you're sailing towards your next destination. For example, everyone's asleep below deck and you're awoken by a loud explosion, you go to investigate and discover that you're under attack. You and your companions have to try to escape asap (perhaps it's a timed event or something.)As you make your way to the rowing boats saving crew members as you go you'll have to fight a bunch of bad guys that have stowed away onboard or had been double agents/whatever. Finally you and your companions escape *Que cinematic cutscene of your ship blowing up/sinking in the distance as you row to safety.* From there you'd have to take on a new home base (perhaps something similar to Vigils Keep that you wculd upgrade in preparation for the onslaught of whatever it is we will be fighting in DA3.)

The campfire type of setting in DA:O worked for that game, but I'd rather see something different.
In Awakening, we had Vigil's Keep, but instead of the Companons being strewn around Vigil's Keep, they were located in the throne room. I'd kind of prefered if they were a LITTLE more spread out, not as far spread out as the companions were Dragon Age 2 ...
The ship would be interesting, but the trouble of it being able to get you to all the places you have to go ... it is slightly limited

So, the genral consensus seems to be, "yes, we want some type of specialized, and perhaps upgradable, home base type setup" ...

That's why it could blow up at a certain point in the game when a ship would no longer be a viable option for travel, then you'd have to use other means of travel, like horse 'n' cart, on foot etc.

Plus have you ever played Assassins Creed? Owning property sucks. Skyrims property feels rather pointless besides setting up tropheys and trophey wives.

Land ownership only makes sense in specific context. Take DA:O, it wouldn't make sense for a Grey Warden, being hounded by Loghain and Howe while trying to quell a blight, would stop to buy a farmstead. In Awakening, you were given a keep, but it belonged to the Wardens as a whole, more of a military base, which made sense.
The ten year span of DA2 lent itself more to the idea of buying and building property, and buying the Amell estate made perfect sense to the character and the story. Perhaps a way to decorate inside could have been welcome.
This feature would really need to be dependent on the story arc, and the main character's background in DA3.
Agree.
Also, I enjoy Skyrim and have 3 houses in different towns and I like sitting in front of the fire and putting my stuff on tables, but Skyrim doesn't have the characters and story that DA does, though they may get there someday.
If BioWare were able to do this without taking away from the story, characters, I would enjoy it, but I'm much more interested in the characters and story. I liked the camp in DA:O but I also liked the tavern in DA:2. And for me, I'm not interested in a strategy game so I'm quite happy with quest and small battles not running a war.

Some are spot on with the idea here some are lost it seems. The idea here is not to have the game built around this idea, but be part of the game. The past expansion was really the catalist to this idea as it has never really been done correctly. For me at least, if you did this part right and made it part of the story and yet you could still work with it after all is said and done (IE Co-op mp etc) you could really make a game vastly unique and fun!
The idea of owning a keep might have been taken the wrong way (miss-understood) while being a lord would be badass fun
Say in DA3 part of the conflict has to deal with a town and in this town you make choices in how to help, this teir choices in say how to defend or raising funds to hire troops changes the outcome. People talk about in other threads about choices having meaning, well this is a direct choice having direct physical meaning that you will see, hear and feel as it unfolds.
For me at least, the idea of holding a keep is my "Big Wish" and doing all I described. But you can also take this concept and go with the other ideas that are here, It doesn't have to be so big, you can as described before , end up defending a town on your way and making choices there in and seeing the results is really what I would love to see.
In this we get replayabilty and more. For me at least, I see it as a way to keep the replay and game going and going for a long time. Implement my main idea on the first page and that can be just an expansion or part of the main that will replay forever. Games that involve friends in a co-op way of dealing with things is the wave of the future!
ps. I am making a version of this concept in Skyrim (it will be solo of course) but you will be a lord of a keep and upgrade , defend , hire, build and adventure for your lands and your holdings. Myself and a few friends are in on this, it will take probably a year to finish but I love this idea so much I figured, put my time where my mouth is
