In which case, you forget the entire point we've made time and time again that the line was glitched. Only meant to appear around the keepers.
You're in ****ing space. You're surrounded by walking tanks (elcor), jellyfish (hanar), and bowling balls (volus). If I were an NCO that just got off a lifetime of groundside duty, I'd be pretty damn confused as well. Oh, and sorry if my vocabulary isn't pc enough for my squadmates, but as an NCO I'm not given to putting things diplomatically.

^ well spoken, Nightwing.
Ash is the ordinary soldier and I assume she also has the man-of-the-street opinion regarding aliens: most humans never left Earth and most likely never talked to an alien before! Keep in mind any embassies are placed on the Citadel, I doubt every single alien species has embassies on Earth too. And even if they have - do you know many HUMAN ambassadors on a first name basis today? I don't. So the situation is still the same: most humans have never seen an alien before the Reaper Invasion.
I don't think Ash is a racist - she simply doesn't trust anyone easily. Not even her own kind (as you can see in ME1, ME2 and ME3). Also she never judged species at any given point: neither Krogans, Geth nor Quarians. Well ... Salarians had no issues with neutering an entire species, the Quarians want to destroy every single Geth in a war they (the Quarians) started ... THAT is racism.
I'm glad all of those issues can be solved at some point 'though the Salarian leaders can not be convinced.
Well, and Ash? No racist comments in ME3. She can be hateful - towards Shepard, if s/he doesn't care for Ash and kill her.

Romanced Ashley only, never romanced anyone else.

I personally think that if Ashley had been a bloke and made all the same comments in ME1, people wouldn't have had as much of an issue. They'd just think "Oh, he's the nationalistic career soldier type, I can go with that"
But because a lots of us have pre-conceptions about women and ethics/morality, it probably jarred with personal sensibilities and appeared more extreme than it actually was.
I'm not trying to tell anyone what their opinion or sensibilities are, but I do believe this will be the case for some.

Maybe, MrStoob, maybe. People still do have issues with strong, straight forward women.
I admire those women IRL =)

I've romanced, cheated on, and stayed faithful, to every love interest. It's a game So I've done almost every romance path there is to do, still have to do some of the ME3 only romances.

I would have liked to have done this, but I just can't get over Sheploo.

Since I kind of screwed up in my first play through of 3 with my Male Shep and let Tali die, I plan on sending my Male shep back through the trilogy to fix that and to romance Ash from the begining instead of Miranda among other things.

The first time I played ME1 (back in 2010), I knew Ash was the girl for me and my Shepard. Hell, she had many qualities that I admire in and look for in women, so it was easy for me to choose who to romance.
I was really disappointed that she only got a cameo in ME2. Though Miranda was really tempting, I kept faithful and couldn't wait for the epic reunion in ME3.
And I simply was not happy with what Bioware did to her. I was both satisfied and extremely disappointed. But for me, Ash will always be worth it and I can't see romancing anybody else.
I could write a wall of text but I'll stop here.

I admit, I bought ME2 and romanced Miranda first, but I just never really... clicked with her as a romance option for Shepard at all. I was shallow and it was mainly because she was hot and was wearing a revealing catsuit. Shepard and Miranda's relationship never clicked with me. To me, it was nothing special. And I didn't understand Tali and Shepard's relationship either. If he loved her, why is risking her health? I kinda got Jack's a bit better, though.
I first talked to Ash on Horizon, where she chewed me out lol - I was crurious. I wanted to know more about her, and why Shepard had upset her nearly to the point of tears. So I went out and bought ME1 and never looked back. She was awesomely realistic, and I could relate - my Shepard could relate. Despite being in the military, they had this amazing build up, and talked a little about everything. Ashley and my Shepard have both been soldiers since the age of 18, went to the same boot-camp, and our sole-survivors. They just clicked.
Can I be considered an Original Ashleymancer? Probably not. But she's my canon love interest from my John Shepard for many reasons.
