Look at this cliche Hollywood ending, is that what you want for Mass Effect?

Wait you mean to say you could assemble a team of the most unlikely allies, some of whom completely hate each other, bring them through a relay which no one has ever gone through before, destroy a Collector Base and a Reaper Larva on foot and get everyone out alive?

Sounds ridiculous. Make sure to write in a space baby. No way the largest fleet every assembled in the history of the galaxy can kill the Reapers on Earth. No gritty scene where you have to sacrifice half the fleet to save your planet or the let the planet fall to save the galaxy. Bring in the space magic.

Look, no matter what Bioware does, the ending will never be "happily ever after". Even if Shepard lives, and spends the rest of his days with his chosen love interest, he will never forget the war he fought, and the people he lost.
His sacrifices should be sadness enough.

The point is about having the option. If you don't like it don't play for it. If someone else wants it, they play for it.

I will be very mad now if we get a DLC ending that does not have at the very least one rainbow...its just to easy...

With this as the ending credits theme.

That ending is just terrible. Where's the last minute switch from dark yet optimistic sci-fi RPG to properly grimdark galaxy non-interactive art? My god, you'd almost think you'd spent hours playing the game to get such an upbeat ending! There's no sense of futility, and a very real desire to play the game again! That has no place in the Mass Effect universe.

/sarcasm

Not sure if my previous post is showing or not at the time my connection to the site failed..

lets just say i wasnt happy i missunderstood the op post and did not notice the sarcasm right
away

i thought oh no not another we dont need a happy ending post..
because i believe in choice and thats not what we got..

i dont expect shepard to come out and everyone standing there singing songs
but i dont think he has to die either , some people say that he actually NEEDS to die
and i think to myself , why ? did i miss something is this a rule ?
i think in the me universe its not a must at all.

there should be endings that matter , that have choice and most of all that makes sence
and do not erase everythign you did before it.

apology to the op for not understanding right away , its late.. :innocent:

I mean really, it has an outright victory. It has triumphant music. It has the hero rising from the ashes in a completely cliche manner.
This is not what Mass Effect is about, Mass Effect is dark and grim. Happy endings have no place in this very dark and utterly not inspiring universe.

www.youtube.com/watch

And now you can see why Mass Effect cannot have happy endings ever.

I think you missed the point. We had no ending, not happy ending, not really sad, just WTF!? (Lots of Speculation from everyone)

Couldn't agree more, It should be an option despite what the naysayers think imo.

I loled, well done OP.

I hate people who feel a story needs to be dark and gritty with a sad ending in order to be good.

The would still be a ****load happier than the current ending and it's still pretty damn dark. It would actually still be pretty dark if there was a genuine unicorn for some reason. Image IPB

If the writers are too worried about not making a cliche "happy" ending, they end up making it far to nonsensical and depressing for the fan base to accept, which in my opinion, is far worse.

"RARARGHH TEH ENDING NOT GRIMDARK ENOUGH I WANT MORE DARKNESS!"
"GRARGH TEH ENDING NOT FEED MY NECK BEARD RARGH!"

This is just silly.
I dont want to play a game so it can beat me over the head with how "gritty" or "realistic" it is.
I want to play the hero who beats the snot out of the baddies and goes home.

Real life is angsty enough with my games smacking me in the face with that fact. If you want grim dark fine. Just dont expect everyone else to want to muck about in the filth some types seem to need a constant supply of just to exist.

That's not true at all. ME was only started getting really grim in ME3.

This is besides the point. We don't need a "cliche hollywood ending". We need an ending that is coherent, and one that is not filled with plot holes.

Posted this elsewhere, but to the people barking about cliche

I havent seen one person that wants a 100% happy ending

And tbh, "dark" endings are the new cliche.

Everyone wants a dark ending with deep meaning. I cant remember the last truly happy ending I have seen. Even WoW's Wotlk had a dark ending. Game of Thrones, The Ghost King (last Drizzt series I read), Dragonlance, Pans Labyrinth, Harry Potter...It's the new "fad." The problem with ME3s is that it leaves a little too much up for question. The ending had great elements bioware could have played up to make it a phenomenal ending.

The thing I remember most about ME1, was the big smile plastered on my face at the end. Second thing was the new game+ option (which was the first game I played that had that) and the smile got exponentially bigger with play-through.

I thought the opening of ME2 would was really well executed to be fair.

It was a contrivance to explain why Shepard was no longer level 60 and force them to work with Cerberus, even if they were the ones who put thresher maw poison in his squadmate's veins.

Literal much? I want an ending that causes my breath to catch in my throat and my spine to shiver, and I want to feel that rush of emotion as I watch good triumph. I want the same catharsis at the end of 3 that I felt at the end of 1.

No, not really literally, but in terms of tone.  Given the overwhelming power defined in ME1 of a single Reaper, and then the 'army' shown to be coming in ME2.  They are left with having to maintain a balance of contrived plot device to save the day [Crucible/Catalyst] and grimdark [the ramifications of the overwhelming odds].
