What exactly did you people want from the ending? Shoot something in its special spot then press X to win? Did you want to see Shep gank and then tea bag a fleet of reapers? This game was all about story. The whole series was about story. The first game played like a movie. The second game went off the rails a bit with the cerberus/collector crap, but everything else in it was damn near perfect. ME3 took everything that came before and did an amazing job of tying it all together into a climax whose realism (relative to the setting) maintained the tone that had been set through it all. And by 'all' I mean all three games. I'm sure it left some stuff out but I can't think of any now after 42 hours without a single moment that felt like a grind. It is easily one of my favorite games of all time. Its weaving of combat and story was almost seamless and it corrected just about every game play mistake it had made over the past two games. If it doesn't win game of the year I'll be shocked. Its a ground-breaking success for the industry and for Bioware.

A journalist doesn't need to be a shill to love this game, they just need to love good games.

It makes absolutely no sense and leads to the destruction of most of the galaxy.  There's no epilogue (unheard of by Bioware), and leaves you at a 'buy more DLC' screen.  Among 100 other things.  Plenty of other threads on the subject.

...so you wanted Shep to gank a fleet of reapers? Made no sense? This is a spoiler free zone so I guess we can't discuss specifics, but it really didn't make any less sense than the Mass Effect, the existence of the Reapers, or the galactic cycles. It really just sounds like it isn't the answer you wanted, which really really really misses the point. It flowed. It was Shepard's story, and looking at it from there it really doesn't matter if it ended with St. Peter and Pearly Gates so long as it made sense for Shepard. The ending flowed with the rest of the story and was focused on Shep the whole way through.

Things like an epilogue are for times when there is more to say. I'm not convinced there was more to say.  The whole game was an epilogue.

Fallout 3 had equal if not a bigger hoopla about the ending than ME3 did. The only reason ME3's ending made the news is because some idiot is trying to sue EA by way of the FTC, not because the reporters actually cared about the ending.

And no, the biggest disaster in the history of gaming would be the Atari game E.T. which has been blamed as the sole reason behind Atari's console implosion that literally took the entire video game industry down with it.

So unless ME3 suddenly single-handedly wipes out the sales of PC's, Mac's, Xbox's, PS3's and iOS (infiltrator), then I think it's safe to say this isn't the worst disaster in gaming history. Just the most recent gaffe in the ever increasingly shorter attention span of today's gamers.

Not worst game, but biggest fiasco/missed opportunity. Oh yes.

EDIT:  Unless Diablo3 turns out to be a game about dancing penguins or something.

'Year' being the key-word in the title.  I'd be impressed if anything gets this level of flak, and D3 will probably get goty.  But I guess we'll see eh.

Its a horrible ending because of some minor plot holes, not enough cgi, you can't say no, and because bioware promised they wouldn't do it this way. That's the argument?

Plot holes: Can't talk specifics here, but I didn't really care because they were just putting emphasis on your final choice. Yes, plot holes are annoying and maybe it could've been better executed, but really that misses the point again.

CGI: Everyone always likes more cgi. What they gave us wasn't the best, but it certainly wasn't bad and it most definitely was not so bad it deserves all this.

Saying no: It would've been nice, sure. Again, I disagree that the option's non-existence totally obliterated the entire game/series.

Bioware promised: Looks like they did. Turns out they weren't able to make good on that. I guess I never looked at what they were or weren't promising so I wasn't as upset by the result. But I get the whole expectations thing.

Bioware/EA still have time to fix it, but they need to answer to the fans they need to communicate, if they fix the ending,ME will share place with epic sagas like kotor,Baldurs Gate, Diablo, etc, if they dont nothing ME will share place with dungeon siege, Mafia, the godfather, and other rpgs who just killed the franchise with his last game.

stop right there, ME3's ending wasn't perfect, but are you seriously going to say that this game was overall worse than DAII?

Difference is that DAII was so bad that it was good from start to finish. So the fact that DAII was **** made it a really great source of entertainment because there was just so much to laugh at, so much to make fun of. In the case of ME3 it's nothing but bad writing due to plot holes and inconsistencies, and those are never entertaining. What's worse is that ME was actually pretty decent efore reaching the end.

P.S: for the love of god people, the destruction of the relays didn't destroy the galaxy. Whether or not you think it's an inconsistency I'll let you decide, but we see with our VERY OWN EYES that Earth was one of the closest planetes to the relays. Surely if the relays were so destructive we'd see Earth burt to a crisp, but instead we see some marines cheering in victory.

It wasn't a disaster, and it was far from perfect. The lip syncing was horrid compared to the previous two games, the dialog options were horrible, and there was decided delay between when characters would respond to each other, again neither was present in the first two games. Also the musical score during big battles is totally absent. When you first stumble upon the geth and quarians....thats pretty epic cutscene....and no music at all to enhance the mood, just sound effects which is kinda lame.

Lets not forget the fact that the dialog choices given, were basically the same regardless of what choice you chose.

There was a video on Bioware's website that showed the scene on thesia where you are talking to an asari commando and she's screaming to get the gun ship ready. You have two options: tell her to abandon the post and retreat or to help you. Typically, if you tell her to abandon the outpost, they leave and you have to fight your way through the hard way...if you ask for help you get it but there are consequences. Sadly......neither of these matters because in both choices, they help you out and you still get the same consequences.

These sorts of ridiculous fakeout choices were predominantly the ONLY types available.

In ME1 you could choose to leave a squad member behind if you didn't want to recruit them or if you roughed someone up or were nice to them, the results of that mattered later on within the same game. In ME3 there was this illusion of choice, but it just wasnt like it was in the first two.

So while I don't think this is a disaster of a game, nor the worst game, it's utterly far from perfect.

The game lacks polish in lots of areas.

the only disaster is the so called fans who are pushing for this company to go under

i swear i think i can officially say that mass effect fans are the worst

it kills me to say that but now i have to defend myself because of people who do crazy things because they didnt get what they want

I didn't like the romances either they were toned way down to the point they should have just kept the dialogue and skiped the sex scene all together it was PG rated at best. This is a Mature rated game if your not going to make it that way then don't advertise it as something it's not. The swearing was also toned way down i'm 40 years old i want to play mature rated games not games for kiddies.

Since when is the ESRB rating an advertisement?

I also enjoy playing mature games. The difference is my definition of mature doesn't mean explicite sex scenes and swearing.

It depresses me how such an amazing game can be completely discredited by its fans all because of one 5 minute period.

It actually depends on how bad the situation gets. How much of an uproar the 'vocal minority' brings up.

DAII was just disappointing all around, ME3 was pretty damn great until the last 10 minutes.

What's worse? A bad game with a bad ending, or a great game with a bad ending?

Good game with a bad ending, just like Deus Ex: HR.
It gives a sour taste in your mouth.

-Yes. Because DA2 was so crap I didnt feel like playing it for more than an hour. ME3 was bearable and a decent game on its how untill an ending ruined the entire franchise. DA2 didnt manage that. I dont think many games have. Its no mean feat.

Yes- ME3 will get game disaster of the year. Bioware has been in steady decline in cunsumer confidence in their products, starting with the early cancellation of DAO 2 year promised DLC, then continuing with the poor quality of DA2, and so on.
